It's literally everywhere here, even on tools. Just because we're also running Fred Flinstone doesn't mean metric isn't in use as well.

Also I don't begrudge competitive shooters special gear. Obviously there's still skill involved even if you have special jackets and kneepads. It's just not for me, nor apparently the sheriff/redneck hangouts I've practiced at.

Well its specialist and its evolved to the point of insanity in rifle.

Although I still have my fullbore rifle jacket, not that I really got into that.

Rifles are such a rabbit hole of a hobby. Back when I was in contact with one Canadian buddy he was asking me for advice on rifles (I was at like low-middle stage, probably the wrong person to ask), and like a year later he was spewing technobabble and posting pics of coins he shot at some absurd distance.

Meanwhile I had a .22 I don't even remember the brand of, as well as the needs-TLC SKS I haven't shot in well over a decade. They haven't seen the outside of the safe in forever long. Could easily Marie Kondo those to a gun pawn but they're almost heirlooms at this point.

In rifle shooting at the top level your results are limited by the quality of your rifle.
Which is to say to be competitive you do need the latest best quality most expensive rifle and to change the barrel as soon as it goes off.

Its still fun if you don't care too much, and can be a colossal waste of time and money if you can't shoot or read range and wind.

I'm happy with my current level. I won't be winning any competitions, but I'd rather improve at bow, since I enjoy that more.

If it was a video game I'd have everything maxed by now.

I had a Walther KK for a while, 3 position is flipping hard, I think I gave it away.

Come to think of it I think mine is a bog-standard Ruger 10/22. Perfectly satisfactory plinker even if there are jams.

Also, why:

Why not?

If I run out of things to do I may have a go at long range rifle shooting, I think an M700 with an Accuracy International chassis would be the way to do it, and relatively cost effective.

I would like to see your SKS, newbie. The SKS is one of two rifles I would get if NJ wasn't so serious about gun control.

There's nothing particularly special about it. Wood and bayonet, pretty much like any google image results you'd find. I'll try and remember to grab a photo though. The gun safe is like its sarcophagus and it almost feels like robbing a grave taking it out, lol.

Are they well oiled? You can get oil emitter paper and/or packs.

Probably could use a once-over. I haven't maintained them in a long time, but they don't get dusty sealed away so I've got that going for me. My "home defense" workhorse is a shotgun that would probably work after a year submerged in the Puget Sound.

I think I've learned the hard way, scrubbing with a bronze brush and solvent containing ammonia then not swabbing it out thoroughly can leave copper ammonia compounds which can corrode the barrel if left in. It does need to be clean straight oil.
Or maybe the AK47 barrel on my russian match revolver wasn't great quality to start with. And I think it was used once then put in a safe for 30 years before I got it.

It's kind of in the directions for ammonia solvents.

It is but there are a good few solvents which aren't marketed as ammonia solvents but still have small amounts.
eg https://www.hoppes.com/traditional-hopp … O-904.html

A strong rust inhibitor, it protects your firearms from costly corrosion damage and aids in cleaning and preventing carbon and lead build-up in barrels to maintain top accuracy.
Not if you have some copper in the bore or you use a bronze brush as it does have some ammonia compounds in it.

I have mentioned that i'm in the market for a new car. I was eyeballing a Suburu Forester or Outback, but one of my aunt's wants to get rid of her car and she's trying to sell it for like $10k lower than it's worth, so I might buy it.

One problem - I wanted a larger, SUV or wagon-type car so I could haul gear and go off paved roads for camping/hiking.

It's a 2015 Infiniti Q70 AWD with 25k miles. I'm very 'meh' about cars in general, but it's a nice car with a fair amount of luxury, and she's rich so i know it was well taken care of and barely driven. Hmmmm

Are you going to go camping every weekend that you need a SUV? You live in California. Don't they kill you with gas taxes? The state will probably add a registration renewal tax on SUVs at some point. Get the Infiniti.

I go at least once a quarter and would like to eventually do an extended road trip.

I'm leaning towards just buying the Infiniti though.

Next question- would it be bad if I flipped it within a year and made money on it?

Yes, it would be bad if you profited off a deal that your aunt could profit off of now even if she is rich.

I doubt it. She said the dealership is offering her $16k and its worth about $27k. She would rather sell it to me at that price than the dealer, and she won't list it on her own.

I will pass on the good vibes by giving my deadbeat brother my old car. It's a 2013 Corolla with ~90k miles. It's still good for another 5 years at least until it needs major repairs.

So keep it a year or two and go from there, sounds like your aunt won't complain.

Looking into the future I can see my sister giving selling for the trade-in price her deadbeat brother her Subaru when she trades up to electric.
But I don't really want the current large Forester so it may get traded for a Liberty, Outback or Impreza.

Finally bought an MTB - Scott Aspect 950 2020

https://mk0bikesocietyop74ul.kinstacdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/2020-Scott-Aspect-950.png

27 Gears, similar gearing to my last bike, I know its a budget bike but its going to be for gentle trails, if I want I can upgrade the brakes and forks and it'll be on a par with 'better' bikes which don't have the gearing I want so this is my best option.

Made in China unfortunately, but I'm guessing the Chinese content is <$100 and there was nothing else which matched so well except a GT and I don't want a GT.

Erm yeah, they didn't have one on the floor, the guy did say "Uh you know its a pretty bright blue, we'd better get one out of the box so you can have a look at it"

I hate having to go down the rabbit-hole of online reviews - "THE FORKS ARE RUBBISH THE FRAME IS RUBBISH THE TYRES ARE RUBBISH THE BRAKES ARE RUBBISH BUY A $15,000 EXTREMEHARDMAXSTUMPJUMPERCOMP OR BUY NOTHING"
