You've never seen pet owners let dogs lick them on the open mouth?
Sometimes I see it excused as "good for your immune system." Blech.

It's definitely some Millennial American white people shit.
Deli pasta salad. Not great, not awful. Solid thumbs sideways. Might be better if I put it in a colander to drain the bulk of the oil.
Speaking of colanders, saw one "for berries" today. I think 99% of the berries I ever bought had that functionality built into the packaging. Seems redundant, semi-fwp. Might be good for my grown berries but the wild critters get those first. Doesn't bother me, but I'd like to set up containment for some of those plants all the same.

Any amount of alcohol consumption harmful to the brain, finds study

dilbert's going to have to do another hasty deep-dive on an academics' biography to accuse her of being bent/corrupted/etc.“There’s no threshold drinking for harm – any alcohol is worse. Pretty much the whole brain seems to be affected —not just specific areas, as previously thought,” said lead author Anya Topiwala, a senior clinical lecturer at the University of Oxford.
Using the UK Biobank, a substantial database designed to help researchers decode the genetic and environmental factors that lead some people to develop diseases while others do not, researchers in this study analysed data from 25,378 participants such as age, sex, education, self-reported alcohol consumption, brain size and health from MRI scans, information about hospital and outpatient visits, and memory tests.
Higher volume of alcohol consumption per week was associated with lower grey matter density – the researchers found, with alcohol explaining up to a 0.8% change in grey matter volume, even after accounting for individual biological and behavioural characteristics.
This might seem like a small figure, but it is a larger contribution than any other modifiable risk factors. For example, it is four times the contribution of smoking or BMI, said Topiwala.
Widespread negative associations were also seen between alcohol consumption and integrity of white matter, the brain fibres that scaffold the billions of neurons that make up grey matter. In addition, an individual’s underlying conditions such as high blood pressure and high BMI made the negative association between alcohol and brain health steeper, the researchers found.
Contrary to previous research that suggested there is a benefit to drinking wine in moderation compared with beer or spirits, the study found no evidence to suggest alcoholic beverage type conferred differences in risks to the brain.
The associations of wine-drinking with higher educational attainment and socioeconomic status may explain the perceived health benefits, the authors suggested. “If you look at who is moderately drinking, at least in this country, they are better educated, wealthier people that would do much better on a memory test … just because of who they are, than people that are less educated,” said Topiwala.

We've done this before, ecstacy and cocaine fuck up your brain far more than mild alcohol consumption.
Literally bits missing compared with a 0.8% grey matter reduction.
And a heavy week for me would be less than 20 units, looking at the data thats right around the flat part of the chart on every measure.
On a good number of charts ~5 units a week seems to give a benefit, I'll drink to that.

I'll take that.In the evolutionary hunger games, the drunk apes beat the sober ones.

It's probably to the advantage of the booze industry to understate how harmful even a small amount of alcohol can be, and see it propped up as a "safer" vice than other drugs.
So worried about Indian housebreakers while you're drinking yourself to death.

According to nerdzique's charts I'm doing my brain good.

What foods do you often crave? I have weird cravings for beef often. Not ice cream or chocolate just good old cow.
any amount of alcohol is harmful to the brain. it is neurotoxic. the social and psychological benefits of consuming alcohol in small amounts belong to the realms of anthropology, not neurology.Dilbert_X wrote:

in less sanguine contexts, needing alcohol to be present in occasions of social bonding or creativity is called 'dependence'. it's the little cousin of addiction.
the social and societal 'boosting' effect of ritualised alcohol consumption have also been celebrated, passim, with coffee consumption, too. there's plenty of theses that the discovery of coffee and the establishment of coffee houses, gathering places for urbanites to sit and discuss things whilst buzzed on a novel stimulant, contributed to the great scientific revolutions of the early enlightenment.
the speculative health benefits of alcohol were always cardiac related. and that is now being disputed. it's certainly no good for your brain, liver and kidneys.

My food cravings usually revolve around stuff that's salty or sweet.SuperJail Warden wrote:

When I'm hungover I usually want a greasy hamburger
I like foods that I shouldn't a ton of. Warmed naan (don't spare the hummus), spiced croutons, triple decker pbj, egg-in-toast, cheese and bread stuff, giant pretzels from the German bakery, instant jin ramen, Italian pastas, meals to make with tortillas (tortillas = monster calories), buttered or salted popcorn. I also have the misfortune to enjoy the taste of some energy drinks, but lay off those unless I'm on a car trip. Staying on-list is a good way to keep from filling up on junkier foods and buying stuff I still like but isn't terrible for me.
Baby carrots, broccolis, peppers, stuff generally that goes good in stir fry, plain yogurt (great with honey), bananas, avocados (they're cheap here) various red apples that are great sliced with a very light salt drizzle, green apples (salt makes those taste weird), baked onions, dolmades (huge value packs of these things at restaurant supply), some boxed soups (soft spot for potato-leek). Things I can have on a plate with little to no prep. It's not that I don't enjoy cooking, it's just the space is smallish and not very enjoyable to work in.

You're dependent on alcohol and class a drugs then, congrats.uziq wrote:

i enjoy taking drugs sometimes, yes. when have i ever denied that? where is the ‘need’ in that scenario? i go out sober to socialise too, derp.
the point is i know they are harmful and carry risks. alcohol is one drug among many and is more harmful than most. you consume alcohol pretending it has no negative effects or health risks at all. total bunkum.
we all take calculated risks every day. many of our lifestyle choices take years off our life expectancy. whether it’s living in pollution-clotted cities or treating ourselves to red meat (and booze). we all have a finite amount of biological oomph and we spend and misspend it as is our want.
i’ve never denied that at all. if my recreational drinking and drug use in my 20s took 3 or 5 years off my life expectancy, i’m fine with that. but most drugs have this mechanic, of spending your tomorrow’s today. you consume alcohol like it’s somehow exempt from all that because … err .. some government legislation and tax regime says so. not very fucking smart.

Alcohol is highly taxed, not sure why but anyway.
Fuck Israel
err yes, exactly, which legitimises it and had embedded it into society. the health costs and consequences be damned. in the same way that marijuana will gradually be accepted in the next few generations.
the difference being that weed and any drug trying to attain legality today has to go through strenuous health testing. there’s no way that alcohol and tobacco would be approved if they were new today. the state purse and industry are too cozy.

as have any number of other drugs arbitrarily declared as highly illegal in the culture wars of the 1960s/70s …
we should have a war on motor vehicles. maybe it’ll be as successful as the war on drugs.

Some news station the other day was going on about the rise of teenagers in the hospital for "cannabis reasons." It had dark music hits and serious faces. Nowhere mentioned were other certain drugs that definitely cause many teenage deaths and poisonings. If ads were enabled, maybe one of those certain drugs might've been in a commercial.
Jesus fucking Christ. Was not expecting that second picture.
