This is amazing stuff. Really well done and incredible musicianship
wow 1990s math-rock is back. but why is it produced like a pop song? those drums sound horrendous. he's playing a full kit but instead the song sounds like the drums from a david guetta track. gross.

good musicians although anyone who has listened to hella or battles knows what a pinch harmonic sounds like.
is this your attempt at trolling a music post of mine, 0/10

no i'm surprised that that genre is having a resurgence. it was very popular when i was in school. i listened to it a lot.

but the drums sound horrendous in that song. the tom rolls - why are they recorded like that? honestly mystifying.

polyrhythms, pinch harmonics, jam-based songs ... very nostalgic.

hella was the original band of zach hill, you know, the guy the internet loves now because he's in death grips.

this is peak 'studying for university exams' for me.

That seems to me a very interesting choice to have on while being productive studying.

i associate it more with getting the bus to school rather than literally cramming textbooks but you get my drift. very pre-university, teenage halcyon days. i'd also associate WoW:TBC with that era. all fuzzy wuzzy.

i'm also not saying most of it has aged well, or i'd like it now, at 30. i don't listen to the fall of troy when i'm doing proofreads.

That makes more sense. I was very awed at your ability to concentrate with the first interpretation.

i do recall to listening to a helluva lot of noisy stuff during that era, when it was all very much in the air and the teenage 'scene'.

i nearly always read to music, though. i guess it's not so hard to parse information when you do it a lot.

One band who happens to do math rock that makes a good song .. I don't know if that could be called a resurgence. Anyway, they're technically great musicians and the song is very well made. There's an obvious hiphop influence and their blend of genres brings something new to the table. The guitar riffs are especially good. I don't understand your complaints about the drummer, his timing and high hat work is impeccable.

i didn't complain about the drummer's playing. i asked why they had produced his drums in that way. it sounds rubbish and, yes, like a fusion with david guetta or EDM or something. drums sound fucking awesome! if you have a beast of a drum player, why would you make him sound like he's playing horrible EDM laptop drums? stylistic choice, clearly -- and one that is the suck.

these are the best-sounding recorded drums i have ever heard. talk talk spent so long in the studio perfecting the sound of everything, almost monomaniacal about it. there is so much air and texture in them.

I mean that's true but listen to the song again and imagine that crisp sound instead of the drums it has. I think it would actually detract from the overall sound. The way they've incorporated them here is, to me, the best way.

I've been listening to a lot of '80s pop lately. Madonna, George Michael, Billy Idol, Cyndi Lauper, etc.

I also set up my PC after it sat in boxes for about 4 years. It fired right up. Pretty surprising

the part in the avalanches video is a homage to david berman. he killed himself like a year ago immediately after releasing that purple mountains album.

he was the founder and main member of the silver jews, one of the most critically acclaimed indie bands of the last generation. a ‘songwriter’s songwriter’ kind of thing.

the avalanches’ produce via sampling. that’s how they got famous. like dj shadow, who i mentioned in the same breath as them earlier. sampling is taking and repurposing someone else’s work in a creative (or subversive) new way. that’s their whole method. of course they make homages to the acts that have inspired them: the avalanches are basically headsy, record-digging collage-makers.

i listened to the silver jews all through college. that purple mountains album is superb. i actually didn’t know about either of those two songs above that pay credit to david berman. it doesn’t surprise me though. hundreds of band’s paid their respects and cited him as an influence.

the new calibre album is bloody great. legend in dnb.

and the remixes/reworks with god-tier mark ernestus are even better. given a deep berlin dub makeover.

Small indie shoegaze band that disappeared in 2014. I like when youtube gives me obscure stuff like this.

Youtube led to me to this obscure indie British band. Some of their music is fun.
