I think in this case it's understandable. If I worked in health care, I would be glad to see someone, who shows up to an anti-vax rally with swastikas, leave my profession.

I'm not sure tiktok is particularly special in "callout culture," seen the same shit on so many other social media platforms. Including reddit. @yourlink, what's even real anymore.

e: no really, why the hell is there a trailer trash catfight happening outside of a mansion? surreal.

The federal government will restore '100%' of pay to any school officials who are punished for defying state mask-mandate bans, Biden says
Pretty uncucked. The kind of no holds barred politics that the last admin was into.

I am extremely doubtful the Department of Education has the legal authority to do such a thing. I think state governors have more legal authority to ban mask than the DoE can compensate people for defying their legal state authorities.
People dying because of COVID is more important than the governor's control of schools.
Okay but did we learn nothing from 9/11? We maybe shouldn't be so quick to break the law in defense of the "right thing" at this very short moment of time.

This is why you should wear a face mask. No one will know who you are if you bully a child.

I don't think this is the right direction for society to take. IMO, a more measured response would be to scold the hecklers and then ban them from participation in these meetings for a time, and not uproot their lives and give anti-vaxxers and anti-maskers yet more martyrs.

I would be canceled on some platforms for saying that. Thank goodness there's this fossil from the mid-aughts to fall back on to get that opinion out. People these days think nothing of toxic conformity online or ruining someone's life over a stupid or mean comment, or even one that goes against the flow. Wandering from the meeting hecklers for a moment: high school would have been living hell if I'd been born ten or so years later and someone had uploaded a video of the civics teacher making me the class antagonist, a personal project of sorts, because I disagreed with some of his liberal opinions. That kind of stuff doesn't make people change their minds. It makes them withdraw and fortify, or seek shelter and solace in groups of like-minded individuals.

Someone gas lighted Tom Cotton into thinking he could he president. He looks and acts like a Lizard man. I would be unsurprised if he licked his eye like an iguana on t.v. someday.

'tom cotton' sounds like a stereotypical villain name in some antebellum/plantation south daytime schlock movie.

and i love how the republicans have sown distrust and confusion over the scientific messaging on covid, and now are accusing biden's executive of talking to the public 'as if they are children'. well the only republican lemmings who have plunged off the deep end of vaccine skepticism and covid denialism DO think like children, don't they? trump effectively infantilized about 40% of the american base. they're all impulse, wish fulfilment and temper tantrums.

Also would work for a Hideo Kojima villain.

Cotton has a point that the administration will have a hard time persuading people to get vaccinated. Although maybe he leaves out the part about how in current context that a lot of that is Republicans' fault for towing the anti-vax line. Now some Republicans are backpedaling and telling people to please get vaccinated. A little too late for some.

The Biden mandate is a political football, and Republican politicians feel obligated to bluster against it. Anything Biden does is a political football for Republicans. Object, or be outed as a RINO.

The president might as well, as mac puts it, be uncucked.

he's taking the 'stern paternal figure' line, which is the correct course of action following 4 years of 'infant anal-oral fixation stage' trump leadership. the body-politic needs discipline to rectify its maladjusted, infantile behaviour.

behaviourism actually plays an increasing role in democratic leadership. there's a whole niche subfield of 'political nudging' now, being researched and utilised by governments. the conservative party in the UK infamously has a 'nudge unit' which they use for a lot of their strategy and messaging. it's not unlike enlisting psychologists/behaviourists on COVID taskforces, to understand the social compliance/rebellion aspect and to help bring things like burnout/attention waning effects into the counter-measures.

a very real part of fighting a pandemic is timing the messaging/lockdown measures so that the population at large don't get utterly fed-up and bored with the whole thing just at the peaks when they need to be most vigilant.

I am not totally convinced a lot of the COVID restrictions that governments put into place were even constitutional. There isn't a constitutional right to own a bar where rat people can spread diseases but if the government wanted to destroy the local service economy overnight, they should have passed a law doing it instead of ruling through executive order. I am sure there are many laws that empower state and federal executive departments to shutdown businesses in the interest of public health but shutting down one or a chain of bars is different than broadly shutting down everything.

Of course this is Monday morning quarterbacking. If we asked Congress to to draft a lockdown bill instead of moving quickly by executive order in early 2020, many people would be upset we didn't use executive orders to get the ball rolling early or they would be angry about the specifics of the bill. And the pig people who refuse to believe COVID is real until it offs them will still refuse to believe COVID is real until it offs them. But at least we would have some sort of framework for navigating how we react to this pandemic instead of riding the executive order whims of whoever is in office. And there is not a single person in office who knows anymore about what the future holds than anyone else.

I don't want to get into more specifics about what is going on with work and COVID but we received a directive to allow "mask breaks" in rooms without air conditioning. But for only for the two days this week where it will be very hot. So we will be the mask police someday and mask break counters the next.

I am vaccinated and I still wear my mask when at a store, etc. But in schools...it is onerous at least on the staff. I don't want to go on the record advocating no mask mandates because I don't want to be made fun of if I get the COVID and die but I am leaning towards living and let live now that I got my shot.

There is practically no use in wringing your hands over what Biden could have done to appease the Trump camp. Joe could snap his fingers and make COVID and unemployment go away, to no avail. There is literally nothing he could do besides fabricate/produce a story and documents "proving" that he did in fact steal the election, turn himself in, and somehow the government magically reinstalls Trump.

Witnessed my first covid tantrum today.

I was in Jaycar, getting parts to help troubleshoot the cat-bed-warmer

Dreadlock dude comes in:

"Sorry, you have to wear a mask to enter this shop"
"I can't wear a mask, I have a medical exemption!"
"Show us a copy"
"You can't make me show you!"
"Yes we can, here's the text of the act, its a $10,000 fine for us"
"I don't have it!"
"Then you'll have to leave"
"Don't you want me to spend money?"
"Not without a mask, no"
"You people are sheep! I'll spend my money elsewhere"
Leaves, comes back
"Don't you want me to spend money?"
"Sure, but with a mask - here we can give you a mask"
"Don't you know masks reduce your breathing by 20%?"
"Either take the mask or leave"
"Fine, give me the mask"
"I thought you couldn't wear one for medical reasons"
"Just give me the mask"

The shop assistants were fairly nervous, I half thought the twat was going to start a fight or start pushing stuff over.

I feel like a parent trying to get a child to put on their seatbelt when I'm driving someone to pick up a vehicle sometimes. Put your mask on, no I don't care if nobody else at the mechanic's is wearing one. Maybe it's also like trying to get a kid to wear a helmet at the skate park when none of the bigger kids are.

Outside of those situations, the most I've seen personally is someone remembering theirs halfway from their car to the store and having to turn around to retrieve it. I do live on the blue side of a blue state, though.

Is your job asking for proof of vax? Is your job at least keeping track of people vaxed?

Mask mandates in schools seem to make less sense as time goes on. Putting all the kids in cafe without a mask and then telling them to mask up on punishment of blah once they leave. The governor decreed that schools aren't even allowed to give parents a virtual option which I agreed with at the time. In practice it turns out some kids refuse to take off their mask to even eat their free lunch. I expected some kids to be nervous but not to the point where they don't eat lunch. That is something that needs to be fixed. There should have been a virtual option for parents to enroll their kids that also had safe guards to prevent kids from softly dropping out to work at an Amazon warehouse.

"Free Lunch". That is going to be something to get used to. It would be in character for our country to give the kids a year of free lunch and then yank it away.

The War on COVID sometimes seems like the War on Drugs. That would be a biting analogy for right wingers to make if they at least recognized the War on Drugs was a mistake.

Nope and nope. Not a 100+ company. Although the heads were forward thinking early on, jumping the gun on masks, they've since swiveled into the quasi-webmd "oh, I think I've already had it," COVID-vaccine fear, irritation about being nagged by big brother about masks and social distancing, and (sometimes understandable, given inconsistency) resentment at imposed state measures that negatively impacted the company. If I pushed too hard, it would probably make things worse.

That said, if we found out one of our guys drama-coughed at someone at the local supermarket, there would be a lot of internal pressure to let them go.

I've heard a ton of anecdotes from high school kids in interviews who said the mask stuff was sparsely followed or enforced. Maybe they should move it into the dress code list at a higher priority than disallowed hairstyles.

I wonder if an Amazon manager has ever grabbed an employee's lunch and scooped it into the trash in front of all his coworkers?

Like most rules, I expect face mask will be used to trip up certain people while being ignored for other because reasons. The War on Drugs analogy really does well here.

Again in practice a lot of this stuff is a little ridiculous. I have come to understand that now that the government is forcing me to go back outside. There are very few people who follow guidelines 100% anyway. (Left me take my mask off to drink some water. casual acquaintance has marijuana? Let me hit that. Want to hook up with a girl you just met? YOLO.)

In other news, an aide I talked to on Friday checked into a hospital today. He left a message on Facebook that was basically "pray for me"

Caught the covid in mid August. Probably the sickest I've ever been and also ended up with pneumonia and had to spend the night in the hospital. Still don't feel 100% normal even tho I've been testing negative for over 2 weeks. Crazy cause u hear about this shit happening to other ppl but never think it's gonna happen to you. Should've got the stupid vaccine but I also tested positive for antibodies last year so I thought I was safe. Either it was a false positive or antibodies don't mean shit. Either way 0/10 would not repeat. Also convinced my brother who was skeptical of the shot to get his first dose last week
