Slick video, very little padding. Maybe even informative! But I bet the average soda drinker doesn't watch or read much about product engineering and design, so it was a waste after all.

Tragic.

I'm partial to design, myself. Sure, the product needs to do the job well, but the true excellence is in merging technical genius with design genius. Dyson. Apple. Koenigsegg. Others of the same cloth.

teenage engineering make neat stuff. just don't try to buy any of it because it costs 3x as much as it probably should. but neat. just 'neat'.

I never got into high end sound equipment because it gets so expensive so so fast. It's worse than book collecting, because at least the book itch is scratched when you get the first printing first edition. Audio gear? next year's model is lit, fam!

that above is mostly just a toy synth/sampler/fm radio. definitely nothing 'high end audio' about it. just costs thousands cause of dEsigN.

also it's not really true that audio gear gets better year on year. in the purely solid state digital domain, maybe. although arguably at this point the quality of most consumer-level ADCs is already pushing beyond the limits of human hearing. but analogue stuff from the 1970s has its own sound that won't easily be replaced. people rightfully value the sounds of lots of older gear and 'superannuated' technology.

take a look at the headphone amplifier market and consider the fact that modern-day audiophiles are all splooging over giant vacuum tubes. that technology is pre-world war one.

I like seeing old technology still finding practical applications and in use.

if you or anyone you know has an old fostex or tascam tape deck lying around, like a 4-track, you know, those things that were dirt cheap throughout the 80s and 90s and indeed a hallmark of 'lo-fi' and shitty recording technology ... put it on eBay. those things are now hugely desirable by a contemporary 'tape scene' full of people who fetishize precisely the muck and distortion and crappiness of tape.

there's about 50 years of technology/media in use in this.

That reminds me of somebody on my community facebook group who put out a curb pickup alert for a PS2 and Gamecube. Those are valuable in good condition. Don't just put them on the ground outside.

Parents pressured me to sell my consoles as a kid "for a computer." Got utterly cleaned out by a second-hand shop with no scruples. NES, Genesis, and Super Nintendo were all three gifts from my grandma over various years. Still had the boxes and documents for everything. The only thing that was left afterwards was a Game Boy, a non-functional Intellivision, and I think an Action Max.

Their objective failed. Owning a computer didn't make me play less video games. I ended up playing more because instead of waiting to buy or rent a cartridge, I had an entire world of shareware and online games to dive into. Come home, connect to FreeI, and do some mudding. If they knew more about tech, maybe they could have seen that coming (also, I didn't even stick with IT).

Kind of makes you think about the tech-ignorant being in charge of tech decisions at corporate and government levels.

I am pretty proud of the fact I never owned a PS4 or X1 considering the next generation of them are set to be released. I still have one of the Special Edition Playstation 3s that are capable of playing PS1 and 2 games though. What an amazing product.

PS3s before they were feature-axed were never surpassed by any Sony console product since.

I bought a cheap PS4 when they were on deep discount, but barely use it. Nintendo's alright for nostalgia franchises, but without Mario Maker I probably wouldn't have turned on the WiiU/Switch very often. I feel like there is a lot of untapped potential in that sort of game, but I resent the subscription service model console companies have now.

avatars look much better on the mobile version. this is actually pretty cool.

we’re leading a rearguard action to revive forums in 2020. we are probably actually ahead of some curve, somewhere. it’s only a matter of time before tiktokking 13-year-olds get tired of satirising marxism with memes and move their focus to the net nerds of the early 00s.

i better sort myself out an avatar if i’m to have any self-respect.
