dilbert reminds me of those balding middle-aged dads who make a ruckus in the high-school football stands. wracked by anxieties of their fading masculinity and past vigours, living them out vicariously through the travails of the on-pitch quarterbacks. full of fantasies about gun ownership, 'saving' a mass shooting situation, 'showing them' what 'they're made of' (whoever 'they' are, normally minorities), and, of course, here encouraging young, able-bodied men with their lives ahead of them to go and fight in foreign follies. it's the manly thing to do! take it from a CAD nerd who lives at home.
