Rep. Jim Banks (R-IN) had a message for the Republican Party’s largest conservative caucus in the House of Representatives on Thursday.

“Lean into the culture war. Because the backlash against Critical Race Theory is real,” Banks said in a memo to 154 Republican Study Committee members and their offices.

...
He also cited polling data from Heritage Action which found that Americans reject “Democrats’ vision of America.” According to the data, 64 percent of Americans disagree that America today has a culture of systematic racism and white privilege, and 61 percent of Americans disagree that America is a racist country.

“We are in a culture war. On one side, Republicans are working to renew American patriotism and rebuild our country. On the other, Democrats have embraced and given platform to a radical element who want to tear America down,” Banks said.
Mark my words: by the power of spite and negative partisanship, CRT and it's ideas will become part of mainstream American education. The right wing making a big deal out of this obscure nothing has given it attention and energy it wouldn't have gotten else how. Look at how well Republicans defeated LGBT stuff in the last decade as an example.

It's always a culture war with the Republicans. Civil rights was a culture war. Gay marriage was a culture war.

Republicans and losing wars, name a better duo. Bunch of fucking losers!

Republicans won the civil war and lead the way in ending slavery.

Which doesn't have much bearing on the Republican party of today. If we want to be reductive, the Union Army backed by northern states won the civil war. And even back then, not everything was "unified" for the Republicans.

Ah yes, the ole "I was sick the day they taught realignment" argument. Quick, what were the policies of the republicans that won the civil war?

So Bill Cosby is free. Free free. They can't retry him for the crime he went to prison for. I am surpirsed at Brietbart who is siding with Cosby in regards to checks notes everything. They like Cosby because he is a conservative who told black people to pull their pants up.

Brietbart commentators is using the line "the girls knew what they were doing when they went to his place and took drugs".

Why is this in the racism thread? Imagine throwing 50ish white women under the bus in order to have one black guy who parrots your views still out there.

The news stories about the black British soccer players getting harassed online reminds me of Larssen. Among young Americans that story is getting more play than Italy winning.

Wonder why, it's nothing new. European soccer fans are racist af. We have racism issues in soccer here but I never hear about throwing bananas at players. Or batteries, fuck mexico fans.
And being a minority just gives more ammo for online abuse. See Star Wars sequels Rose.

Rose had the unfortunate disadvantage of being physically unattractive even by Asian standards. The actress who played her sister should have been the one to play Rose instead.

Funny racism story: I have a childhood friend who has schizophrenia. He is harmless. He almost got beat up by a black man he saw that he was following in the street. My friend is just lonely and wanted someone to talk to so he followed the guy trying to initiate conversation. The guy probably feared for his life since he was being followed by a strange guy who kept trying to stop him to talk.

Innocent black man afraid of white man who was following him.
White man is just lonely but has severe mental illness.

Indeed that was funny.

black guy pays his fare. a squad of NYPD storm the train and tase him for 'evading a fare'.

how much is a train fare there, anyway? a couple bucks? this is how new york spends its tax dollars? 6 officers holding up a train and tasering people?

The City Council has consistently failed the people. In 2019 the failed to cut $1 Billion and this year they gave the NYPD an extra $200 Million.

The dude is so lucky. He will get a nice GoFundMe and if the facts of the case prove in his favor a bigger settlement from the city than any of our lives is worth. He can also then leverage it into a career as an Instagram influencer. That's an American dream with all can aspire to.

The Texas Senate on Friday passed legislation that would end requirements that public schools include writings on women’s suffrage and the civil rights movement in social studies classes.

Among the figures whose works would be dropped: Susan B. Anthony, Cesar Chavez, and Martin Luther King Jr., whose “I Have a Dream"speech and “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” would no longer make the curriculum cut.

The bill (S.B. 3), which was passed on a vote of 18 to 4, now is stalled because the House can’t achieve a quorum while a breakaway group of Democrats is out of the state. The special session is set to end on Aug. 6.

It would remove more than two dozen teaching requirements from a new law (H.B 3979) that bars the teaching of critical race theory, an academic framework exploring racism’s shaping of the country.

That law included a list of historic figures, events and documents required for inclusion in social studies classes. The Senate-passed bill would remove most mentions of people of color and women from those requirements, along with a requirement that students be taught about the history of white supremacy and “the ways in which it is morally wrong.”
I mentioned before that this is where the CRT thing was going. A bunch of people who think even mentioning slavery and racism is CRT.

Atlantic Article: This Is the End of Affirmative Action. Article isn't great but explains a little of how AA came into existence yadda yadda. Important part:
The Supreme Court may soon hear a case—Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard—that could mark the definitive end of affirmative action in higher education nationwide. If the Court takes the case, the plaintiffs will argue that under no circumstances should race be taken into consideration in college admissions. They will make this argument before a conservative majority that many observers believe is sympathetic to this view.
I remember reading the New Jim Crow back in like 2013.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_New_Jim_Crow
The age of the book shows how behind on the subject a lot of anti-CRT harpies are. Anyway, the author argued that black people need to give up affirmative action if they want genuine equality and that Affirmative Action creates more resentment than help.

I agreed with the author at the time and kind of still do. But considering people are allowed to live in their own reality and pick their own truths, I don't think getting rid of AA is going to do a lot to make people less angry. I think plenty of people upset at the whole concept will continue thinking AA is in effect no matter what SCOTUS does. People who think COVID is a hoax and Trump won the election etc. aren't going to acknowledge the SCOTUS ended AA. So seeing the SCOTUS strike down AA is going to produce some weird feelings.

Final sidenote: I would genuinely like to know what the end game of the right is in regards to all of this race stuff. Okay, you got rid of AA and banned CRT from schools. Great, but the demographic shift isn't reversing. What is your plan to stop bigger generations of non-whites and their white allies from seeking political revenge in the future? We should all probably seek de-escalation.

AA is easy enough to understand the basics of, but a lot of people can't detach themselves enough to analyze it objectively. Without that, it doesn't look like a fair way to address unfairness at all.

All groups getting equal treatment for hiring and enrollment dependent on qualifications is an ultimate goal even some racists/sexists can get behind. But people are less sure on the how to get there, and some think we're already there and have been for ages just because blacks and women got the right to vote or whatever.

The country could break its own spine backwards to try and please Trumpers and those in their orbit, and they would remain angry. There would be no give-and-take, no compromise. Liberals and Democrats are scary and anti-American, and totalitarian right-wing rule is the answer. Expert opinions that contradict yours are overbearing and censorship and "I guess we can't have an opinion, huh."

This is all going to take a long time to level out.

i read a pithy line, something along the lines of 'most people don't want democracy, they want a dictator they agree with'. democratic processes are meant to be there to enfranchise and give voice to the weakest and most marginalized groups – literally an equal say to the most powerful and the mainstream.

affirmative action was flawed as hell in many of its particulars but the idea to help the most powerless in society get a nudge onto the ladder hardly seems like a great evil.
