I resent having to be told to care about an irrelevant nature documentary person. I rather hear about what Lady Gaga is up to.

you're free to do whatever the fuck you want. nobody is even telling you to care. he's just a tv person who has promoted good causes and generally good television to a very large audience. that is pretty irrefutable. there are viewing figures, you know.

People are forcing me to consider the nature guy's views on climate change. I don't ask for it. But people tell me "the nature man is saying we need to combat climate change". And I just don't like being told what to do by foreign celebrities.

Listening to the BBC world service while in a place like Kuwait was like holding onto a piece of flotsam for dear life in a vast ocean of strangeness.

Cobra Kai season 1

4.5/10

Good enough to watch for nostalgia purposes but ultimately fairly corny.

A recent study by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNTWO) compiled figures from government and tour operators throughout the continent to assess the state of the wildlife tourism industry. It found that the industry contributes 80% of international travel sales to the continent, a large percentage of the $34.2 billion African tourism industry.
https://edition.cnn.com/2015/07/29/afri … index.html

so wildlife/safari holidays account for ca. 80% of a $34 billion industry.

the size of the hotel-resorts and package holiday market? $510bn.

you may as well blame tiger woods or something for global warming. he has no doubt encouraged many businessmen to fly to golf resorts on the canary islands or wherever-else to play 18-holes.
Now do the same figures for carbon footprint.

the onus is on you to prove your asinine little theories, not me. linking a promo piece in the independent and the overall patterns of air-travel in the 20th century is not exactly water-tight stuff dilbert. i'm afraid you're going to have to resubmit this paper.

It's on Netflix. It needs to figure out if it's a comedy or a drama

You asked for some empirical evidence, do you even know what 'empirical' means?

yes, and evidence has to be relevant. a graph of air travel usage in the 20th century has nothing to do with david attenborough. are you really this atrocious at analysis?

i read science papers all day long buddy. sorry but for all of your posturing, you’re not very good at the ‘methods’ part. we are talking basic correlation-causation stuff here, not exactly bonferroni corrections.

I'm sure the marketing people at the paper understand their audience, I could probably find more if I could be bothered.

Anecdotally instagram seems to be about 50% morons posing in exotic locations often next to exotic animals.

Look at me on a melting glacier, in a rainforest, counting frogs in the amazon, disrupting penguins nesting etc etc the parallels are pretty clear.

ah yes, ‘marketing people at newspapers’. have you worked in publishing of any kind? do you understand how publicity departments work? they don’t do detailed analysis of an audience before hosting a short and negligible puff piece, dilbert. it’s click bait. any attempt to drive website traffic. ad revenue. it costs them absolutely nothing to do.

publicity departments are always trying to drum up free content out of anniversaries, notable dates, holidays, book launches, tv series, etc. it’s part of the general churn.

please tell me more how one short listicle in a minor english newspaper is ‘evidence’ that vast numbers of people are embarking on tours of the world to ‘follow attenborough’s footsteps’.

you are a vain and silly man.

the scientist par excellence. ‘here’s my lazy narrow minded hot take but i can’t be bothered to substantiate it’.

i’m sure that the reason zoomers and millennials use instagram and go on holiday is because of an octogenarian documentary maker. there can be no other reason why young people would want to take and share selfies, or go to the picturesque locations.

You've grown up with it so it doesn't seem strange to you.

Now people put taking exotic trips and getting their selfies ahead of buying a car, house etc, burning up their super, more than that they go into debt to fund it.

This is what my facebook feed is full of.

Its novel and there must have been a trigger.
I think its perfectly reasonable to suggest that celebrity travellers like Attenborough could easily have been part of it.
I mean, don't people copy celebrities?
It wasn't a thing before and he's one of the few who did it and publicised it in this way.

I'm sure some lazy hipster will spend a decade writing his PhD thesis on it sometime in the near future.

yes, and 'exotic' wildlife holidays as a global industry are <10% the total value of the regular package holiday industry.

a lot more people are going to the maldives to take pictures next to azure waters and to sunbathe than they are climbing the central african plateau to pester gorillas, dilbert. A LOT MORE. as i said, you should accuse golf-pros or something for global warming, because the numbers of people flying to tenerife to play golf on a course next to a black sand beach or whatever-the-fuck are a LOT higher than people going to FUCKING ANTARCTICA.

i suppose your family have never flown anywhere on holiday before, have they? never gone to a resort? never took a holiday with the intention of sunning near a pool? almost certainly not.

the reason international jet-setting has taken off since the 1970s is all because of david attenborough.

I would hazard a guess that a week in Malaga is a whole lot less carbon intensive than a trip to antarctica or the galapagos.

As of 2019 there was like 500k influencers on instagram. They can't be all on disruptive natural tours inspired by Attenborough, can they?

The documentaries are a way to edutain and an opportunity to pass along critical information and awareness. They're going to reach a wider audience than a private college library.

Two in two-hundred passengers aboard a 737 on their way to take selfies with elephants. Much impact.

well actually most of those journeys are taken by boat, dilbert, research vessels specifically. not many boeing jumbo jets flying to the galapagos.

and when the industry for regular package holidays is many orders of magnitude bigger than the exotic-wildlife game ... do you really have to think about this? you really think tens of millions of brits flying 3,000 miles to malaga and back every year is doing LESS damage than a few people going to antarctica? lmao.

think about it: the package-resort and holiday industry is worth MUCH more than the wildlife tour holiday. and wildlife tour holidays are HUGELY more expensive than those discount hops to spanish islands.

Yes, a ship is a far more efficient means of personal transport than a seat on a jet aircraft.

one research ship that makes it in and out of antarctica every 6 weeks versus an ENTIRE INDUSTRY of CHEAP AIR TRAVEL.

hmmmm.

even for your standards this is a remarkably fucking stupid argument. penguin botherers are not contributing to global warming.
