Larger electricity networks are created through the interconnection of local grids, which are linked for commercial and reliability purposes. At the highest level, the network covering the lower 48 states is comprised of three major interconnections EXIT, functioning predominantly independently of one another with limited exchanges of power between them.

Imagine freezing to death because your state thinks it is so important it should have its own grid.
Imagine using an emergency crisis as an opportunity to "own libs" instead of using your power and access to resources to help people.
LOL Pretty obvious some numbskull took an ideological position on not having liberal electricity in their beautiful self-reliant power network.

I did catch a snippet of an interview with some hillbilly, who seemed to be at a high level in the Texas govt.

"10% of our power network is solar and wind, this 100% outage proves we can't have either in our network"
"But what about the 90% of coal, oil and gas which also failed"
"Um er radical liberals, er, green new deal work of the antichrist, er, global warming is a myth, er."

This Texan fiasco is just another American farce in which actual people are dying. Republicans had their lies primed and ready to go.

That former mayor has the temerity to issue a declaration of "survival of the fittest," and then pleads with people to stop making mean comments? I look forward to seeing him refund all of his mayoral pay and go live off the grid in a log cabin. If he breaks his leg he can set it himself.

None of the conservatives I know had an answer for other failed elements in Texas power, so shifted their focus from ranting about wind power all day to grimly cursing the "responsible" engineers (for I guess being the only (/s) decision-making people in that chain).

Some of my conservative friends are in contracting, and often see engineers at their worst when called in to fix a problem caused by a misread of site plans, inaccurate plans, or ones that are just no longer in-date. It's probably easy for them to slip into the mode of blaming engineers even when surrounded by their own red tape and money obstacles.

Never discount the blue collar disdain for college learning.

Getting mistakes fixed, and yes engineers do make mistakes, is always a headache, many people prefer to bury it than lose face or spend a trivial fraction of the project cost on getting it right. Just fixing it and moving on is invariably the best outcome.

Half an engineer's work is getting things made according to the design, you're always up against the blue-collar "I've been doing X for 30 years, I'M going to tell YOU how its going to be done", well the world has moved on and the technology has changed and you've been doing it wrong for 30 years so, um, no, you won't.

Blue collar arrogance is an issue even when confined to blue collar circles." Guy has been doing x for 30 years, so doesn't want to do it the way the company does it, let alone under the command of someone in their 20s or 30s. Turns out he's actually been doing x wrong for 30 years even by the standards of 30 years ago, sorry to say."

I think engineers and field veterans can learn a lot from each other, and it's nice to see when they get along. I wish it happened more often. Sometimes the blue collar end of things has input on a specific site's quirks or the way a material ages that engineering hasn't taken into consideration.

Snowed again but was only two minutes late to work cause I took a side road which was so old and disused half of it didn't have snow on it.
Would have been on time if not for ppl going 30mph. It's really 40mph territory. I'm talking perfectly straight for miles

It's always amusing to me when politicians (especially those on the right) criticize the power saving rules our politicians here in California try to implement, but never talk about how power companies cut off power during fire season because it's cheaper than keeping their lines well-maintained. It's a great indicator to how full of shit they are.

Environmentalism is feminine. Real men burn fuel, wrap everything in factory farmed bacon, shoot animals for fun, and throw their beer cans and bottles on the ground of public parks.

Points if you don't immediately kill the animal, but toss it in the pile of the dead and dying like some hellish scene from The Prophecy.

Of both, I think blue collars have the hardest time accepting new info, especially ones that have been in the biz for a long time. The engineers can sometimes be snobbish, but to their credit when they're wrong they'll admit it.

City engineers can be another story entirely. You have to just about defend a thesis to get some to admit to a mistake on their part that could have cost a property owner tens of thousands of dollars, if not more. You'd think they'd be in a rush to reverse such an error while it's politely confined to an inner circle of workers, contractors, and themselves, but no.

The senator from Texas fleeing to Mexico when the storm hit isn't being covered at all by Brietbart. National Review covered it with one article. Comments on the site are supportive of Cruz's actions. Nice.

Further thinking it over...the whole republican response to this is funny. Ruby Red Texas power grid fails due to power management. It's the democrats fault though.

I've actually heard Cruz's flight from the state excused by the right as "lessening pressure on Texas resources." One family gone, huge impact. I guess that's also why I'm hearing that Ted's blaming his daughters for forcing him into it?

My usual start to work in winter was often:

Scrape ice off car

Start driving

Stop, rescrape ice off car, then wait for car to warm up like I should have at the beginning.
