there’s no reason for an economy to rely on undocumented labour?

What a well thought-out argument.

The better countries look after their citizens standard of living by keeping illegal migrant workers out.
The shitbag ones, America and the UK, don't care so much.

every country has a large grey economy. every major industry relies on migrant labour to some degree. wasnt i just talking here last month about how germany was rebuilt by turks and yugoslavs?

i’m sure australia has escaped capitalism.

Most developed countries only allow documented labour, I'm sure germany regularised the use of untermensch.

Meanwhile try surviving as an illegal worker in Japan, Singapore, Canada or Australia even.
They aren't part of the workforce in the way they are in California or Texas.

but your problem isn't with them being documented or undocumented, is it? my point was you seem to have a problem with brown or non-white people in 'your' country, period.

was the indian taxi driver documented?

Anyone working as a taxi driver is 99% likely to be documented in some form, in fact he was a student who would be entitled to work 20hrs/wk.
No-one gets a visa to work at a low level, although there are plenty of ruses, bogus colleges etc.

The problem is your idea that anyone who wants to live and work anywhere in the world should just be free to do so.

i didn’t say that at all. i said you don’t want to extend the same rationale that lets you work and move freely to other people. you’re very selectively protectionist and outright racist in most cases.

go read the post i responded to. you said you wanted people to stay in their own countries blah blah blah. why aren’t you in slough then?

Anyone else is free to use exactly the same rationale as me.

All they need is a degree, ten years work experience in their degree subject, a skill in demand, the ability to support themselves financially for at least two years with no income, more than functional english, have no criminal record or have ever been arrested for a serious crime, be in good health and be below certain age thresholds.

Its not rocket science.

Otherwise I think its best for cultures to no mix too much, it causes trouble.
Also letting barbaric cultures establish themselves in developed countries reverses progress and people don't like it. If they want to be backward and barbaric its best all round if they stay where they are.

so in other words, if you’re white, grew up in an english speaking country, and went to university, you can move anywhere you want. so, in other words, white privilege.

how any of those requirements are relevant for taxi drivers or food pickers or garment workers, i don’t know. 10 years of experience and a degree? yeah, that’s not how a huge segment of the economy and labour marketplace works. you don’t need excellent english to work on your hands and knees picking produce for 9 hours a day, either.

seems you’re a wee bit confused and just like to blast non-white people for being ‘where they shouldn’t be’. and obviously your representative middle-class white guy credentials should open doors for you everywhere.

Imagine being called barbaric by someone living in Australia. We all know what you did to those poor emus.

We have no shortage of taxi-drivers etc, hence we have no need to import any.

And if there's one thing the local Indians and Sikhs hate its having their wages diluted by immigrants.

You should look up David Foster Wallace's essay on his journey on John McCain's 2000 presidential campaign. DFW also had a good essay about his interview with a right wing radio host in the late 90's.

It's in this book
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consider_the_Lobster
The chapters are ""Up, Simba" (McCain chapter) and "Host".

Also is it okay to boil lobsters alive?

I'll take a look.

re: lobsters

Short article on that:

Scientists disagree over whether or not lobsters feel pain. Lobsters have a peripheral system like humans, but instead of a single brain, they possess segmented ganglia (nerve cluster). Because of these differences, some researchers argue lobsters are too dissimilar to vertebrates to feel pain and that their reaction to negative stimuli is simply a reflex.

Nonetheless, lobsters and other decapods, such as crabs and shrimp, do satisfy all of the criteria for a pain response.
Lobsters guard their injuries, learn to avoid dangerous situations, possess nociceptors (receptors for chemical, thermal, and physical injury), possess opioid receptors, respond to anesthetics, and are believed to possess some level of consciousness. For these reasons, most scientists believe that injuring a lobster (e.g. storing it on ice or boiling it alive) inflicts physical pain.

Due to growing evidence that the decapods may feel pain, it is now becoming illegal to boil lobsters alive or keep them on ice. Currently, boiling lobsters alive is illegal in Switzerland, New Zealand, and the Italian city Reggio Emilia. Even in locations where boiling lobsters remains legal, many restaurants opt for more humane methods, both to appease customer consciences and because the chefs believe stress negatively affects the flavor of the meat.
I think if you want to act like you care about animals, you should assume they do feel pain and then go from there. Even if you don't stop eating meat sourced from animals, it probably won't hurt (ugh) to make sure they are treat well and slaughtered as swiftly and humanely as possible.

On a personal level, I think boiling critters alive is rather ogrish.

I would opt to kill it before boiling it. I don't buy into ideas that if animals are killed or not killed in a certain way before cooking that they taste different.

Are there any animals you wouldn't eat? For me it is insects and pork.

That's a surprisingly difficult question with no absolutes I can think of. Not intending to dodge it, meat protein is meat protein after all. I'm pretty sure even a hardcore vegan might go full Fargo if circumstances forced the issue.

I am looking forward to the growth of the cultured meat industry as something more sustainable for the environment and maybe better than so many animals living in factory farm conditions.

Yes, technological superiority has been critical in most modern wars - gifting our advanced technology to an enemy was always insanity.

we haven't 'gifted' anything (unless it was stolen).

you honestly talk as if the last 40 years of globalisation hasn't been to the benefit or self-interest of the west at all.

that we're all beholden to fatuous trickle-down economics is not china's problem, either.

If a product is being manufactured in China they will have full knowledge of every intricacy, the detail and the art.

Obviously 'trickle down' doesn't work, it certainly doesn't work from the other side of the world.

Obviously there have been short term benefits of manufacturing in China, equally obviously the long term detriment vastly outweighs this.

Technological superiority has also been critical in trade, we have completely given that away.
