Win 10 seems to work OK on my old conventional HD machine, so far.

I think Pro gives more control and less automated fuck ups than the home version.

I did check and my Dell was supposedly fully compatible and supported with drivers before I started.

Fairly common issue reported by technicians. I've had to work with a number of Windows 10 machines, including newer ones at factory settings, that were going through this. Also became a problem in my desktop for awhile. Sometimes occurs after a Windows 10 update, despite the fact that running update is one of the recommended methods to fix it.

Windows 10 initiated an update 40 minutes before my zoom meeting. It seems to be one of those big ones that break everything since it has been 10 minutes and is only 22% and stuck. "This will take awhile" it says in a totally different screen than usual updates.

Follow up: It reset my file associations. I have to set videos to not use Window 10 video player. I'm not even sure why that exist since we already have Windows Media Player.

You can configure Outlook to fetch emails from anyone source. Setting it up manually is a bit annoying since the auto setup doesn't work well.

Why did they make Paint 3D if Paint already exist?

You need to pay for Outlook/Office, the email app is free

They were going to remove Paint at one point but then changed their mind, Microsoft are good at changing their minds and renaming their products a lot

I guess the update was also something big for edge. It gave it a new icon and everything. Still not using, though. I don't particularly want my browser synced with my Office account and greeting me by name like the HAL 9000 every time I start it up.

Thankfully we can skip the Microsoft account sign-in, not so with Apple.

I had to install a printer so I can scan work documents. I was annoyed at first when HP's website sent to the Microsoft store to download the software/drivers. I was pleasantly surprised when the MS Store told me I already had the HP Printer Software installed. I guess Win 10 bundles HP Printer stuff with your install and doesn't tell you. That seems like a failure on their part to communicate that being able to easily set up a printer is part of their software bloat and mandatory updates.

there's probably things you can do to remove things like drivers-in-waiting that you'll never use. i doubt they do much more than take up storage space.

After a long update and slow restart I too have meet now.
I really try to avoid unnecessary software on my machine, thanks Microsoft.

It hasn't been the best year for Windows 10, has it. Apparently they've known the severity of some of the flaws, yet shotgun the updates to their users anyway. Even with the control afforded by Pro editions, I guess stuff has still slipped through.

Ran into more trouble today, but this time in the form of a steam update that broke voice chat for some users. Bit of an issue since there are people on my list who just won't use discord or any of the other alternatives, and it either closes a call attempt outright or sticks me in a reconnecting attempt infinite loop on a voice chat channel. Works everywhere else.

found thread:
https://steamcommunity.com/discussions/ … 724539129/

Restarting my computer to deal with the ssd issues probably triggered the steam update (which messed up voice for some users prior). While working on a solution before realizing what had happened with steam, I ended up having to retrace my steps to get my ssd visibility back again.

Maybe I'll buy more switch games.

we moved to ltsc in a company i admin for to avoid that^ shit. yes, i know, it has limitations and compatibility issues, but once those are figured out and workarounds found, in our exoerience it's a solid choice for those who don't want to struggle with microsoft not giving a damn. migrated our 1.2k+ machines to it over the last year, no major issues yet.

Had my PC plugged into a power strip for a second while rearranging my desk to fit the UPS. Of course the power goes out at that moment. I then got to enjoy the following issue and its troubleshooting process:

found solutions involving enabling ahci in bios. ahci was enabled, so:
1) boot unsuccessful in normal mode (blue screen with boot drive error)
2) drive visible in bios, but primary boot drive strangely set to large program ssd. fixed
3) boot unsuccessful in normal mode with same error; set to safe mode in troubleshooting options, restart:
- ahci boot successful in safe mode
- restart, enter bios, switch to ide mode in sata settings, save and exit
- ide boot successful to normal mode
- facepalm
- admin command prompt: bcdedit /set {current} safeboot minimal (safe mode trigger)
- restart, enter bios, switch back to ahci mode in sata settings, save and exit
- ahci boot successful to safe mode
- admin command prompt: bcdedit /deletevalue {current} safeboot (removes safe mode trigger)
- restart, ahci boot successful in normal mode
- browser tabs all gone, like 90% half-finished youtube videos that I was definitely going to get to #reeee

Doesn't really feel like a Windows 10 problem so much as a me problem for having an improper shutdown. But it's weird to me that the solution to a problem I found written about very early in Win 10's life is still relevant.

I would be strongly tempted to move my company to Linux if users wouldn't completely lose their #*&.

LTSC sounds appealing

Screensaver doesn't work after latest Win 10 update.
Seems to be a common issue, seems like it should be a simple thing they shouldn't fuck up.

~30 years into Windows and some Xboxes in, but Microsoft still can't bounce a bunch of poker cards. Sad!

Yes, if they don't want their screen on when they're not using it.

Also my screen had compatibility issues with my last graphics card, it was a pain to get out of sleep mode and the on screen control card the 'multifunction joystick' connected with failed multiple times.
Screens don't need joysticks, they need buttons.

no. just no. linux is a specialist platform which can only be used as a desktop os in very application restricted environments. it can't really stand against windows as "swiss knife" type of os atm.

My users mainly type, email, and do accounts. But some of them are aging, have already learned Windows, or don't want to learn something new like Linux (even Mint) or Mac. The worst ones are those who have some basic knowhow and try to fix things on their own. "Can I have the password?" "OK, what do you need to do?" "Bluster bluster sigh." Switching over is a pipe dream that would just generate a headache number of tickets.

I can get WinApps working with Office just fine, I think. Nobody does anything that specifically needs Windows to run it. The limitation is user-based.

"atm," Windows is a "swiss knife" with a hidden, randomized button that will shoot poisoned darts into your eyeballs. While 10 runs OK usually, MS's strange update policies and careless attitude towards users are absolutely not worth defending.

No need to be emphatic, I'd already dismissed the idea when I made the post.

Definitely still has a place in a setting where sensitive data might be visible if you forget to manually sign off.

e: i should add that folding@home has a screensaver.
