HAF is still among the top chassis for airflow, but I feel 110% done with the aesthetic, the hard-to-clean angularity (needs yet another hour with a box of q-tips and denatured alcohol), and having the walls of my office painted white and blue by light from the LEDs and video card. There is a cubby under my desk that it might fit in, but I think I'll have to remove the interior shelf as the case is very tall. Need to make measurements, want at least four inches of clearance. If it doesn't fit, I might going to probably cut an opaque piece of matte acrylic to replace the wide window and at least minimize the glare.

This has come of for me before, anyway. The front panel may be the make or break deal, I'm not sure where motherboards have cone in terms of decade+ old connectors.

Still getting avast alerts on bf2s. Newbie gave the site HIV

Same with the alerts. I don't know if something changed on the AV, on the site, or if it had anything to do with the problems/attacks yesterday. But the connection is still being blocked which I take to mean the AV is either doing its job properly or getting a false flag.

If it means anything, the other program of mine that was failing its phone home stuff is now connecting just fine. It had problems yesterday that I don't think were hinging on AV interference.

Avast no longer flagging that advertising cdn site as of right now (still was a few hours back), although firefox still shows the rapid connection attempts(?) to it.

Concur.

Other people on this site didn't report any issues so I assume the issue was with Avast.

Actually I was wrong. It's still popping up in the alerts list, but the program just spontaneously entered silent mode for some reason. Maybe because I launched a game. Having a browser attempt like 20 handshakes with a site that has "advertising" in its name just leaves a bad taste, lol.

Definitely some type of ad injection. I bet that's why burnz is back- to see if his little project is working

The guy who mentioned "vibe of malvertising, but no solid proof" pretty much nails my at-a-glance feeling.

Highly suspicious stuff that should be reported to the Inquisition.

PC nerds freshly stirring at the 50+ million Americans not being able to get some Alienware computers shipped that don't meet new energy regulations.

Dell Can’t Ship Majority of Alienware Gaming PCs to California, Colorado, and Other States Due to Power Consumption Regulations
https://www.thefpsreview.com/2021/07/26 … gulations/

On one hand I welcome the incentive to make fast machines that run with less. On the other, I'm not seeing that big commercial district energy consumers are cutting back. It somewhat strikes me of dumping the responsibility on the little guy's lap while you spill oil into the Gulf of Mexico kind of ordeal. Overclocked gamer with two monitors is the bad guy, not the bitminer warehouse sort of deal.

I think the definitions of computer types are also overgeneralized.

Will take a bit to digest.

American energy regulations are typically stupid, especially Californian.

The kWh expectations are where it seems really off to me.

An average computer with very efficient parts left on 24/7 may consume more energy than a workstation running fewer hours in a day. TL;DR how you use your PC is a big factor in how much electricity it uses, and this legislation doesn't address that that I've seen. If it does, they did a good job hiding it if I didn't simply overlook it.

It would make more sense to me to encourage citizens to put electricity usage monitors onto their outliets so that they can see what they're spending, rather than just bluntly hamstringing your state by demanding standards for high end parts that the majority of a company's products do not meet.

Do any vehicles measure your distance driven and fuel consumption in dollars? Seems like you pay at the gas station and forget about it.

Anyway it seems like more paper straw stuff to me. Reducing single use plastics important, yes. Kind of sucks to make all these individually punishing measures a thing but still allow some of the biggest wasters are still allowed to waste, pollute, and ruin as they please.

I've seen some recent activity on right-wing blogs, forums, wingnut sites while looking around for news and reactions. A bit of a feeding frenzy going on that may actually do harm to Democrats and reasonable environmental regulation if it continues, and some of the complaints/commentary are reasonable.

"'Stop buying cutting-edge PCs' say rich liberal snobs who live in hugely inefficient, resource-wasteful mansions." "Stay in your good-citizen poor-pods while we pat ourselves on the back at a party on our oil-spilling yacht."

Stay tuned, I guess.

I don't know if it all went down before or after my Malwarebytes trial ended, but I do recall uninstalling the program and reinstalling without reupping into a new trial phase at around the same time?

Maybe some part in the trial/paid MWB suite prevented this issue from occurring altogether, although I still noticed it on the day there were a bunch of cyber attacks, so maybe it's just so much chaff.

Will test later, thanks Burnzzy.

I desperately need something a lot stronger than my RTX 2060. I need a RTX 3080. How do I get one around MSRP? Is that even possible?

Buy a whole new computer with one in it before your state tells you you can't, lol. The market value on that stuff is about computer-priced anyway.

Your chances of getting an MSRP 3080 rn seem on the level of or lower than finding a Wii at Best Buy for its release year Christmas.

Do you really need one? Why isn't a 2060 cutting it? 4080 on the way in like 2022. Speculation on a refresh or 5080 in 2024 lookin gat the AN/ANN roadmap.

Sometimes pops up, the rest of the time silent mode is in operation. No idea of when to see this addressed by avast or whoever, but I'm happy not connecting to whatever service that is.

snipe, re: computer restrictions, "gotta start somewhere"

Bitcoin mining companies operating in their very own private power plants. Wonderful news. If successful, we can see maybe even more of that in the future instead of greedy, bleeding edge PCs folding proteins or whatever. Way to go.

My avast flits in and out of silent mode. Sometimes I get the popups, sometimes not. When it does appear I just drag it outside my monitor's edge and forget it's there.

You're not seeing the bigger picture. This could be turned into one of those retro signature bars.

Get a raspberry Pi, install piHole, and run all the verified block lists, and you won't have this problem nor need AV for anything other than AV executables.
