Ask the commission, not me. It may have been intentional, it may have been a stupid mistake. They ordered checks on all vaccines leaving the EU and might not've considered the NI situation properly prior to deploying that policy. It might've been a commission employee who felt personally insulted by brexit and who figured out the move. Von der leyen personally could be a total idiot and have figured this out, for whatever reason. I don't know. Make of it what you will. In any case, it should be totally clear from this that the member states have plenty power to push back against the EU and that 'dictatorship' doesn't quite apply to a body that evidently can't decide what to do with it's "own" borders.

Trumpers are instead going to blame all of the deaths on Biden and the democrats.

Depending on the argument they're trying to make, I could see them both calling it a fake virus, and blaming the death toll on Democrats. There will be no mental gymnastics. Multiple choice reality.

I already see headlines saying "100,000 people have died under Biden's first month" But I mostly agree that they will either call it a Chinese Super Weapon or just the flu depending on whoever they are talking to. Whatever needs to be done to protect Trump because the democrats are evil and the party of gays and BLM.

In an hourlong conversation with The New York Times over the weekend, Dr. Fauci described some of the difficulties, and the toll, of working with President Donald J. Trump. (This interview has been condensed and edited for clarity.)
I know it is nice to have Fauci on the record for posterity but his quick turnaround kind of confirms what a lot of what Hitler was saying about his generals Trump was saying about his advisors being untrustworthy.

You've gotta wonder if Jay has had some sort of awakening since then, or if he's still in the crowd of angry unbelievers. The US covid-19 toll is what now, like ~20+ flu seasons? In little over a year. Is it alright to measure it in flu seasons?

Jay is probably burning his deck to stay warm so he doesn't have to use liberal wind power to keep warm.
If the arsenic content kills his kids he'll be able to sue the govt for allowing arsenic in deck wood.

Watched a school meeting about reopening yesterday. The school used Federal funds to buy things like: temperature checkpoint cameras, UV disinfectant lights, mask, hand sanitizer, and plastic screens.

What a waste of money. Schools don't need UV lights. If people just wore mask and stopped going to mass events for awhile we could reopen. But we have too many "you can't tell me nothing" people in this country who would still drag their kids to a superbowl party and send them to school with a cough a week later.

Also, even though schools are wasting money on UV cameras, we need to send more aid to schools. Print that money.

per the NYT, it's more than the total american dead from world war one, world war two, and vietnam. rolled into one.

a decade's worth of major world conflicts, generation-sundering cataclysms, in one year.

Americans are so used to viewing things in terms of a two-sided political brawl that I suppose it's only to be expected we'll follow along the minute a pandemic gets politicized.

@mac:

Yes, UV phone sanitizers work. That doesn’t mean you need one.

Some studies have found that viruses, such as coronavirus and norovirus, can survive on surfaces such as keyboards and cellphones. But the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has said that surfaces are not thought to be a common way that the virus that causes covid-19 spreads. “I think there are a lot of people who are trying to capitalize on people’s concern about germs and transmission of disease,” Adalja said. “Yes, you could do that to your phone, but I don’t know that it does much to decrease your risk of infection. I’m someone who takes care of covid patients, and I’ve never once done that to my phone, because I don’t have to.”

Reingold agreed. “I think this frankly falls into the category of security theater,” Reingold said. “I personally would not buy something to irradiate my phone with UV light at home, just like I don’t need my packages or vegetables scrubbed with Lysol.”

A common claim (often repeated by companies selling cleaning devices) is that phones are much dirtier than other household objects, such as toilets. But the presence of microbes doesn’t mean anything in terms of whether it can make you sick, said Paula Cannon, professor of molecular microbiology and immunology at the University of Southern California’s Keck School of Medicine. “It doesn’t mean you had any danger. If you took a tiny pinch of yogurt and put it on a plate, you would have hundreds of microbes, and nobody is going to say that’s more dangerous than a toilet seat,” she said. “It’s using semi-truthful scientific facts out of context to build a narrative to sell a product.”

[Even with coronavirus spreading, your phone probably won’t make you sick (but you should clean it)]

And trying to get rid of all the microbes that could be present on your phone isn’t a worthwhile goal, Adalja said, because it’s impossible; microbes are everywhere and on every surface or object you could touch — even on your body. Many of them aren’t harmful to humans, he said, and transmission risk from your phone is probably low. “Not all microbes are major transmission risks, but most of them can be obviated by just washing your hands.”
Imagine if schools instead waited for the vaccine rollouts and spent that money on things like facility upkeep, books, class funds, and not throwing a kid's school lunch away because someone else paid for it.

Regarding politics, I think this mostly flows down from Trump singularly. Liberals are kind of cowards. They would have gone along with fear mongering even if Trump was a part of that fear mongering. 9/11 is a good example of how that group can be cowed (🐄🐮) into anything. Once Trump decided that it wasn't a big deal the 40ish% of the country that supports him to their literal dying breath were going to follow along.

"The numbers are fake. All of the people who died had pre-existing conditions and were going to die anyway. The actual COVID date rate is 0.02%. Hundreds of millions of Americans already had it. Most of the deaths were in blue state nursing homes too. The governors of NY, NJ, CA, and MI got all of those people killed. Trump got us a vaccine with operation warp speed. He is an American hero."

Shortages of vaccine doses continue to blight national plans across the bloc, with Belgium the latest to warn of “serious delays” to its plans, with vaccination of people over 65 postponed to the end of March.

There is also mounting evidence of the AstraZeneca vaccine being rejected and left unused in fridges following weeks of bad publicity, including Emmanuel Macron’s unsubstantiated claim that it is “quasi-ineffective” among older groups.

I was linked to the video from an article. I would have to see proof and innocent until proven yadda yadda but she seems genuinely distraught. Whatever the guy did to her whether it was criminal or not she obviously didn't have a good time.

I wouldn't be happy with my daughters going into the military.

Military service as one of the main steps up the "economic ladder" for the children of super-poor families sucks. Treatment of people in the military sucks. Treatment of people once they leave the military sucks.

Join the army and enter a multigenerational war that politicians will only ever talk about concluding.

Big-brain, 42069 iq idea: imagine if instead of buying a bunch of tents and plastic shields and freaking UV ray guns we waited until the vaccine rolled out to more people before opening schools.
