I am very salty that I need to create a HP account in order to use the software to scan a physical document over WIFI. Another login to remember.

Apparently my apartment supplies a router but I need to supply my own if I want wifi according to the document they gave me? I've not had experience with that before, but I don't see any way to connect to this current one outside of plugging in ethernet.

Has anyone used Office 365? I am using the desktop version of it since I get it for free through yadda yadda. If you haven't used it this may surprise you but the desktop version of Office 365 has features a standard license version of Office Pro doesn't have.

I use 2019. I've always hated committing to subscription services.

You need to wrangle yourself an .edu email. I don't like that I am technically under my university account but it's not like I have terror training manuals on my PC or something.

I already dislike the prospect of making a second MS account because I don't want to transfer my Minecraft license to the one I use for Office. I already have two uplay accounts and that's a pain in the ass. Ended up disabling two old games on Steam because if I try to launch them, uplay will switch me to the old account (I forgot about years ago before I made the new one) with the two games on it and send any ubisoft game I buy there instead of my new, main one.

Uplay refused to merge the libraries and I'm not buying those old games again.

o365 actually isn't terrible. The suite of products they have are decent and built towards online collaboration. Downsides are same as pretty much any online service- constant updates, annoying popups constantly pushing you integrate more into the service, occasional account access issues (tell me you've never had to log in multiple times so I can call you a liar). I prefer it over the earlier iterations.

Ever used Google Docs/Slides/Sheets etc.? Ever used Google Classroom. GC is a good collaboration platform.

Yeah I've used Google docs and sheets for a long time. I've used OpenOffice too. o365 is much better.

OpenOffice Calc is hot garbage. Very crashy, lags on large files. Maybe they fixed it since I used it, but sticking with Excel.

I am slightly embittered o365 desktop version has better features than the "PrO vErSiOn". The spell checker seems to check an internet database. I have not had to Google how to spell a word yet.

My desktop outlook app keeps checking *the cloud* when I type someone's email address. So it seems they have now pushed the contact list completely to the cloud and do no local storage. It's annoying and has led me to accidentally delete a few names in my contact list.

A few authors' comments I've read indicate that some despise getting grammar/spell checked and autocorrected while working on a project. 365 could connect to every dictionary on the planet, and I'd rather shut the feature off until I'm ready to pour through my draft a day later.

I'm skeptical of putting too much stuff into cloud storage. Password manager databases, contact lists, etc. Cybersecurity is tough enough without worrying about even more breach vectors.

Speaking cybersecurity, some phishing attack recently within our circle of businesses. Ran it through one of those free services, came back from the middle of the country (whatever that means with VPNs) with ties found to social media accounts. Not just a hijacked account either, it used an exec name and changed one letter in the @, cc'd to a bunch of people in a target company. I'm not paid to give legal advice though, so I just forwarded the results with the usual search disclaimer and the usual rigmarole copy/paste about "staying safe in cyberspace."

eat a dick, microsoft (game save files)

FWP you'd think after however many years Microsoft has making operating systems, that they could create a file manager that can correctly sort filenames based on month name or abbreviations, located anywhere in a filename.

I personally use yyyy mm dd to avoid issues here, but people still like using month/day/year and if it's the spelling, it's sorted wrong, and if it's a number, everything is chaos (1/2 or 2/1, are we talking Jan or Feb, come on!). It would be much easier to just tell them to type Sep or Aug instead, or have a button in office or file explorer to append the date to a filename (since transferring files from one device to the other messes up dated metadata).

In the trial phase for Kamo, which I installed off of an update for Ccleaner. My youtube suggestion bar is now filled with movies unrelated to anything I've been watching. Pretty neat, but kind of pricey per year.

Google Play doing Stealth app updates is something. Chrome updated with at least one new feature. I like it FWIW.

My company decided my job didn't warrant the licence cost for acrobat.

"Dilbert we need you to come in urgently and fix up all this stuff ASAP
Also you're not having the tools to do your job"
All very weird

So I spent the last year printing out documents, annotating them in pen, handing them to the admin assistant to be typed up.

Honestly didn't give a fuck, also gave me an excuse to annoy the QA idiot who shared a room with the admin assistant.

"You can't come in I'm in a teams meeting"
"How am I supposed to know that?"
"The door is shut"
"But you keep the door shut so you can fight the AC with your fan heater"
"Um, just don't come in"

Sign up for a community college and get a .edu email. You get all sorts of free or reduced software. My Office 365 is free through my university.

The really stupid part is the company has one PDF form, and there's no reason for it to be a PDF form, it could just as easily be word or excel.

So 5+ people need an acrobat licence just to fill out a form which doesn't even need to be a PDF

Save it as a word template and then from word, save it as a pdf when filled out.

Needs to be the specific form

So stupid.
