i wanted to make a gif out of it, but i never got around to it. That guy was a real piece of work too. Had a head like a cathode TV. Real blockhead...literally.

He would have a fancy excel spreadsheet up on his monitor at all times to make it look like he was doing work, but he would really be reading taiwanese novels or sleeping.

He also was a "club promoter" at a pretty iconic club in LA. It was basically him trying to sell bottle service to his facebook circle so that he could get in the club for free. He told my ex how he was basically a loner in college and after, but when he started going to clubs and drinking it "turned him into a social guy". Felt a little bad, but he was such a shithead that my sympathy could only extend so far.

I've found myself in a battle against the CFO of one of our business units for some decisions I made around employee compensation during COVID. I've told the CEO of the whole group that this is the hill I'm willing to stake my employment here on. I have a feeling this will lead to one of two disparate outcomes- I'm either going to get fired or promoted.

as you probably expected, I am fighting on behalf of my (and other) employees for what I know is the right thing to do. What boggles my mind is we are talking about tens of thousands of dollars. I will write off as a loss more than that amount this month in a separate transaction, and no one will bat an eye at that. But compensating employees for time we required them to take off is a big no no, to the point where they are trying to force me to get employees to pay it back!

We are a multi-billion dollar company with healthy profit margins. I refuse to let my company treat employees like pawns, and am willing to lose my job over it.

I'm going to go home and drink one or 4 glasses of wine to decompress. I expect to get a lot of calls on Line today, so I might as well prepare myself.

Is there anything you can do like submit to the press if you do get fired, or are you bound by non-disclosures?

No need. Someone talked some sense into the CFO and I was told that it was all a big misunderstanding.

I think they were worried because I threatened to quit, which after this I probably will.

I should be happy I got my way but this whole ordeal has made me very bitter about the way we are being treated.

I’ve been in a similar situation Ken. Not in the context of covid, but as a manager standing up for my coworkers to corrupt administration. I decided to quit and the institution closed down within another 6 months. Wasn’t a good feeling in any part of it. But I got the chance to go to Kuwait as a result of my decision.

it’s a bit like in intimate relationships. once one of the party threatens to quit or raises the spectre of separation, it doesn’t tend to go away.

you’re right that you’ll either get a promotion or leave on your own terms. it’s a weird sort of bargaining. i left my last publishing house after a dispute like that which dragged on for about 3-4 months of moaning and acrimony.

I have to fight constantly for things, but I think in those cases it's more a byproduct of being a satellite office in another country and having an HR team that is unwilling or unable to question why policies are put in place. We are kind of treated like a red-headed stepchild. These are healthy arguments in my opinion, and I've had more than one senior-level person tell me they appreciate my candor and willingness to challenge the status quo.

But yeah, I don't see myself here in my current role much longer. I think it's the healthy decision to make.

Idealists tend to get used and become bitter, thats work for you.

Most people who threaten to quit usually do within six months whatever they're offered, most companies know this.
