i'm definitely up for re-creating some end of the cold war-style making out.

on the condition that you accompany me to a basement nightclub in berlin. it'll be just like in wim wenders' 'wings of desire'!

Do not recommend. Russia is full of radioactive bears, questionable doctor's sausage (is that dyed with beet juice or antifreeze?), and My Little Pony carnivals. Dilbert might enjoy it, but Uzique would end up leaving such a place with a brand new set of Adidas.

realistically russia and china are near the very bottom of my list of countries to ever visit. i'd rather go to some central american murder-hole or a take my chances with the vaqueros of the high pampas. at least there's pure cocaine and beautiful women to accompany the ever-present, thrilling risk of death. russia just has stooped over babushkas and china is like life in permanent greyscale.

They're not all stooped babushkas. Some of them are hulking dead lifters named Nataliya or something to that effect. They would literally wear you like a scarf.

I think as long as you stick to the usual tourist destinations, Central American countries are probably fine to visit. If you're backpacking, why would you even be in one of the capital cities. Also things like dental/medical tourism are popular south of the border for US citizens because the costs here are too damn high.

As an American living in America, being warned about occasional shootings down there isn't exactly impactful. On the other hand, some of the critters living down there are ten pounds of nope in a five pound bag.

I'd say the most dangerous countries I visited would be south africa and brazil. SA because you can just see the hatred in people's eyes, Brazil because in some spots violence/robberies are the norm - and you can walk into them without realising.

Still, my experience in both countries has been overwhelmingly positive. And a lot of places in South America and Africa are perfectly fine & well worth a visit.

er most of the countries with the highest murder rate in the world are in central america?

1     El Salvador     61.80     2017
2     Jamaica     57.00     2017
3     Venezuela     56.30     2016
4     Honduras     41.70     2017
5     Lesotho     41.20     2015
6     Belize     37.90     2017
7     St. Vincent and the Grenadines     36.50     2016
8     South Africa     35.90     2017
9     St. Kitts and Nevis     34.20     2012
10     Trinidad and Tobago     30.90     2015
10     The Bahamas     30.90     2017
12     Brazil     30.50     2017
13     St. Lucia     29.60     2017

19     Tuvalu     18.60     2012
20     Puerto Rico     18.50     2017

it was a joke, in any case. though i'd also stereotype brazil as 'dangerous', for the sake of the joke i already covered south america in my 'cocaine' comment (next you'll tell me not all of south america is involved in the production and consumption of cocaine: wow! CIA fact book larssen!)

love that you come in, totally stony-faced, ignore the joke and proceed to say 'now BRAZIL is dangerous', despite it being below about 6 central american states in the murder statistics. what a fucking fail lmao.

i haven't been to south america, asia (which is a big omission at this point), or australasia. discussed this here before.

been to quite a lot of north america, africa (including SA, several times), and of course all over europe.

so you've been to china and brazil and i haven't. wow. i've read the world's great works of literature, consumed the history of film, indulged in the canon of classical and contemporary musics, can hold my knife and fork properly and hold forth in witty repartee with art collectors and part-time superheroes, and am evidently more cultured than you in just about every way. maybe you should stay home and refine yourself a bit, you vulgar pleb?

all jokes aside i'd absolutely like to travel more (to have travelled more). for complex and unenjoyable reasons i haven't been able to get away very much in my 20s.

but i stick by my facetious comment that russia, china, and vast amounts of chart-toppingly dangerous central and south america are not very high on my list.

Not to belabor a point, but from what I've read a lot of the crime in some of those countries seems focused in the capital cities, and sometimes in specific districts. You're probably safer in the tourist towns or districts than you are in some areas of the US or UK. I wouldn't trust to my complete safety getting blasted at a club and stumbling back to my house in my own town.

That isn't to say that violence isn't still a Central American problem. The people are still feeling the aftershocks of the Central American Crisis. But like 10 million people tour there yearly.

I haven't been myself, but that doesn't really prove or disprove anything.

Costa Rica and Panama are safe, and wealthy places. GDP per capita like 4 times as high as neighboring central American countries which is crazy. Both places are pretty good for retired Americans. There is no reason to visit Nicaragua, Honduras, Belize, and Guatemala though.

i'm still amused that my joke was taken totally literally and at flat face-value, and yet we get this about south africa:

SA because you can just see the hatred in people's eyes
because every single person there is still burning with hatred from apartheid

So I bought like $400 worth of premium porn subscriptions. I still have so much space to fill up though. Very bad situation.

In a FWP of FWPs, my parents' cat supposedly had its TV privileges revoked today. Apparently kept pawing at the birds on the screen and acking its head off.

Probably a pretty distracting thing for a work-at-home environment.

Googled "Man of the house" in order to do some research on adulting. I was looking for some older guy to give me advice to become the man I was always meant to be. Not next year. Not tomorrow. Now.
https://i.pinimg.com/originals/75/1a/a2/751aa27868b27377495e09df4d604208.jpg
So the first and only results from that Google search were old bad movies titled "Man of the House".

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/89/Man_Of_The_House_1995.jpg
So I Googled "man of the house advice" And Google then decided to give me nothing but cheat codes and walkthroughs for an adult of dating game titled "man of the house"

At this point I just gave up. First World Problem: society rather sell me digital goods than have me become the man I was always meant to be.

I think it's super-dated. Gendered terms by and far don't bother me, but that one just exudes an obnoxious aura sometimes. Perfect picture of a GG dad telling his 9-year-old boomer that he's the man of the house while pa's away at work. "Look after your sister" (who's in high school, and probably doomed to a life of being asked "is your husband in, ma'am?").

I don't really like or dislike any generation. It's more of an on an individual basis. But I do recognize certain trends, attitudes, and various pros and cons.

One criticism is that some of the greatest generation thought that nobody could ever have it as bad as they did, so hung boomer children out to dry. Homeless, living out of cars and if they were lucky, motel rooms. Sometimes they played favorites. Help one kid's out with down payments. The other? On their own. Some boomers regard the GG with as much (if not more) spite as millennials and on do boomers. Frequently, "my parents bought a house on a job and a handshake." Now it's "my parents bought their (first) house for only $30,000."

Obviously the reality is more complicated than any one anecdote, but you can see this kind of history repeat itself.

Cats need to get their murder out or they get neurotic, can't you get the cat a laptop or an ipad?
There are tons of cat games for the ipad.
A grape will keep my cat amused for hours.

I'll make someone else's cat a toy, but I'm not buying it a touchscreen.

It's a known danger to dogs, but safety is still up in the air with grapes and cats. Still, having smashed grapes around the house rotting under furniture is gross. Might I suggest pecans in the shell? In my experience a pretty irresistible size for a cat.

Other successful makeshift toys include amazon box with random holes cut out the side and top, and a loop of zip ties attached to a craft paper string. Paper helicopters last all of five minutes before destroyed.
