I reckon his alien film is probably the most influential thing he's created, even more so than blade runner. Its legacy in the horror genre, the character types (esp ripley) and the franchise it spawned are still popularly referenced today. That film and blade runner together really cemented him in the filmmaking & scifi genres. If you contrast these movies and gladiator or thelma & louise you also see he has a very wide creative range.

I don't know if it's fair to with the benefit of hindsight say that blade runner is overrated, it's still a beautiful movie and for the time it was groundbreaking.

As to the influence of the director on the film; it's true that in mega productions that is muted, but at the end of the day he's responsible for assembling the team and executing a vision. Choosing the right people for your set design, cinematography, editing, costumes, is an integral part of the job where many directors fall short.

Edit: posted in wrong thread
i could credit this more if he didn't just rinse the alien universe into a sham franchise on the order of the dumb campy predator movies. (predator 1 was a very well-directed and workmanlike bit of film-making, too.) all the recent alien-universe movies like prometheus are beneath comment. serious mock-profound dumb dumb bad films.

the original alien movie is great but the whole universe was propped up by a lot more writers/artists than ridley scott alone. giger crops up in that jodorowsky dune movie i referenced above, by the way, if you're into that sort of thing.

I watched the Chris Watts documentary on youtube that I think newbie watched also. I don't know what to rate it but it was interesting. I already saw the confession/polygraph videos beforehand. Really strange that the murder victim was an aspiring social media influencer and narrated her own murder documentary.

Inherent Vice 8/10,

movie isn't for everyone but I liked this weird stuff.

The movie is based off of a Pynchon novel

lol at pointing out that a movie called 'inherent vice' is based on a pynchon novel. it's kind of in the name.

'gravity's rainbow', the hit adaptation based on a novel, by thomas pynchon, 'gravity's rainbow'.

i actually didn't like that movie very much, and i've read almost all of his stuff. i don't think pynchon is very adaptable for film. his writing is incredibly slippery and demented.

I read half way through Gravity's Rainbow. Didn't care for it too much. I think all of the poop play was the thing that finally made me quit.

uncontroversial and tepid take but 'the crying of lot 49' is far and away his most accessible and enjoyable work.

I finally saw Tenet and it's actually very good. The concept is great but because some story elements/dialogue is ridiculous, 7,5/10. Nonetheless the time mindfuck requires quite some decyphering and paying attention.

I like Solo a lot too. It's only crime was that Harrison Ford couldn't be Han.

Was decidedly meh. Spry Pesci and DeNiro were way too distracting. Didn't like the pacing of the movie much.

Did I mention I watched Uncut Gems? Did not like at all. Thought the cinematography suffered because they were too concerned with conveying the frantic, slipping into despair journey of the main character. Sacrificed plot development for cheap goon violence and Kevin Garrett. That being said, I thought the ending was well done for the story.

The Irishman is fake news anyway. I mean the guy the movie is about is a notorious liar. It's all fake news.

Having not watched it I gave it a 4.5/10, apparently the de-aging effects were weird the actors were too old.

the de-aging was fine. what technology can't change is the way old actors move and use their bodies.

nothing original or really that deep. watch 'la jetée' (1962).

what i find amazing about christopher nolan is that he has been making movies about the same formal conceit for an entire career. and it's stuff that's taught in film school 101 (as well as composition and creative writing). in russian formalist terms, it's called the fabula/syuzhet. the story and the way it's plotted/told.

it was novel and well-done in memento, i'll give him that.

The Phantom Menace, 7/10
It has it's issues but I like it mostly.
Tatooine did not need to happen and is like a B movie, with a really expensive race
Podrace and Duel of Fates were the best parts, but both had bad moments, podrace had a fart scene, duel the deaths were bad
Love the aesthetic of the prequels, the sounds, and the music
Dialogue and writing....ehhhh
Droid CGI aged ok, other bits didn't especially lighting and greenscreens
I hate the Naboo battlefield. It's got 5 colors. Green, brown, tan, purple laser balls, red lasers

I love this scene

Hindsight Jar Jar Binks is the best part of the prequels. Has any other character in the franchise inspired as much speculation and conspiracy theorization? There are breakdowns all over the place about ideas he planted, of things he bumbled into that couldn't just be coincidence, and moves he pulled off in fights that are supernatural. It's really a pity they appeared to cave to toxic fans and didn't give him a reason.

Right? Though I did actually listen to most of it while doing chores. I already knew it was bad, but the arguments here expanded on that.

tl;dr it took everything that made cats remotely work as a show and either deleted it or made it worse.

I'm sure I'll get roped into watching it at some point (please no), so it's nice to have this out of the way.

Why would someone spend time doing that, when they could create something themselves, oh wait.

The music is fine, the performances good to great.

The only problem with Cats was the lack of exposition at the beginning for people ignorant of Cats, which lets face it is most people.

The video does a good job outlining and identifying the things Cats 19 broke that made the production somewhat work as a musical and a very loose story in the first place. Song delivery (and the weird choreography that went with it) was merely one aspect. Exposition wasn't 19's unique flaw. Cats never did have a whole lot of exposition to begin with.

But of course you don't care about any of that, we all know you were just in it for CGI catgirl pinups.
