Already done, we have cats and dogs.

House now seems empty, soulless and cold.

Looking back our two cats did fill our homes.

How many shelter cats are languishing in Australia?

A lot, we'll probably get one.

I've got some vivid memories of shelter animals. Sadly, can't rescue them all.

Do your shelters do that thing where they have the reason the animal was given up on its card? I can recall some infuriating stuff.

No, its always "the past owner could no longer look after them"

We've agreed we'd be fine with an older cat.

I've seen stuff like "moving, new place doesn't allow pets" (lots of military reasons). "Owner died," or "can no longer take care of animal." I think I some said they just didn't want the animal anymore. "Kids won't take care of it," or because it grew up (unstated: no longer cute).

Some reasonable stuff, some not.

I have never owned a cat. I went to a friend's house and noticed on his couch there was a long haired cat with big eyes staring at me. I didn't think it was real the way it looked and how it was wide eyed staring at me. I had to ask if it was real. And my friend was like "yeah, that's a cat".

Cats are creepy animals at least for people who have never owned one. The cat just stood there gazing into my soul.

I think it has a lot to do with people expecting human or dog behaviors and body language, but it's a cat.

Ever wonder why cats might go to the party guest(s) who make the least effort at befriending the host's pets, or maybe even actively avoiding the animals?

Dogs are much better than cats then.

Dilbert needs to get a dog.

When you understand how a cat works, you look like less of a child when dealing with the animal. A perfectly good pet that won't eat the face off of a neighborhood kid if it escapes containment.

Most people don't understand cat behaviour, this is where most problems come from.

If some huge beast came into your house uninvited would you just start doing tricks or go to sleep?

Side note, I've trained cats to play fetch, faux-roughhouse without claws. Positive interaction during their crazies, they'll see you as a source of fun rather than just food or lap warmth.

I've seen dog people try to get cats to warm up to them using stuff you do with dogs. Usually a little embarrassing to watch.

Yeah, cats just glare and stalk off - then people think they're unfriendly.
Very few cats will be your friend instantly.

The neighbours cat is hilarious, he plays pranks on their dog and did so to my cat.

Want to attract women? Keep your cat out of your dating profile
That's the takeaway from a study by Colorado State University, which found that women are less likely to swipe right -- or say yes -- to men if they're posing with a cat in a picture.

Scientists showed hundreds of women photos of two men, both men pictured with and without a furry companion.
Their responses showed that the men's luck got noticeably worse when women saw the picture with a cat.

"Men holding cats were viewed as less masculine; more neurotic, agreeable, and open; and less dateable," the authors wrote.
When shown the cat-free picture of one of the subjects, 38% of women said they were likely or very likely to casually date him, while 37% said they'd consider a serious relationship with him.

But a picture of the same man holding a cat gave the respondents paws for thought -- and those numbers dropped to 33% for each category. Meanwhile, the proportion of women saying they'd never consider getting involved with him rose from 9% to 14%.
The science is real. Get a dog. You can talk to women you meet while walking your dog.

One of the best ways to have a cat or a dog is to have both. The shenanigans are great entertainment. Sometimes the dogs initiate, sometimes the cats.

@mac, don't pretend that dog owners aren't weird. letting them lick ya on your open mouth bleugh.

also, dog owners after their animal mauls someone:

You are acting like the only dogs are murderous pitbulls. Get a small dog that will be happy to see meet guest instead of death staring them. Get a pet you can go on a walk with a friend or girl.

You're talking to a person who had a chihuahua as a family dog. I brought that stuff up because of your "there's this weird #*& cat, ma" anecdote preceding how bad of a pet they are.

re: your study - Would you really want to get in a relationship with a woman who thought less of you because of your siamese cat or whatever? She'd probably go ditch it in the rural countryside to "live on mice" and tell you it got lost.

"Millennials are treating pets like their "firstborn child," and it's reportedly causing problems for some of the best-known pet food brands.

Good. A lot of those are probably tied to Nestlé anyway.
