can we all just take a moment to recognise dilbert's huge sacrifices and moral exemplitude here.

the guy doesn't eat food that he's 'never liked' according to his palette.

truly we are walking among greatness. the choices he has consciously made in his life, for the sake of the animal kingdom and gaia ... his near-religious renunciations moves me to tears. i feel like i'm watching a latter-day christ, washing the feet of the meat-eaters.

i've never liked much seafood, especially shrimp/prawns, those disgusting fuckers. i should really join greenpeace.

You must be kidding about seafood. I love seafood.

Did you know seafood is not a big part of NYC/NJ cuisine? Yeah there are fish markets in NYC but our local waters are too polluted to fish. So a "fresh fish" thing didn't develop here despite us being on the coast.

dilbert's two-bit psychology makes perfect sense, when you think about it. the guy has turned every default position that has fallen into his lap in his life into a moral standard that makes him feel all fuzzy-wuzzy and better than everyone else, by dint of doing, well, absolutely nothing, really.

has never actually liked eating meat: spends his days online pretending he's doing it for the environment and makes sacrifices most other people aren't prepared to make.

has lived at home with his parents for his entire life, literally never leaving their homestead: spends his days online criticizing 'selfish travellers' and claiming that 'no one ever needs to get a plane or travel'. how convenient.

heaven forfend that dilbert had actually had to make some actual choices in his life and become an independent adult! imagine if his parents had emigrated away to a different country and dilbert had stayed or gone somewhere else for work. i wonder if he'd be such a darling of the no-travel environmental movement if he was the one who had to drive 250km or hop a border to see his loved ones.

i mean, aren't you close to maine and mass and all the new england lobster grounds?

i don't really like seafood, no. fish is okay. mussels/oysters, occasionally, if i'm eating out. ditto with lobster and crab. i suppose they're enjoyable enough when you're near the sea. a fresh crab sandwich in cornwall can be a fine thing, once per year. no to things like octopus/squid/cuttlefish (especially the way they serve it here, still alive or moving on the plate). definitely no to all the other weird shit that gets dredged up from the deeps and served on people's plates tasting like little else than salty seawater.

i never cook seafood at home. don't live near a good fish market and any recipe beyond fish fillets (i.e. cod, salmon) are onerous to prepare.

with regards to prawns/shrimps, i take a strictly anthropological view. those things look like they're from the moons of jupiter. no way did evolution ever intend for us to come face-to-face on this rotating ball of muck. they belong in the deeps. the fact we can even suck this weird-looking shit from the deep ocean is just our perversion of nature by technology and tools. primitive man could never source a giant shrimp. fuck that.

Maine and Massachusetts then and now are so thinly populated compared to the Mid-Atlantic. Less ships coming and going. Less waste to dispose of. NJ alone has more people than both states combined. The people in upstate NY probably interact more with the people in New England. NYC area is much different than everything north of it. So New England Clam Chowder, Lobster whatever is fancy shit you get when you visit Boston. I am sure the people in Boston talk about authentic Philly cheesesteaks like those are special.

I love fish and chips. That is one thing I wish we had in America. Fish and chip stands. You know where I got to go to get fish and chips? A tavern nearby. $15 a plate.

Is beef and chicken on a stick popular over there? I get this street food whenever I am in NYC.

skewered street food is popular in korea, i assume because of the american influence. lots of skewered chicken and those notorious 'mystery meats'. i never eat hot dogs out of self-respect for my body. they look like abattoir slurry stuffed in a condom. it goes without saying, in this aggressive and exclusivist monoculture, those american foodstuffs are really popular in korea (cf. spam, fried chicken).

not popular in the UK. you might get a sausage in a fish-and-chip shop. not something i've ever ventured.

Does South Korea have an obesity problem? If they took all of our food they must have some issues with obesity.

Thank God the Japanese surrendered after the two nukes. If we had to conquer them they would have assimilated all of our fatty food. Probably would have had to name a baseball team after them too. The San Francisco Samurais.

I've had decent fried frog legs. Family thought I was crazy for trying them out at the Asian buffet. Never formed into a habit. Probably unsustainable and numerous, unnecessary cruelties involved. On cruelty, same can be said for a lot of chicken farming. Cornucopia.org keeps a list of the farms that, among other traits, melt beaks off, vs. farms that do not, vs. farms that won't report. Exposé on pig farming was fairly unpleasant, watching grown men spike piglets into the concrete like footballs. Another of workers drop kicking birds into a truck. Crap dumped into the ocean by commercial fishers and the sheer waste on the decks of those ships. All that said, it is possible for some people to be more selective about and attentive to what farms they buy from even if it means paying a little more.

Out of all the things we could be poking fun at dilbert for, maybe we should allow him his vegetarian conceit (he doesn't even bring it up much that I've noticed), even if vegetable farms also do kill animals. Mostly when I see veg stuff talked about in social media, it's vegetarians being shit on. Sometimes with bad faith science.

Dunking on vegans and vegetarians is pig man behavior. Sticking to a diet and world view like that takes effort. Meanwhile many pig people can't commit to simple sobriety and not hitting their girlfriend and kids.

Making fun of vegans is also a form of making an identity out of consumption and products. Oh wow, you bought special edition Joe Rogan bacon strips. I bet you also own a bunch of guns and a yellow snake flag too. Gotta keep the gay away somehow. Fry up those Joe Rogan strips.

How cool would it have been if a snake was our national animal though? Cobra Commander could have been the hero, and Mexico's flag would've been one of the best memes.

Whenever I see that yellow flag:

there are basically no fat people here. i’ve seen fewer than 10 obese koreans probably in my entire time.

they are extremely active people. hiking weekly and gym are the norm, not an exception or some niche pursuit. and they don’t eat giant portions. almost all of the food here is meant to be shared in a group, over a table. no giant plates stacked high with shitty calories. if they eat fried chicken, it’s a communal event with everyone sharing a modest amount.

there’s also the not insignificant factor of fat-shaming ans extreme beauty standards. like to the opposite and neurotic degree. really beautiful girls in their 20s get plastic surgery. men are wracked with insecurities because they don’t all look like the perfect hunk from k-dramas, etc. being ugly in east asian cultures is a life sentence. that goes for places outside of korea, generally too. even best friends or relatives will say to one another, meaning well, ‘you look fat/tired/dirty today, you should exercise/rest more’. showing concern about other’s appearance is considered a positive social expression here. imagine telling your friend or even just a work acquaintance that they look like shit and should do something about it.

There was a big chance with Jungle Book, but Disney turned Kaa into a bad guy.

In Kipling's books, Kaa was Mowgli's wise mentor, akin to Baloo and Bagheera, and was very protective of him. When the characters were adapted in the film, Walt Disney did not like the idea of a benevolent snake and so Kaa was given an antagonistic role that would serve as one of the many reasons why Mowgli must leave the jungle.
Another perhaps underrated Kipling snake (Jack Nicholson narrated this one once in signature drawl, maybe worth a listen if you can find it), bi-colored python rock snake, spanked the Elephant's Child for going around asking about crocodile eating habits, which was apparently quite reasonable in the animal kingdom. And then when he got caught by a crocodile, it was the snake that helped save him from becoming dinner, and then taught him how to use his newly elongated trunk.

Kipling snakes are rad.

Quick google search reveals there's been some positive snake stuff in children's animation. Sahara, White Snake. Rather the exception to the norm. When you think of a snake movie, you're probably thinking Snakes on a Plane, Anaconda, Python. Whatever Lord Voldemort is. Incidentally, there's also that one youtube(?) series with the cute animated jumping spider I think with the aim to change people's perception of the critters.

snakes are sacred symbols in lots of cultures. i think you’re being a little bit too judeo-christian about this whole thing.

Noticed a bit of the same in the Asian community here. Old friends, friends of friends, to a lesser extent distant relatives.

Sometimes the non-Asians will take exception to it, which sometimes made for a bit of interesting people-watching and anecdote-listening. "Can you believe she told me I should go get a facial?"

Yes, yes I can.

Their takeaway sometimes is that Asian people are too forward, rude. Misunderstandings that are hard to dispel without getting sucked into someone else's drama.

Party. Downed a liter of champagne. All good on that front. No marijuana and that part of the brain that screams "you want the good stuff" is lighting up. I would sacrifice blah blah blah

Dear Ken Jenning,

I just had a bottle of champagne. I do not like drinking but my state hasn't let dispensaries sell marijuana yet. Can you go to your local dispensaries and buy a bunch of marijuana carts, stick them into some packs of Magic cards, and send them to me in NJ? You know my name, and address. I will give you my credit card info.
