How do I manage my subordinate aides? Each of my classes have at least one 1 on 1 aides for some very disabled aides. I always tell them good morning or afternoon Ms. or Mr. whatever name is easiest for me pronounce. The aides are appreciative that I acknowledge them since they said others teachers don't. They also have said that I am a good teacher unprompted before.

It is still really strange to have a lady old enough to be my mom call me Mr. Beth and act with deference to me. This is doubly so for the Arab and Muslim ones who probably think I am one of them and have some kind of affinity/extra respect for me.
What is there to do? It sounds like they already respect u and recognize u as a superior. That's cool. Just be nice to them

Warm coffee is nice. I am all about the iced coffee though. Cold brew is the best kind of coffee in fact.

At least I am doing World War 2 with U.S. 2 kids. New Imperialism and China for the World History kids and then World War 1. So we are coming back to at least fun stuff.

Two days into work for 2021, I've about had enough.

I'm putting another set of gun barrels and various robot parts through the workshop, its my only motivation to go in at present.

(My last manager didn't specifically say I couldn't use company equipment to make firearms parts, I haven't got round to discussing it with my new manager - he's struggling enough to keep his head above water with the place practically idle and not a single new project being introduced, fuck knows whats going to happen if he has to do any work, historically we would have at least two internal projects and two external customers running at any one time)

think everyone is really struggling with motivation this time around.

we're in a third massive lockdown and i think everyone is just out of juice. i've been procrastinating for about 70% of my workday. judging from emails/teams activity, it's a general malaise, too. wasn't like this before new year. wonder how long before something blows up.

I've always made a point of amusing myself, advancing myself and doing my own projects at work, just for the fun of it.

I had the workshop team, who I don't even manage, well motivated to get work done so they could squeeze their own stuff in here and there, in breaks and their own time, also recycling scrapped equipment and material for their own use. The new moron has put a block on that for no obvious reason and now they're morose.

i really hate managers and bosses who try to stamp down on small indulgences that hurt no one. especially in times like these. people need motivation and uplift.

When there's not much to do you might as well let people muck around, then when there's work to be done they'll be there and willing to do extra.

Or you can be an ass and crush their productivity.

I like to think I was fairly chill about my management style. But sometimes being the "dickhead" can be unavoidable. Employees don't always get along with each other, so you have to break that up. Or they'll go off on you, so you have to put your foot down. Or they break/lose things, so you have to get to the bottom of that. And then there's just the procrastination. If I drive halfway across the state for a job, I'm not going to lounge about a greasy spoon for an hour and a half lingering over a long-cold breakfast and claim it as work.

I know another company who had a guy that lied about where he was and what he was doing. His company car was traced to a casino, where his boss met him for the keys.

We all procrastinate a little. I just can't focus for 8 hrs straight and work through my tasks in bursts myself. Throughout the day it may add up to like 1-2hrs of 'off' time, including lunch.

Kinda depending on the amount of work that needs to be done of course. It's also easier if it's just one thing that requires attention/focus, usually though I'm juggling some 6-8 different projects/documents at once and random questions that come up in between.

As for management style; I like to be hands off as much as possible. As you said though sometimes you just have to get personally involved more than you'd like.

Hands off is a good way to put it. I don't really enjoy "exercising power" over power over people, and resent being maneuvered into a position where I have to get involved that way. I'd rather shoot the shit about non-work stuff during breaks or whatever, but realize that being too chummy can also wreak havoc on respect for your management. A trap I've seen people fall into and refuse to do so myself.

End result I guess is I've seen more people get off their asses when I show up to inspect a project than for others in the company's leadership. I think that I'm sometimes spun into the bad cop reputation by other upper-ups even if all I do sometimes is show up and wave if everything looks cool.

disclaimer: not a management expert by any means; didn't go to college for this *#&

re: procrastination,

as long as the work's done well in the end within reasonable timelines or (if applicable) enclosed schedules, that's my primary concern. but i don't really have much leeway for people flipping a schedule on its head sitting on their thumbs most of the day while other people are doing their tasks for them.

Last two meetings I've scheduled to resolve simple questions have been hijacked by the quality manager who has gone rambling off about completely unrelated issues to the point that by the end of the meeting no-one even knows what we're discussing or why and we're out of time to agree anything.

Last meeting:

Dilbert "We need to agree some product names for this line of products which are more meaningful for the customers so they don't keep ordering the wrong parts and getting angry"
QA Mgr "Yes but what is the internal release process for firmware on a completely unrelated product for a different customer set in a different industry made in a different factory?"

The same quality manager takes an average of 30 seconds to approve 20-30 file document packs.

I've agreed with my manager not to schedule any more meetings for input, do what I think is best and let everyone else give yes/no approvals when the time comes.

Ugggh, that is the worst. Company meetings should not be allowed to stray off-topic or be hijacked by internal politics/rivalries. Such a waste of time for everyone involved. Needs a relentless guiding hand. Honestly one of the biggest kinds of grudges I hold in my business life is a wasted afternoon, fwp.

I'm going to miss having Uzique around to twist my words and unnecessarily, sarcastically retort about why that isn't the worst. I even had a response subconsciously formulated to the effect of "yeah getting bitten on the testicles by a brown recluse while you're on COVID ICU is probably worse." Now that'll just fade unused into the cosmic void.
