Now Battlefront 2 the female character death screams were kinda weird they were so high pitched and loud v the male ones.
I've read her character design was based on the voice actor. https://i1.wp.com/twinfinite.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/cere.jpg?resize=600%2C338&ssl=1

Also re: asymmetry, in character design, it's a way to make your characters look more "real." Crooked nose, offset jaw, whatever.

Don't know what to think of it honestly. Rylance was good, as always. The tech-guru stuff was the best part of the film.

The rest of it... the movie is a reference to climate change debates sure, but most of all one to american political culture I suppose.

A lot of climate change stuff sounds like alarmism. I definitely think climate change exists but people are making it out to be a bigger issue than it is. We should do more to adapt but hold off on some of the more onerous modifications.

"Global climate change" is very broad. Crisis-level threat to ecosystems, economies, freshwater supply, farming (big disaster brewing here in the states with water rights). Lots of interlinked problems snowballing into other problems.

All too much for 30 year old boomers like yourself to bother with.

macbeth: do you think migrants can possibly adapt and add anything to rich northern nations?
also macbeth: climate change isn't that big of a deal. it's overhyped.

woooo boy are the next 20-30 years going to be a rude awakening for you.

hundreds of millions of people are facing desertification, famine/drought, and depleted water supplies in the next decade. to say nothing of other communities who are facing rising sea levels and salination of their water/food supplies. this isn't 'future dystopia' stuff. the mass migrations of people is going to continue apace much quicker than you think.

voyage of time - 4/10.

i really like terrence malick and i'm prepared to be very patient and give him a long leash with his waxing philosophical. the guy has made some astonishing movies and i am prepared to sit and try to understand, on his terms, the work of a master-level director (with a PhD in heidegger, natch). i value him as a highly original artist with some quite interesting and profound things to say, expressed in a uniquely poetic style.

anyway. with that said. the above movie is a total rotter. i watched it whilst eating dinner and couldn't believe how bad it was. originally made for IMAX, and serves as a sort of 45-minute (previously feature length) extension of the B-roll cuts from the Tree of Life prologue section (that weird bit of the movie that went off on a giant CGI tangent about the origins of the universe, life on earth, the dinosaurs, etc). as preposterous as that segment was in the Tree of Life, it kind of oddly worked when set against the background of a family drama in suburban 1950s Texas.

the above movie has brad pitt narrating in seriously po-faced tones about the origins of the universe. one of the most epic and ambitious themes imaginable. he has brad pitt whispering over it. it's fucking godawful.

perhaps this movie worked in its intended setting of IMAX theatres. it is obviously a visual spectacle. but, wow, no movie should lose so much in the translation to a smaller screen. i watched it in a remastered 4k edition - which should be enough.

I feel that something like this could really work well as a sort of Koyaanisqatsi production. Stripped of dialog, carried purely by music and visuals.

Also, closeup of the human eye. Deviantart, circa 2005.

yeah those were good movies. made immeasurably better by philip glass's minimalist compositions, of course.

all i can picture when i hear brad pitt trying to sound serious is his doofus gym instructor character from the coen bros' 'burn after reading'.

He could have used his patois from Meet Joe Black.

Alternate narrator: Silent Bob.

whilst we’re on malick, the recent netflix hit with the montana ranchers and, improbably, benedict cumberpatch, reminded me a lot of his classic ‘days of heaven’.

everyone should watch that movie. it’s a masterpiece.

A little too on the nose, don’t you think? I like my allegories a little more subtle. I think it does the job as a comedy, but in doing so (being funny) it loses a lot of the seriousness/urgency of the broader picture they are trying to paint. And the Trumpish satire is so overdone at this point. I thought it was very much a movie that was pandering to a certain kind of sniff their own fart liberals who could say, “hey, I get that reference!”

A History of Violence 10/10

One thing this movie does so well is "leaving it to the viewer's imagination".

A bunch of things referenced in the movie are never explained. It is up to your imagination to fill in the blanks based off small snippets of dialogue. What is also great about that is that the dialogue is pretty natural since people don't explain inside jokes or past references when they are conversing with each other in the natural world.

The five things in the movie that are never explained but leaves you wondering are:
Spoiler (highlight to read):
1. What were the traveling killers up to? Why were they killing people randomly?
2. What did Ed Harris do to make Viggo take his eye out?
3. How did he take his eye out?
4. What was Viggo like in the mafia before the story
5. How did Viggo make it to this small town

The movie doesn't have any flashbacks to explain any of this. It just leaves it up to the viewer to make up their own theory while focusing on the basic premise of the movie: a guy's history of violence catching up with him.

The above director also made this movie that I remember only seeing once when I was like 10. I didn't even know its name until a few minutes ago when someone mentioned it in film analysis of a History of Violence. Does anyone remember this?

history of violence is a very good movie, yes. that's the director who famously did 'the fly'.

haven't seen existenz. have seen another movie he did, though, an utterly lamentable adaptation of don delillo's 'cosmopolis'. don't see that one.

hand of god - 9/10.

huge fan of sorrentino and this is one of his best yet, i think. his career-long partnership with toni servillo is one of the great actor-director pairings.

caught up with some of his filmography recently:

the consequences of love - 8/10
il divo - 7/10
the great beauty - 9/10 (stays good on rewatch after rewatch)

Golden globes were yesterday? Anyhow the winner's list is as usual a list of obscure movies.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/79th_Go … obe_Awards

"These movies aren't obscure you just don't pay attention to cinema and instead watch..."

I am looking at the list of movies and most of them didn't even break even at the box office. Yikes.

it has been a disastrous year at the box office. even spielberg's movie did pretty poorly. let's not pretend that box office gross is a good indication of anything (was it even before the pandemic? many 'classic' movies now were box office flops, or recouped their budgets in the rental after-life).

will smith as 'best actor' in anything is pretty lolz. cannot take that man seriously in anything.

could have predicted 'drive my car' would win. i should probably rewatch it but no real urge as yet.

i want to see 'liquorice pizza'. paul thomas anderson is one of the best directors in hollywood today.
