Somehow thousands of times more popular and well known than the obscure Africans who happen to live in the U.K. you post.
what i know about hip-hop can be summed up on a pithy post card, but that song is total trash.

could not care less about it’s popularity. does that mean nicki minaj is better than beethoven?

The Africans who happen to live in the U.K. you posted isn't very good either. Most humans actually agree.

why are you being pointlessly racist? aren't you a non-white who 'happens to live' in new jersey?

someone should skim off your seething self-loathing one day and turn it into a renewable energy source. you are a cultural cuck.

Wow, Uzique again turns out to be the real racist. Dilbert would never say something like that to me. He has absolutely never has.

no you are not. you’re not a real catholic either.

someone born in britain is british. they are citizens via the same principle as your citizenship of the united states. the only person being racist is you. which is odd. once again macbeth adopts spurious white nativist rhetoric in bad faith.

i've never given RTJ any time. i probably should.

i was a huge company flow/el-p fan when i was a teenager. i guess the slightly more big-stage style of RTJ put me off. i'm still not onboard with fucking drill or whatever. i hear those same trilling drum patterns over and over and over and i glaze over.

Yeah El-P is solid. When I started branching more into east coast hip hop, discovering Def Jux was like opening a little toy chest.

I like the collaborative approach and the willingness to experiment for RTJ. The raps themselves can be a little esoteric in their lyrics and flows, but i personally like that.

I'm not a fan of drill at all. I couldn't name one song or artist I like from the drill scene.

Gimme some of that Skepta grime all day though!

I switch up how I'm talking depending on who the audience is. I have fun with language dude. It's a good skill to have anyways cause I can go to other ppls level and connect and make them feel comfortable whether it's a young black dude from south la or an old person I'll switch to "sirs" and proper shit real quick. Otherwise I talk like a normal southern Californian.

Hating on Tekashi ok whatever but calling chief keef garbage? Lmfao. He was literally a pioneer in trap music and made drill take off as well (which has been dead a while now, about the time the UK got into it lol). So many modern rappers cite him as a major influence it's not even funny. Also soundcloud and mumble rap probably wouldn't even be what it is today without him, he was a catalyst for that shit blowing up. A lot of that style started with him

Bro literally don't share that opinion to ppl that are really into rap lol that will piss someone off. That dude dedicated a fuckin great song to kobe years ago and he not even from LA. Don't know how u can't at least appreciate that

Knowing your audience and speaking appropriately is a good skill to have. Speaking in slang to "black dudes from the south" is you being dumb. I'd guess that you actually don't do that because you'd probably be telling us how you got /slaped by a black dude for trying to talk to him.

FYI I am a person really into rap. I hang out with people who are really into rap. Nobody I know likes drill. That doesn't mean there aren't people (like you) who do. I stand by my opinion.

i have no attachment to rap or the stupid internecine conflicts that hip-hop heads have. too much to unpick between choosing favourites and identifying with some locale or scene. shit is confusing to me. people aren’t like that with electronic or classical music or whatever. ‘yo vienna is the best! fuck your berlin school shit!’

it is funny though that drooz makes out the U.K. is somehow way ‘behind’ on this stuff because drill is big here. grime totally flipped american rap, lots of new york rappers have explicitly talked about the energy and inspiration coming from that scene. likewise the heavily electronic aspects of most modern rap are all extensions of the U.K. thing. there’s a reason that even kanye west and whatever was hiring hudson mohawke to do his beats, and why people like zomby blew up, or S-X ended up getting hired by a bunch of massive US names.

some grime beats have totally transcended that scene, too. that whole sound and scene goes way back to before even dubstep/2-step, talking about wiley and eski, etc.

Didn't you spend a good chunk of time in this thread talking shit on dubstep in the US years ago? How is that different?

because the 'dubstep' that took off in the states, latterly called 'EDM', wasn't dubstep at all?

of course the US pioneered rap/hip-hop way before the UK. not contesting that. but i don't think the relation now is as androoz makes out, with the UK imitating american sounds years later when it's dead and moribund. there's an interchange and dialogue, and a transfer of producers across the atlantic, in a way that didn't happen with 'dubstep'/EDM. nobody in the UK was taking creative inspiration from skrillex and excision. it was like music for teenagers wearing glow sticks at giant festivals, 'rolling on molly'. completely unrecognisable.

didn't drake come over to the UK and try to join a grime crew or something? to skin the kudos and cool points? lol.

I couldn't care less really about who pioneered what. Music has a colorful history of co-opting, borrowing, branching off etc. I think that's a big part of why I love it- because it's very much an ever-changing landscape, and to see forms take cues and influences from each other is really cool to witness and experience, especially when two forms you love coalesce.

Drake has been trying to establish cool points ever since he was in a wheelchair as a teenager. He also had to name check his absent father to establish his credibility as a black man. Drake is corny as fuck, which makes him undeniably NOT COOL

i agree with that generally, but dubstep was a fucking cultural firestorm of the worst kind. a lot of appropriation/commercialism and then seeing a genuine organic 'scene' become this weird soundtrack to EDM mega-festivals and fratboys moshing. just very strange and sad.

of course i'm 10 years older now and i'n not going to die on any hills over fucking music genres.

drake is definitely corny. he posted a video of him working-out to a pretty unknown song by a bristol producer that i know. THAT was a strange crossover. everyone went nuts messaging the guy, pev.

the song was literally one of the tracks i would have been going crazy over in those dubstep discussions 10 years ago. it is literally a bristol song: bristol artist, bristol label, bristol sound-system culture.

This is why I was somewhat hesitant to check out the American EDM festivals more at first like I was saying in the other thread.  It really does seem to be like you said, where America took some original music, honed in on one of arguably the worst but most characteristic aspects of it, commercialized the shit out of that music, and then it took off like wildfire somehow because there are more people than not with such garbage taste in music.  And then whenever you mention techno music to most people, dubstep is instantly the first thing to shoot into their head when trying to relate because it's kind of the only techno subgenre that ever went mainstream here without also having to pair up with pre-established mainstream vocal artists, such as what David Guetta has been doing for a while now.  It's really kind of disappointing because trance is one of the only genres of just about any kind of music that really genuinely gets me going, and it feels almost impossible to find people that can relate.

I've always just kind of considered myself as not being a "music person" because it seemed like the kind of music I liked was not all that popular past the early 00s and I never went out of my way to search for more, but ever since happening across Tomorrowland and then also its One World Radio streaming app when they released that a couple years ago, I'm finding that I can repeatedly come across all kinds of techno-derived music that I really love over and over for the first time and it's quite a revelation.  My local radio station also has an LGBT-dedicated HD Radio subchannel called Pride Radio that plays a lot of EDM music, and that's probably my favorite FM station now when I'm not listening to my hilarious morning show on the rock station.
