Yes, we met on Valentines day morning. She gave me this giant white bear in a red bag that had chocolate in it also.

She also gave me a pair of $40 cufflinks and paid for breakfast. There is probably stuff I am forgetting about that was in the red bag too.

I think she had all of this stuff beforehand and it all got dropped on me. No other explanation how you can match with a guy on Saturday night and have a Valentines package all already by Sunday morning.

of course he's google translating. korean is a language isolate: unless you have some specific interest in or experience of the country, there is literally zero benefit to learning their alphabet or language.

I've mentioned before that I think it would be fun to know for shopping around Koreatown (also practical, as some imports don't have English labeling). Previously my only contact with it was through extended family or tkd.

it's a lot of effort just to buy some kimchi every now and then. plus a lot of korean food packaging will have an english label.

always encourage learning another language in general, though. one of the biggest shame points for native english speakers, generally, i feel. puts us as a cognitive and intellectual disadvantage to polyglots.

I shop at Korean stores at least a third as much as supermarkets or small grocers (you'd have to be crazy or loaded to buy a packet of nori at Safeway when you know you can get a case of it for the same price elsewhere). A lot of packaging does have English, but a lot doesn't. So there is at least some small element of practicality to the fun of learning it. Definitely come more in handy for me than German, though I could practice that as well at a bakery I frequent.

It's a lot of effort grinding out tech trees and levels in video games too, and doesn't really feel as rewarding as expanding languages. Admittedly a small sample, but I've gotten nothing but positive receptions from native speakers when working on pronunciations over discord/etc. (french, german, russian come to mind). Contrast to the negativity (and I know it isn't all like that, it's just my ratio of experiences) from native English speakers directed at people learning our language.

Anyway, my bigger priority right now than starting an Asian language is patching my rusty high school Spanish to a once more speakable level. I can't imagine how I actually sound at it right now but it can't be good.

one of the major reasons i stopped learning new computer games was because i started translating the time spent/invested into terms of actual life skills, just like learning a new language. back when everyone was crazy about starcraft 2 or dota 2 all i could think was 'a game with 90 heroes and endless builds and items? that's a new language right there'. feelings of guilt and disgust quickly follow.

i quite like learning new languages, even to conversational level. it's easy to feel embarrassed or frustated; but more often it's just fun to be so goofy and dumb at something. like a baby. it's humbling and also stretches your mind to a new dimension. enter oliver wendell holmes quotation.
