Chassis/keyboard quality is disappointing to hear. Like could they have just repurposed their design from the previous gen. Either buy the one with old hardware or buy the one that looks cheap.

It's not even like there's a theft-deterrent for having an old-looking laptop. They'd get stolen regardless.

i'm sure the keyboard itself is fine, the apple keyboards have been great since their butterfly-switch experiment/debacle.

but a very disappointing aesthetic. it looks like they've taken one of those budget $20 rubber-dome keyboards from walmart and just dumped it into the middle of their chassis.

lots of reviewers are calling it 'nostalgic' and celebrating it. ugh. i am not nostalgic for large, bulky tech.

A proper "nostalgic" laptop should be about as thick as a compact briefcase. Might wait to see what the next gen has to offer then. Critical on space here and I have a lot of backlog dejunkifying to get to. Several boxes of old clothes all ready to be taken to the 2nd hand store. Gotta see if the local pc recycler takes old UPSs. Thinking hard about just Kondoing everything I don't absolutely need. I've unified off-site storage to one location, but it's still a lot of stuff at the back of my mind.

i mean, every monitor i've bought and used in the last couple years has supported USB-C/lightning capability. while i initially resented having to buy a tonne of USB-C cables, having it as a 'universal' cable for so many things, with the ability to daisy-chain multiple devices, carry power charge, deliver audio+video, etc, just made it a superior high-bandwidth cable.

HDMI, by contrast, feels really bulky – as in the cable itself is thicccc, the port is large, higher in fact than both of my recent retina macbook models – and a giant step backwards. with a USB-C cable you can do multiple things, whereas carrying a HDMI cable adds to your 'mobile' laptop set-up. this is one thing i'm actually happy to see relegated to a dongle or simple cable-convertor (like ethernet, for example, which has plenty of USB adaptor solutions).

As I've skimmed things, the USB-C solution is the way to go for now.

Displayport 2.0 seems like it'll be a step above HDMI 2.1 in terms of bandwidth, but who knows how hard it will be to get a 4080 or whatever the heck NVIDIA comes up with. My computer probably couldn't run high settings 4k, let alone 8k, and a new one I could build now would probably choke on 8k. Something like that is probably going to be years out for me.

4k at 240hz sounds beautiful, anyway.

I think my current monitor has DP 2.

It really didn't like my ATI card at all, failed to notice the computer had shut down so I had to shut it down manually using the stupid samsung joystick thing which died twice and had to be repaired twice under warranty, seems a lot happier with the Quadro.

My sisters $16,000 Pioneer plasma is still going, after a few repairs - the local tech shop guy is a Pioneer enthusiast or something and is able to repair it for, er, about the cost of a nw TV.... - now its connected via HDMI the picture is even better but we can't change the aspect ratio.

Still like the plasma picture, OLED is painfully sharp. Each time the Pioneer has a hiccup I have to research alternatives and Sony Bravia QLED seems to be the current pick.

the new apple laptop screens finally have some sort of firmware smooth-scroll option that is the same as ultra-high refresh rates. haven’t seen it yet though. it isn’t even supported in their native web browser, so i guess it was pushed out in the latest model with ‘fix later’ on the dev pipeline.

C drive SSD started to fail. Was able to plug laptop drive in and continue playing. Being annoying today tho trying to set it up for longer term use. D drive was at 100% active time today rendering it unusable.

We'll see how it goes. At least need 1tb replacement, maybe two and one as a backup. Maybe more ram also. Only at 16gb

Sorry to hear that, though it reminds me to run a backup soon. Been a bit, most of my drives are old, and it would be my own darn fault at this point if I lost data.

the data is mostly fine, was able to pull it off but even a fresh windows install was having explorer.exe crash and recover.

course now i gotta install everything fresh. which is fine by me except for a handful of programs / games with mods

I think I have a copy of my laptop stuff, on a copy of my Windows 7 stuff, on the side drive of my current W10 installation. Kept them around in case I'd need anything off them. I haven't touched them I think since ever.

You should get one of those SSDs that connect directly to the motherboard. I have one of those now. The speed difference is noticeable.

Def will be in my next build. I think my current mobo predates those. Funny seeing their prices go down while graphics cards are still $$$$$$$$$$$.

I bought the same SSD model lol. It'll be my backup until I get a m2 one. It lasted 4.5 years.

First SSD is like 10+ now as the Windows drive (same age for the 4TB mechanical), second maybe 5-6 where I put demanding applications. I think I've been rather lucky with this PC, aside from Microsoft's blunders and RMAs of early video cards I had in it. I think I RMAd the RAM I'd initially put into it as well.

The more I think about it, the more I don't feel like putting together a new PC. It's not like I have racks of this stuff I can grab off the shelf while I wait for the RMA to go through.

Ride the thing as long as you can. There aren't any games worth upgrading for anyhow.

16 GB of RAM is causing me to max out and crash when running some application combos. More or less idling with my browser and some background processes up, around 25%. Last I checked, some DDR3 was as much if not more than DDR4. So much for the idea of upgrading to 32GB later. I should have done that years ago.

The longer I can hold on, the better equipment I can replace it with, and the more mature Windows 11 will be. As it stands now, I don't meet the requirements for the new OS.

2022 may be the year for this though. Most of the components are over (10 years) old now, and I would like to do some updates before I'm left without my primary computer for like a week. Pair of 16 GB DIMMs, an OK cpu (basically most new > 2600K at this point), decent mobo, new PSU, OS SSD, app m.2. Same chassis (ugh, but cooling specs), same opticals, same video card.

I've also got twin 10TB mechanicals to install. Could either RAID them or just use all the space and have my entire Steam library on, lol.

I took the twin HD I had in RAID out of my PC and bought one of those external expansion things. I would suggest you get one of those instead. You don't want to be locked out of your porn stash when your computer dies. You don't want to have to yank out your HDs before you take your PC to microcenter right?

External enclosure is an extra expense. I have plenty of internal drive bays, and they're the kind where the drive is easy to remove if need be. What could one person do with 20TB of porn? Would be like dust out of a desert tap and a lot of overdue introspection.

I wasn't lying when I said my Steam library is large. One of the reasons I don't get to a lot of the games is the time wall spent installing them. Although having maybe 20 installed now and the constant updates steam runs me through does not make me look forward to queued updates for like 1000 games. More likely, I would only have a few more installed, but ones I uninstall/reinstall frequently due to them being like 100GB+ would just remain installed. The rest of the space would probably be taken up by photo editing and video projects.

IT guys shouldn't really be making a habit of digging through other people's personal files. It's appreciated by some though if clients do them the courtesy of not having that stuff as a desktop wallpaper.

Some of those guys probably have more wild kinks than you. In any case, it would be a little like worrying about a doctor seeing your balls during a physical. Nothing they haven't seen before.

One of my smart bulbs seems to be one its way out. I think it is from 2019. Maybe 2018. It dimmly stayed on last night while the others were out. Instead of getting up to manaually turn off the lights I just put the covers over my head and hid from the light like a vampire.
