I guess I will check to see if they have a display input on them. Hopefully they don't have a proprietary Apple display port. I had to buy an adapter to plug in my HDMI big screen into my MacBook. I overall like the MacBook. Very good usability. No random updates. I haven't tried to install any games on it but other teachers have and I guess it is better functioning in that department than Microsoft wants you to think.

on the new macbooks that only use their lightning ports, just get one of those multi-use dongle things. they normally have a HDMI on them in addition to any number of extra ports. it's an annoying extra expense but i barely notice it when i'm at my 'workstation' or a desk. alternatively, i know some office power users go the full hog and buy one of those desktop 'docking stations'. you can have your macbook in clamshell mode to the side and have a full suite of inputs/outputs/connectivity on the hub in front of you.

and yes, i've always maintained that for day-to-day use and functionality, the apple ecosystem works better every time. OSX is really seamless and just about the only interruptions you'll ever get are for big system updates. mine barely ever crashes, has no bugs or glitches, no driver compatibility issues, etc. etc. the thing just works and runs very stably.

Trying to buy a new car but everyone wants a few thousand $$ over sticker due to tHe SuPpLy cHaIn ShOrTaGe.

It was fun telling the sales rep "oh no, that will not work" like I was some kind of concerned mom, but I am kicking myself over waiting a year to pull the trigger. A slightly used version was going for almost half the price of a new one last year. Now a barely used one is about 90% of the price of a new one. Dumb

Wait until the end of the month when car salespeople are desperate to make their bonuses.

I have complained about car prices for years.
-The estimated average transaction price (ATP) for a light vehicle in the United States was $42,258 in June 2021, according to the analysts at Kelley Blue Book.
There is no way in hell I am paying that much. Especially if I don't even have a garage or indoor parking. My dream is to never have to own a car. If I get a job/place where I can walk across the street to work, that would be great.

Yeah the end of the month thing isn't quite working these days because of the shortage. I'm going to go to all the dealerships in the area. FWIW the price was essentially the ATP above.

I wish I didn't have to own a car either. In suburban Southern California a car is often seen as an extension of your personality due to the amount of driving that's needed.

What car did you try to get?

The road salt and snow in my part of the country fucking wrecks cars. Buying an expensive car and not garaging it...no.https://www.autobidmaster.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/How_To_Protect.png
Working on cars has probably made me bitterly resentful of their existence and warped my perception of them.

Suburu Outback Onyx XT. MSRP is $38,500 or so. Sales guy wanted $41,000 plus tax and title.

Why do you need a SUV in sunny California? Are you going to go off-roading that often?

I want it for camping/backpacking. Some trails and sites require a bit of traveling on dirt or unmaintained roads.

I currently don't/can't off-road at all bc I drive a Toyota Corolla.

The other option is getting a used car for camping, but I would still want another one for my daily driver. And then I'd lose the extra space in my garage.

I would highly suggest a used car for camping and off-roading. Taking a new car into the forest? Yikes.

Also make sure not to leave any girlfriends in the forest to die before you flee the country. There's some of that going around. I appreciate the novelty of it though.

Nice car, do you really need the turbo? Extra cost, fuel consumption and maintenance, and I think you can only use premium.
Maybe you do with all the hills and the engine being nerfed for emissions.
Only thing I've heard is the gearbox is not suitable for towing, whatever the vehicle is rated for.

Still hoping my 2004 Forester keeps going a bit longer, I wouldn't want to be looking for a car right now.
Its fully depreciated, every year is ~U$2000 in my pocket.
If it dies, and I think its blowing a bit of oil into the aircleaner, I might get another old one. Its not too scary because I've found a good mechanic who is very reasonable. I know someone who did a lot more km than I've done, changed the piston rings and did a lot more.

The only other vehicle I could be bothered looking at would be a RAV4 hybrid.

I can't use that giant thing. I am between two rooms all day and have no space to even put that in either room.

I had to buy a second charger because I can't keep wasting time moving chargers between rooms and I am also afraid one class will break my charger when I am not there because teens don't respect other people's property.

I bought an Apple official charger from Amazon for $79.99. Expensive but I didn't feel comfortable plugging my work machine into a $20 unbranded connector. Amazon basics didn't even make a charger though they make a lightning port to HDMI adapter I trust enough to use.

I like the MacBook charger. The light, the magnet, etc. Chef's kiss. I know it is a proprietary plug but is also nice that you can trust every MacBook to use the same plug almost regardless of generation.

I don't like that slowly Apple is dragging me into their ecosystem through the purchase of dongles and chargers.

If I were to buy a new laptop for myself someday, it would be a MacBook though I haven't taken the time to really learn the features, how change settings, etc. I really don't need to play video games while out and about which is it seems the only thing Windows has over Apple. I am sure Apple occasionally annoys people with UI updates but the forced updates of Windows, driver issues, compatibility issues, UI changes, settings reset etc. has really soured me on anything Microsoft.

I don't think I will ever switch to an Apple phone. I like my Google phone a lot.

I don't need the turbo, but they stopped making the 6 cylinder version (maybe just in the US? Not sure) and after driving a 4 banger for years, I'd like something with a little more getup.

The Rav4 hybrid is something I've taken a look at, but not too closely. From what I've read, the Suburu driver assist/autonomy is a great feature.

I don't plan on towing (and the towing capacity isn't that great, all things considered), but maybe I should take another look at the Rav4. My mom just bought one about a month ago, so I don't even need to go to the dealership!

You do know that the cylinders are bigger though?

If you need it for hills or whatever then great, I just see a lot of people coasting around in turbo and supercharged cars and wonder why, its not as if we have autobahns.
Its an easy up-sell for salespersons "surely you want more power", apart from the WRX Subaru don't even market turbos here.

Of course if you don't buy it every time you need more power you'll kick yourself.

Reddit ad I saw:

"Frank Miller has teamed up with NFT powerhouse Gala Labs and Concept Art House to create his premiere collection of scarce digital art. In celebration of 30 years of SIN CITY, this art showcases the neo-noir classic in a bold new way, and you’ve got a limited chance to own one while supplies last."

God damn it is so easy to make money once you have an established nerd brand.

i broke the cable on my ridiculously expensive pair of earphones. thankfully everything is fully replaceable, as you'd expect at that price-point.

the solution: to purchase a ridiculously expensive MMCX cable!

i went to one of seoul's many audiophile stores.

https://i.imgur.com/hMEwkA8.jpg

this place was insane. it almost made me feel like a peasant, to be there with only $200 as my budget for a cable. they had the whole gamut: earphones made by tiny american or korean brands which retail for $4000 (these in particular were very nice). amplifiers and headphone amplifiers way in excess of $10,000. cables for $1000.

you could sit and listen all day to anything you wanted. they had a nice little café. amazing spot.

https://i.imgur.com/TChZjgd.jpg?1

https://i.imgur.com/AzhrxZY.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/6tSwr0H.jpg

(i know it's mostly bullshit and different rare metals only create minor changes in impedance and sibilance, but fuck you. part of the cost i'm willing to pay for earphone cables is in their construction and durability, as they're nearly always the main break-point, and nice custom cables come with hefty jacks and well-soldered connections. and it was too hard to just source a straight replacement for my european-brand earphones in korea. i didn't want to wait 3 weeks for customs to figure it out and tax me.)

the standard replacement cable is £70, plus shipping, plus import tax, plus a month without earphones that i normally use everyday.

i spent £120 to have a much better made cable, with more robust jacks and notionally better audio quality. plus they're balanced. balanced vs unbalanced does make an identifiable difference in that the impedance is very different and ultra-sensitive IEMs react differently at different impedances. ditto with the change from copper to silver for the cable material, as the metals obviously have different resistances. these things are not academic when you're driving the earphones from a £1000 amplifier that has been engineered for miniscule impedance ratings.

i never claimed that buying expensive cables is a huge upgrade in sound, but it will change the overall performance and 'character' of your listening experience, in that you're literally changing the impedances involved in your signal chain. (try a pair of high-impedance headphones on a variety of different amplification sources, say, starting with a low-power phone output, and tell me that it's irrelevant to the sound you hear.)

but yes, it's nice of you to always remind us that, as an engineer, although you've never worked in audio applications, you naturally know everything there is to know about sound.
