There is a strong possibility that the cop is purposefully misrepresenting the law. But I would guess that if the law is as he describes it, it is to prevent cops from using marijuana as an excuse to stop and frisk people. With this law if a cop initiates contact with a civilian based off of the sweet sweet smell of marijuana and the civilian gets killed for whatever reason, the cop is still liable for something?

Cops don't generally stop you for DUI because you smell like booze. That would require a grizzly bear-level sense of smell.

"The American Cultural Revolution Will Leave Scars"

National Review wrote:

America is in the grip of a cultural revolution. Decades in the making, this revolution was born in our colleges and universities, which provided the shock troops now leading the charge. These young men and women stand ready to topple statues of our nation’s Founders, remove monuments to presidents, rename schools, censor speech, and redraft curricula. They do so because they fervently believe that they are better than their hopelessly retrograde fellow citizens, who remain blind or, worse, callously indifferent to the alleged ills that plague our society. College and university campuses across the country have been transformed by leftist faculty into seminaries that each year anoint into the “woke priesthood” more credentialed but hardly educated men and women.
...
Like all past revolutions, the scars that the American Cultural Revolution will leave on our society and our democracy will be permanent.

Bitter paranoid screed but whatever. I don't feel like a member of the social justice woke yadda yadda but these articles really annoy me. They don't annoy me because they advocate cultural stasis. They are annoying because it is all in service of an economic agenda that helps only the richest Americans.

That is almost word for word what I get out of conservative arguments: that people want to topple everything that makes America, America. A phantom rebellion. Again misrepresenting kneeling. No mention of the small, actual insurrection that took place at the capitol earlier, aiming to disrupt the succession process (and maybe kidnap or murder a few legislators). It's like, actual cops in the rioters, attacking cops on duty. Don't want to talk about that? Fine. Let's talk about the one time an antifa guy threw a water bottle at a police line earlier last year or whatever.

No mention that some of the statues were of confederates, problematically erected decades after the war in part to front race politics. Or that some of our own monuments are nothing less than the vandalism of wilderness on an epic scale (Rushmore, I think for the record, sadly what's done is done). Or that removing a statue does not rewrite history. Or that the former president actually did want to rewrite history until it smelled like a rose.

I have no interest in seeing America cease to exist. I would like to see us become better, though.

re: dui
If cops can still pull people over for dangerous or erratic driving, see open bottles, do breathalyzer, etc., then that should still be working as intended for alcohol. If their ability to get people for driving on pot is somehow impaired, it should maybe be revisited.

liberal progressives or reformists are literally working within an active, democratic tradition. almost all of the workers/labour rights that average americans enjoy today were wrested from those in power through the exact same means (if not more violent and more insurrectionary means).

making out that they are revolutionaries setting powder-kegs underneath the foundations of democracy is inane, and an incredibly old ploy of conservatives the world over.

One of the favorite things mentioned to change the subject away from the capitol riots are the free zones set up by protesters last year. Also something I do not support, and there they lose interest in that track.

One of the guys, his favorite hobby is watching American history shows. I don't get how someone could see so much of the civil rights movement over time, be enjoying said rights, be distrustful of the government and big corporations, yet think "that's enough, we shouldn't have more rights." There is a disconnect.

They reverted to robbery, rape and murder practically on day one.

Neither socialism not libertarianism work, amazing.

weren't the free zones mostly a bunch of anarchists, who are indeed very close to libertarians in certain parts of their ideology?

i don't see any properly organized socialism or communism in the united states, and yet the terms get used again and again as if there's a huge fifth column.

That's my impression. Response from local governments have ranged from disappointing to practically non-existent. Seen super smug cops posting about the violence within. Like bro, you're a central part of the issue that caused that nonsense. Have some shame.

Another damaging headline for the US's already shoddy reputation.

I think the whole kneeling for the anthem is stupid. I think the parents who want kids to do virtual pledges of allegiance and anthems are dumber. I always made my homeroom kids stand for it in silence but if I no one is around and the pledge came on I would just continue whatever I was doing.

The anthem being played at all at a game is stupid. It's a game. The anthem, flag, etc. shouldn't be reduced to props at a sports game if we want to say they should be regarded with any amount of reverence.

We're well past that point though, they're circus props in everything from audio greetings cards to printed on napkins. And if sports budges on it one bit, it gets politicized.

The owner of the Mavericks actually stopped playing it altogether at their games. He said the players basically didn't care for it and the stadiums are empty anyway. The NBA forced the Mavericks to start playing the anthem again once their stadium subsidies were threatened. Mandatory patriotism.
Backlash to ending the anthem was swift in the Texas Capitol, where Republican Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick urged Cuban, in a tweet, to "sell the franchise & some Texas Patriots will buy it.'' Other GOP lawmakers suggested the tax breaks the American Airlines Center receives should come under new scrutiny.

Patrick said he intends to introduce a bill in the Texas Senate that will ensure the national anthem is played at all events that receive public funding. He said the bill has broad support.

"It is hard to believe this could happen in Texas, but Mark Cuban's actions of yesterday made it clear that we must specify that in Texas we play the national anthem before all major events,'' Patrick said. "In this time when so many things divide us, sports are one thing that bring us together -- right, left, Black, white and brown.''

It is ironic that stadium subsidies, corporate welfare, saved the national anthem.

I mean, yes? I don't think the US is in danger of losing patriotism if we wind it back a bit at xball games.
