can think of fewer more futile exercises than rolling stone listing the 'top 500 albums of all time' in 2020.

can't wait for the times to round up every book in existence and declare the 'top 500 books of all time'.

Pretty pointless, but rating music is the point of the music press.

quite a number of leading music publications have abandoned ratings, actually. reviews, yes, but not to boil it all down to stars and decimal-point scales.

What music service do you use? Google Play Music is gone and replaced with YouTube Music. Do not recommend.

At a minimum one I want would have:

Ability to upload music
Smartphone compatible

I don't mind a subscription service but I rather be able to buy specific music. Thank you

Re: 3 months ago, for what it's worth stars and percentages work better when quantifying games and movies as a sum of their parts. Always felt excessive for music.

Don't use music subscription service. I don't listen to a lot of music on my smartphone.

No subscription service as well.

I have a re-purposed phone without a sim card but with an SD card I use as my mp3 player. Musicbee w/ entire music library on said mp3 player. I'll listen to the FM radio in the car for new music.

Evidently I never left the 2000's.

I don't either. I use my smart phone to connect to bluetooth speakers.

I have an old ipod video from 2006. I would totally use that if it had bluetooth.

I mean I don't play a lot of music from my phone. Really the only time I do, I'm out of service range on a trail or in the middle of nowhere

Do you guys ever listen to entire albums in one sitting? Instead of flipping through songs I will sometimes just tell my Echo to play a certain album and work.

I think it is a great way to listen to music. Oftentimes I will find the lesser known songs on albums really great.

an album is sequenced and arranged in that way for a reason. pecking at singles or b-sides is a blight from the youtube/spotify streaming generation.

not listening to an album from start to finish is like picking up a book and only reading chapter 15, over and over.

albums have peaks and troughs, changes in tempo, tone, song. a ballad follows a rousing number, etc.

the album format exists for a reason. the single format exists for a reason. i don't see any reason to listen to singles unless it's radio-play or you're a teenage girl. does anyone even buy singles anymore? the only short-play EPs i buy are dance records for functional DJ use.

singles and EPs have been around just as long as albums and LPs, of course.

my post literally said "the single format exists for a reason", that is, the single is a standalone format with its own structure. do you even read before you sally off these pissant posts?

i mean the non-sequenced, happenstance, algorithm-served way of browsing music now. everyone ends up listening to the same 40 songs pushed by the same 15 artists. even 'niche' playlists, 'curated' (ahem) by services like spotify, end up funnelling people into remarkably similar silos of taste.

even a traditional single or EP had some sequencing or coherency to it. 3/4 songs, the 'A'-side and 'B-side logic, singles on the front and slower or more experimental tracks on the flipside, etc. this is all entirely lost when you're pecking at an artists discography or browsing by 'vibe' on a streaming app.

The new interpol album is awful. i have seen them live three times. i feel like they passed the event horizon where it will be 40 year olds asking them to play the hits while they remember that time jessica came over to their brooklyn loft in 2003 after attending the anti-iraq war protest.

arcade fire are in a similar death spiral with added accusations of sexual misconduct as the icing on top, too.

Britney is "the most influential pop star of her generation", with artists like Lady Gaga, Lana Del Rey and Charli XCX namechecking her, writes Nick Levine. Is 2022 the year to re-evaluate the singer?
