Images shared to social media appear to show US military dogs being given seats on aircrafts intended to evacuate people from Afghanistan.

As hundreds of desperate Afghan citizens descended upon Kabul Airport in a bid to flee the Taliban, it was reported that the American canines were reserved their own seats on the flights, with photos appearing to show them sitting on aeroplane seats alongside handlers.

Other images showed the animals waiting to board the flights – used to evacuate US citizens and former staff in Afghanistan – at the international airport, and broadcast footage showed Americans entering the airport grounds with the dogs.

Why didn't they just set the dogs free?

That link has some rich stuff, Trump of all people talking about embarrassing times for the country. So fitting that he's working to undermine his successor at every turn. Very classy.

Setting the dogs free would not be a good plan. Take them or put them down.

Leaving them behind would not have freed up enough seats. Send more planes.

Rescuing collaborators and US citizens who wanted to leave should have been all sorted out in 2020.

Holy mother of God this is the craziest pit bull video I have ever seen.

*NSFW*, Ken, this is newsworthy.
"One dog viciously attacks another as it walks by. Several bystanders struggle to stop the attack."

Without you specifically writing "pit bull" I'd have guessed it. Still, you can get caught up in the semantics in a lot of this stuff, ex: "was it really a pit bull, was it a mix, was it just one of the bully breed."

AKC doesn't seem confident in breed specific laws to get this under control.

The Tiny Tyrant is on his last legs, final stages of kidney failure, just keeping him comfortable at present.
They rarely go in their sleep so he'll probably have to be put down eventually, probably a matter of days.
Also pretty sure I witnessed him have a heart attack about a week ago. Nothing to be done though.

The little fellow finally popped off, had him - or really he had us - fourteen years.
Always a wrench.

genuinely sorry to hear that dilbert. my aunt is the only 'cat person' in my family but i can painfully recall her own grief when she lost her cat. 14 years is a long time.

Sorry about that, dilbert.

It can be tough even if you aren't really a cat person (I don't consider myself a cat person the way the stereotypes go). Had some last 2, had some last 20. The one that hit me the hardest was a sweet and klutzy tux, maybe around that age. Almost had to pull over for a bit on the way back from the vet to get my bearings and wave off the sense of doom. His last meal was cheese and chicken.

You'd think being staff at a vet's office that you'd get used to it, but no. They grow fond of the animals and it hits them too when they pass. I guess you just have to do your best to rationalize it as doing what's best for the animal and the people.

vets have some of the highest rates of workplace depression/anxiety, stress and burnout. mostly because the people who are motivated to go to vet school rather than regular med school are often people who 'love animals'. it's interesting that medical school, especially in the upper echelons of surgery, seems to properly attract dispassionate (even psychopathic) types. but vets willingly volunteer for a career in which they're around suffering and dying cuddly animals all day.

Would you call a vet a doctor? I assume the very basics of dog biology and human biology are the same. You know, breathing and all.

Thanks, all you can do is do your best while they're alive and we did that.

Vets do suffer for sure, often putting down perfectly healthy animals because they don't have owners or the owners don't care, won't pay for treatment etc. Also they're around drugs, euthanasia meds etc and use them all the time.

Vets do more training than doctors, there are many kinds of animals.

People are selfish and miserable about pets, a colleague wanted a specific type of labrador, he knew a couple who were splitting up and didn't want their two any more so they took them to the vet to be put down, the vet refused because they were perfectly healthy, my colleague wouldn't take either because he wanted a dog from a puppy so he could enjoy the puppy stage.

We rented a house for a year to see out the last cat, to cover visa timing issues.

@mac A doctor of veterinary medicine is certainly a doctor. There is also some crossover in medical research between human medicine and veterinary medicine.

@zeek I've read that the admissions boards more or less require that an applicant display a love for animals.

@dilbs Money is also a really tough issue. Without a poorer family deciding to adopt, an animal might have just been outright euthanized by the animal shelter. By living with a poor family, they have a chance of life, even if the people can't afford the best of care and most expensive treatments in the event of severe illness (may not even be able to afford that kind of care for themselves). A trained vet, having been admitted to veterinary school by virtue of a love for animals on top of everything else, has to be able to parse this sort of situation and not lose their mind. Very tough, I imagine.

Someone who hasn't been to the dentist in years probably isn't going to be able to afford comprehensive dental for their GSD.

being a vet is 'harder' from a diagnostic point-of-view. your patient can't speak or tell you what's wrong.

i think vets probably have it easier than surgeons, though.

I am buying my sister a cat for Christmas. We agreed to this.

Is pet owning slavery? I don't see how it is ethical to buy an animal.

Another interesting question is the human self-domestication hypothesis. Are our rights violated for it?

The cats got a good deal. Hamster, guinea pigs, and all other herbivore creatures are probably better off living in our homes.

I feel like dogs are shortchanged though. God clearly didn't program them for indoor living. Can't even get them to bury their waste.

In the wild, wolf dens are kept clean by mom eating pup poop. Not enviable to (most) humans, but I suppose really interesting stuff for a canine. I wonder how many people who say the wolf is their totem know that wolves, like dogs, will eat poop.

Cats are kind of boned by deleterious breeding too. Breathing problems for flat-faced cats and horror in the world of munchkin breeding.

It would be cool if we could bioengineer lions, tigers, and bears to stay small cute cubs forever.

Wolf pups 'adopted' by Idaho high schoolers killed by federal agents
Conservation groups have expressed outrage after the US Department of Agriculture revealed it killed eight young wolves in an Idaho forest.

The pups were part of the Timberline pack, a group of wild wolves tracked and studied since 2003 by students at the local high school in Boise.

Federal officials have defended their actions as a "necessary" measure in reducing the predators' population.

But local wildlife groups say wolves are "under attack" in the region.

Earlier this year, lobbied by the livestock ranching community, Republican-dominated legislatures in Idaho and Montana passed measures that made it easier to hunt and kill wolves.

Idaho's version of the law allows hunters to kill an unlimited number of wolves each year, up from a 15-wolf annual limit
, and triples the budget for population control efforts.
...
Environmental groups have warned the aggressive tactics will whittle down Idaho's wolf population by 90%, from roughly 1,500 to 150, which is the minimum limit enshrined by a 2002 conservation law.

Supporter of the Idaho wolf-culling law have said wolves pose a threat to wildlife, particularly cows, sheep and other livestock.

Van Burtenshaw, the state senator and livestock dealer who introduced the bill, said reducing the wolf population would benefit "our cattlemen, our woolgrowers and outfitters", as well as the big game hunters forced to compete with the wolves.

Beautiful. Exterminate the wolves to make the big game hunters have an easier time shooting animals for fun.
