I am happy that the Russians didn't become Protestants. I have a lot of respect for the Eastern Orthodox Church. Though I dislike how how nicely Russia treats Muslims living in and around it.
I'm sure russia has lovely parts but I could never live there. I feel very fortunate to live in northern europe.

the suppression of scots and welsh language in schools was a pretty terrible mistake of english education. but the same rubric was repeated across all of the newly industrializing nations. the same thing happened in spain with basque/catalan and happened all over germany with the assumption of high german as the 'official' language, at the expense of bavarian, etc. etc. so i do understand those cultural resentments.

Reserved/standoffish would be a better term to use. To be fair I've met plenty nice english people as well but they're certainly less open than any other nationality (as a stereotype). When I speak some dutch or french it's very easy to feel accepted, they instantly become very sociable. Scandinavians are also similarly open. I also feel my sense of humour aligns better with continental people in general.
Of the english speaking world I would say Australians Ive met have by far been the most cheerful / good humoured / easy to talk to.
It's just strange to me that out of all the above the english seem least interested in meeting / socialising with foreign people (even when in a different country). It's like there is a barrier of sorts holding them back. Tend to stick together as well.
