so the UK government has massively mishandled covid-19 and xmas.
5 days ago: boris johnson says it would-be 'inhumane' to ban christmas. people are out and about in london, doing xmas shopping.
2 days ago: boris johnson abruptly cancels christmas gatherings. right about around closing time on the last day of christmas shopping ... hmm.
apparently we now have a 'super covid' that is 'totally out of control'. neat. it's not the government's fault, no: out of the 300+ mutations of covid on the planet at present, london just has the horror movie version. yep, that's totally it. increased transmission in the last few weeks aren't because of londoners milling about preparing for xmas: it's because we have an uncontrollable nightmare plague.
now the world are rushing to ban travel to and from the UK. all of europe banned travel immediately. then colombia, israel, saudi arabia, turkey, canada ...
it's completely hysterical. our own government are now stoking fear and hysteria in order to save face.
complete and utter fucking shambles.

Not sure how its been deduced this strain is more contagious, I think in multiple places people can see the vaccine coming and have dropped their guard, like jumping out of the lifeboat when there's a ship on the horizon.
If it is a new more contagious strain then the mistake was not putting the brakes on hard much earlier, if the virus is swilling around in hundreds of thousands of people its inevitable it will mutate rapidly, more so than if it were in a few bats or a test tube in China.

there's about 300 active mutations at the moment iirc. there hasn't been anywhere near enough data or lab work done to attribute the rise in infections in london/the south-east with a 'spike mutation' or anything virological: it's just as likely due to behavioural changes and, as you say, relaxed distancing measures. people have been encouraged to look forward to xmas, albeit a modestly downscaled one.
instead the torys have slammed on the handbrake and pulled a u-turn at the very last minute, cancelling and trying to make illegal even people leaving london for Christmas. st. pancras station looked like the last airlift out of saigon on saturday night. the government are literally creating super-spreader events rather than handling things in a responsible, thought-out manner.
i know people who have been stranded in london over xmas now, unable to visit relatives in europe as planned, probably unable to get a refund for flights, and now totally alone. if the government had just said way back in november that christmas gatherings and celebrations this year were on pause, and we'd get a bank holiday in august or something, i don't think many people would care. instead they insisted on 'individual responsibility' and 'xmas cheer' for weeks ... and now a sudden u-turn.
as usual, no ministers will do anything even like an imitation of responsibility. no resignations, no contrite apologies. they're all pretending they've been caught off guard by a resident evil strain instead.
it's piteously mediocre.
do i even have to mention the sheer chaos caused to food and logistics by this? france have just suddenly stopped all freight to and from the UK. 3 days before christmas. there's sheer chaos.

Is the BoJo government really just another tabloid? Calling it "super covid" seems pretty irresponsible and misleading on the their part. Stuff that would be in a headline but in none of what a quoted researcher was talking about. Afaik the mutations (scary language to Joe Average) that are occurring are currently not having an appreciable effect on transmissibility.

george soros and evil capitalists don't appoint our cabinet ministers. they are supposed to be publicly accountable and held to rules, formal and informal, of propriety. this arrangement has worked well for literally centuries, through many generations of stable, successive governments. cabinet ministers resign and admit that they have 'lost control of their brief' when things go wrong on their watch. better, more capable appointees take on the role.
