I am visiting South Carolina. I am leaving Friday morning and coming back Saturday night. So I don't need to take much. I have luggage. Can I take my tactical backpack as carry on instead?

Will your barbed wire baseball bat be strapped vertically or horizontally to your tactical backpack?

That's the beauty of having a good, decently sized backpack.

Why?
A lot of people wanted a fun celebrity. They instead got this guy.

Mike Richards, who was named the new host of “Jeopardy!” last week, is abruptly leaving the role as the beloved game show after a report this week resurfaced offensive and sexist comments he made on a podcast several years ago.

Mr. Richards, who as the show’s executive producer helped oversee the search for Alex Trebek’s replacement — before he himself was named to the position — said on Friday in a staff memo that the controversy had made “clear that moving forward as host would be too much of a distraction for our fans and not the right move for the show.”

“As such, I will be stepping down as host effective immediately,” Mr. Richards wrote.

Sony Pictures Entertainment, which produces and distributes “Jeopardy!”, had announced Mr. Richards’s new role with great fanfare, calling him a “great talent.”

But a report in The Ringer this week unearthed past offensive comments made by Mr. Richards on a podcast that led to denunciations from critics including the Anti-Defamation League.

You were disappointed about the pick due to something that just became public this week? That's some weird foresight.

No I was disappointed we didn't get a celebrity host. Did you read the article about long article on him, the process, and the complaints?

No, I couldn't care less about the palace intrugue surrounding the coronation of a new game show host, no matter how much I enjoy said game show.

This affects you. If you read the article you will see that the now canceled host used to be executive producer and had plans to take the show into a new direction.

I finally clicked on one of the articles and am thoroughly underwhelmed by the scandal. Certainly, this no-name executive producer probably shouldn't have gotten picked for the hosting gig. However, I abhor these "scandals" that seem like terminally-online Twitterers trawling through the archives to find something that sticks. 10 years ago, it was certainly hacky to make those jokes, but is any of it that bad?

Disclaimer that I am not a huge Jeopardy fanatic.

Growing pains for many industries, people realizing that certain behaviors in the workplace are probably unprofessional and belong in the past. The guy had multiple lawsuits against him? How much trawling through archives does that dirt really require? We know beyond allegedlies that some of the stuff he said was kind of gross even for the year. What is the boundary where too little to matter becomes significant enough to acknowledge, really?

Maybe he's not Bill Cosby, but do we need a jerk as a host when there are other options?

Fans made a big deal about various candidates they wanted, and there were candidates who wanted it. Then this guy gets promoted from within. It's like that meme of Obama putting a medal on Obama.

Point of trivia, Mayo Clinic says there is no evidence that growing hurts. That they may be psychological or linked to a lower pain threshold.

Everyone I explained the hiring process to also agreed that it was a screwed up system. It's really hard to find anyone excited about the guy considering there were so many celebrities to pick from.

There's two issues with what he said. The first issue is that he was putting that stuff out there with his name attached to it as a professional project. He bought a domain to host the podcast. It's not like he was making poor jokes at a private dinner. Rarely does anyone get cancelled because of somebody leaking audio from a dinner party. The second issue is that his job is basically to read off questions, joke with the guest, and have a good time. He has to deal with fat people, slutty people, Jews, etc. as part of his job. It's not like he is an artillery officer or some other role where nobody sees him.

Finally, cancelling average people because they said something bad at a Walgreens pharmacy is definitely wrong. Media people getting cancelled for doing dumb stuff in the media is very much "dying by the sword". I can be awful online anonymously but I am total pussy cat 🐈😺 at work and on Facebook where things actually matter.

Flipped off a guy who was doing 5-10 under the speed limit in an area I could pass. He was like half a mile ahead when he turned off the main road I caught up in less than a minute going the speed limit.

Anyway this happened at the end of the road he turned left
I turned right. He got mad and turned around and passed me once I let him then stopped in the middle of the road and got out of his truck. I went by on the right side after he got out..

Funny thing is he was ok speeding then. Must have gone 20 over.

I ran across this article about a tiki bar reopening and also clicked on some of the embedded links about how the history of such things are "problematic". While I'm liable to agree with the various points made about colonialism, it seems a very niche and weird thing to devote time to and differentiate between "tropical drinks" and "tiki drinks". Decent rage-read, though.

If you exist you live on land that was taken by conquest from someone else at some time.
This applies to all of Africa, Asia etc too, amazingly, not just countries populated by white people.

Europe should remain European like Japan should remain Japanese. North America, South America, Australia, and New Zealand should sort of be "for everyone".

The whole debate about cultural appropriation is more complex than young people who read the definition in their sociology class thinks. It's also more complex than the people who live on Fox News think too.

I like the idea of people finding cultural things from other groups, and then modifying or improving upon them. Tale as old as time. When cultural appropriation takes place added with the exclusion of the original maker's group then it is problematic. Like white teens liking rap music but hating black people is bad cultural appropriation. A white guy discovering Buddhism and converting is cool.

Being angry about white people going nuts over Taco Tuesday is silly. White people opening a taco place and then mistreating the Mexicans who come in is problematic.

I think the vast majority of people aren't bothered by cultural appropriation anyhow. Kids love to have diversity events where they get to bring platters of food to introduce people to their ancestor's food for instance. Most normal people like other people going nuts for their stuff.

Black people wearing clothes is the biggest crime of cultural appropriation.

Much of the world dresses like westerners. Much of the world doesn't too. The biggest dividing line seems to be when you get to Muslim countries who refuse to adapt to our style of clothing that most of the rest of humanity has found functional. They dress like us in East Asia.
