portugal decriminalised it too, including heroin and cocaine. it has widespread political and popular support, over a decade on from implementing the policy, and portugal has some of the lowest rates of drug use in europe. no small thing considering it’s key location on drug shipping and supply routes.

Completely unrelated, utterly FWP formatting, I just noticed some of the punctuation in zeek's posts.

` (alt 96), and neutral ', or " I can at least get on my keyboard. If I want open/close “”, or ‘’ marks, Windows-use on this website I'd have to copy/paste them out of or compose with a word processor that does that. Which is fine until it does something I don't want.

´ (alt 0180) and ’ (alt 0146) need their extra zero or you get ┤ and Æ.

it's apple mac/OSX's keyboard. that or the text encoding used specifically in the safari browser (i.e. ISO latin 1 is different from Mac OS roman).

apple's solution for multilingual or multialphabet usage is genius, tbh. you just hold down the key in question on your keyboard and a hover-list of diacritics, e.g. acutes/graves/cedillas/etc, just pops up with a numerical shortcut. so a+1 = à, a+2 = á, a+3 = â, and so on. è, é, ê, ë, ē, ė, ę. no need for awkward websites with ALT-numpad codes or &HTML; lookups.

i'm familiar with the differences between left single quotes, double quotes, apostrophes, graves, primes, etc. ditto hyphens, en dashes, em dashes. these are some of the persnickety details of typesetting and proofreading.

To be perfectly frank I've never been fond of the method in Windows. C S B, Pushed hard for a Mac as a kid because that's what I was working on at school, but my dad had a Windows PC at work. Bonus, got to play Doom and Mechwarrior 2, but at what cost.

I hate alt codes, it never flows. Why in so many years with so many versions of Windows MS could not have improved this is beyond me.

i was pretty handy with alt+codes back in the day but i prefer to use 10keyless mechanical keyboards wherever possible (better 'posture' for gaming tbh, having your WASD and mouse closer together, rather than having your right-arm flung out on the edge of the desk because your keyboard is a yard wide). that means no numpad ... which means no alt codes.

i still pretty regularly have to cite the ALT code/HTML syntax/unicode reference if i'm trying to specify something to typesetters.

mac solution is way better.

Spacing between arrow keys and lefty mouse position doesn't feel too strenuous for me. I use the numpad a lot in games with a billion shortcuts. I don't like to use the numpad when I'm typing a document. Like it's way the heck over there, get that shit out of here.

In situations (net café LAN parties) where I haven't bothered to remap keys or relocate the mouse, gaming has felt a little awkward. I think South Park showed "the position" best:

for high-level FPS games you want maximal deskspace for mousepad. low-sensitivity, low DPI sensors, low lift-off distances ... and a very large cm/360.

hence making the keyboard as small and unobtrusive as possible. .

I started FPS gaming with a trackball mouse in the 90s on a very generic pad. I do alright with a small or moderate mousepad from an office store. A lot of the gamer this and gamer that stuff seemed to gain more traction later (did have a cancerous turbo controller for SNES though that was either banned or taken turns with for Street Fighter 2 sessions).

Now people write about what logo-plastered gaming mouse pad you should buy in whatever-year. UI is important and everything and I don't want to diminish people's individual experiences or playstyles. But I just never felt like I needed a giant mouse pad made of the finest unicorn hairs to feather in better shots. Nice, but size considerations aside I think sometimes that stuff is a bit of a placebo.

never heard anyone care so much about what brand your pad is from, although there are clear time-tested brands which make high-quality mats that work well with all sensor types.

it's all down to preference whether you opt for a hard-mat or a soft-mat surface. varies largely by player and of course the game you're playing.

low-DPI/low-sens, high cm/360 just makes so much sense in the era where games like CS:GO are the competitive norm. those games are mostly about positioning and commanding the right sightlines/angles/vantages. there isn't much twitch or snap aiming. so low sensitivities rule the roost when it comes to those tiny incremental 1-2cm adjustments to plink the heads off T's running around a corner. in almost every scenario where you're caught off guard and have to throw your mouse to the other side of your screen, you're basically dead anyway.

i always fell somewhere in the middle. being able to snap aim or quickly 180 your mouse is a must for rocket jumping or sniping in games like tf2/quake.

I've used both. Hard mats are easier to clean but will sometimes start to curl, especially the ones mounted on a hard surface (I have an Allsop in the process of doing this right now). Felt mats will start to peel from the corners after some years if brushed against too often, or can wear through on high traffic spots. Replace primary use mousepad every 4-8 years, not a big deal.

Don't have it in me to recommend a "luxury" mouse pad to someone shopping for a computer unless they're looking to make some sort of statement with it. Then it's just like "whatever, you know, but I don't need to see your big-breasted anime mousepad. No judgment, but how could you have visitors."

Got into a lot of games where a button for sensitivity adjustment became useful, moving in and out of snap shot mode, and sniping in a bush mode depending on how a match was playing out. Doing a 180 if caught off guard is worthwhile in a game where you have enough hit points to take a few shots before going down. One of the old mice I had used subdued (for a mouse) LEDs to indicate which sensitivity level you were at. Useful, although it was usually already somewhere in the back of my head.
