I used to rock a full tower with a custom water loop (there's even pictures buried somewhere deep in this forum). The tower was steel and weighed more than me. It didn't bother me but it did eventually get in the way.

Since then I've been rocking much more modest mid-towers. The problem I find nowadays is everything is already built into the MB so there's no reason to have more than 1 expansion slot for your video card. Take all that extra space, rearrange some of the other components (like power supply) and you can fit the same amount of stuff into a much smaller space. Enter ITX cases.

I also keep my box on my desk so space is at a premium.

If Creative Labs weren't such buttheads about stuff I might have kept installing their newer cards. If anything, I'd pick up an stx ii. But there are better external options that won't make you dig out your mb manual to figure out in what unique, special way it handles pcie lanes.

PSU fan on my modular small form factor (SFX) silverstone is on the way out. it has lasted < 12 months. really not happy to draw the short straw here. RMA process takes ~ 28 days. so that's a month without a PC i haven't even had for a year.

the irony is not lost on me that i forked out exorbitant amounts for fancy fans (which are indeed silent), and now the bearing in my fucking PSU fan starts to make my PC sound like a hamster on a wheel 24/7. the only fan i can't really take apart and replace myself, not fancying lethal amounts of electricity passing through my body for the sake of a £2.50 bearing.

drop is a very well-known website. it used to be called mass drop. if you want keyboards, headphones, amplifiers, or just about anything that typically has a subreddit full of nerds fawning over it, then it'll be on mass drop. they team up with legendary brands and manufacturers to produce OEMs direct from their factory. as a result, you can get top-end gear for wholesale prices.

i don't know why you have to sign up to the website to see the deal. the IEMs are $200, right inside newbie's budget. they're some of the best earphones you'll get for under $500. they're very good and not widely available.

I bought an ultralight backpacking tent from Drop. Designed by a well-known thru-hiker and product designer. The website is exactly as you describe. The website is solid and offers deep discounts on well-regarded products

I may actually pull the trigger on those Bought. Way cheaper than I've seen them for.

i would really get a pair for myself if drop didn't have +£75 customs charges. us britishers and europeeens are left waiting for drop stuff to wash-up on ebay, normally.

if you can abide the aesthetics, the moondrop blessing 2's are also pretty good in the sub-$300 market.

https://shenzhenaudio.com/products/moon … r-earphone

moondrop are pretty much the vanguard brand in the 'chi-fi' phenomenon. a lot of audio companies in and around shenzhen who are catching up fast on the tuning and balance of well-established western brands (e.g. sennheiser, shure).

the best 'kilobuck' purchase in the sub-$1000 market is probably from a small american company, campfire audio.
https://campfireaudio.com/shop/andromeda-2020/

there are some truly insane IEMs in the $1500-3000 bracket but i'm not going there. moondrop, above, have a flagship pair around $750 which are broadly competitive with them.

Please let me know if you can find a RTX 3080 at MSRP. It is supposed to be more that twice as powerful as what I have right meow.

Amazon has listing in the $1500 range. No way in hell I am going to pay that even if I need this in my life.

yep, everybody is scalping and price gouging the latest GPUs like crazy. i honestly have no idea why (other than perhaps a leftover gold rush mentality from crypto currencies; but haven't they moved on to highly specialized cores yet?).

why do you want it is a better question? you've spoken extensively about your disappointment and under-utilization of the build you put together last year. hell, i've only used mine that i made at the same time for 2-3 current gen games. none of them were worth a $750 graphics card.

i'd like to play RDR2 on the very maxed-out ultra settings, top aliasing, etc, on my ultra-widescreen monitor. it would be neat. but my overclocked 5700XT can do that right now on a mix of ultra and very high, and modest aliasing settings. i'd like to play cyberpunk or some other current-gen game and to see what the maturing take on ray-tracing really is all about.

but are either of those things worth $750? we're talking maybe 100 hours of gameplay, tops. i say no.

I yadda yadda'd in the other thread about my GPU woos. The setup I have actually puts the GPU to work. I am hoping maybe the whole thing was just an issue with old drivers that I updated just now though.

Bitcoin is currently worth $32,000. In the time of global pandemic and unlimited corporate bailouts what is the safest investment option around? Internet money.

i spent so much bitcoin back in the day that it hurts to think about. dauntless still has some, i think.

anyway. you can fix your GPU woes handsomely with a GPU and a top-quality PSU for long-term peace of mind. i thought long-term viability was your thought procese behind half of your PC anyway. your current CPU and motherboard are not being stretched. it sounds like your system doesn't have enough power under load, which would make sense considering you have a monster CPU, a large GPU, and about 8 SATA drives full of asa akira porn all drawing power from a very modest PSU.

My PSU isn't modest.

I am wondering if I just had a driver issue earlier though. My GPU seems to be doing better than before in task manager.

650W is really 'modest' when you're putting together machines with 8 or 12 cores, intending to overclock, and also intending to game with multiple 4K displays and therefore large GPUs. 650 is really pushing it. i had a 1000W PSU in my last hardcore gamer build (i know CPUs and GPUs have become more efficient since then, but still).

I built the computer before I built the setup I have now. Look at the purchase date: April. If I knew this is how this all would continue, I would have went with a much higher watt PSU. I guess I could just yank the 650w PSU with a bigger one but I am just nervous as to whether it would physically fit in the midtower I have.

Still this is all just speculating. The GPU isn't going to become available/reasonable anytime soon.

you can get small form factor PSUs at a pinch, ones for mini and micro-ATX, all the way up to 1000W. size isn't an issue.

i would serious speculate some more on why you'd want to throw away a $1500 computer in order to build another $1500 computer plus a $750 graphics card. for what? crusader kings III don't have ray-tracing bro !

This all very true. I guess I just got annoyed by the blue screen during work. Hopefully the driver update fixed the issue. I will still continue to be angry at bitcoin and GPU price gouging though.

I'll add that generally you're safe with a PSU that meets the recommendations of one of the many wattage calculators (who don't like to underrecommend) out there. I usually toss on a few extra for possible overclocks and additional storage. The thing to spend most of your time looking for are definitely quality builds and components.

For recommends, I like to start by looking for Seasonics and failing that, PSUs manufactured by Seasonic and rebranded Corsair, etc. Look for things like coil whine complaints (been an off and on thing for seasonic sadly), faulty return complaints, and generally keep in mind that within one seller, some models are good, some are bad. More common knowledge stuff for builders than revealing info, though.

I guess bequiet has a 1500W psu now for the big time tower builds? CWT as the mfg seems like a bit of an "average" choice, but I haven't seen any of the tests.

2070 super definitely ready to play some ray tracing, but details will still be down due to cpu/ram bottleneck. Keeping my pattern, won't upgrade to the 30x0 series probably. Maybe not even 40x0 if there's nothing I want to play.

My experience has been the opposite. SFX PS's go up to about 600, readily available. And max I can find is 800w and those come with terrible reviews and out-of-stock warnings across the board.

I'm looking for a ~800w SFX or SFX-L power supply but not had luck.

I can google and find companies stating they have 800w or 850w PS's ready to release eventually but nothing actually available.

I checked out that Drop site discussed above. Some really nice things there. Hilarious that there's a hobby market venn diagram overlap between mechanical keyboards and headphones. I think there's a lot to unpack there. I mean, I'm in that section of the diagram myself...but man, it's never been presented to me so starkly.
