Imagine if you had access to Rick & Morty back then. Veins as thick as garden hoses on your head just to keep up with oxygen demand.

Is there really?

Anyway I did specify that I'd rather watch it than the newer movie Jokers, which are basically humorless live action cartoons. At least it has Joker telling jokes.

Ford v Ferrari.  8/10, rounded up for being a racing movie.

It has a lot of issues but it seemed good for the masses who don't know racing

Ready or Not 8/10

A bit predictable, Samara Weaving is cute and goofy, I liked it better than Get Out

Wonder Woman 84 Trailer - 10/10

Tenet - 8/10
Neat concept, like Inception, didn't entirely hang together, like Inception, pretty clever that its now possible to create a completely digital world without the slightest hint that its special effects, Elizabeth Debicki has nice legs.

I don't remember what I rated WW, if anything. I think modern comic book movies are hobbled by this new(ish) requirement that they fit into some grand cinematic universe, rather than be made purely to make the best movie they can't.

5/10, was OK I think?

There was a very minuscule reference when they first showed it.

Wait I thought it was you who griped about people not being careful enough with the Star Wars canon and that Joker was flawed because it was part of the DC universe - although that wasn't even a trivial part of the film.

the lighthouse - 7/10.

very stylishly shot, the second black-and-white nautical film of last year, weirdly enough (with Bait, which was great). incredible sound production, a great lurching elemental thing. would have sounded amazing in a cinema if one was available.

i don't think robert pattinson is a particularly good actor, his accent in this movie was all over the place, from about 4 different regions and approx. 2 different centuries, but i respect him for taking a role in such an ostentatiously 'arty' movie. plus, to accept a part in a two-character study opposite willem dafoe takes some balls. dafoe is a master with decades of experience in avant-garde theatre, art film, hollywood -- pretty much the whole range. so fair play to pattinson for not looking like a complete amateur.

i feel like 'bait' is a lesser known and more independent-cinema type film, so here's the trailer for that in the interests of promoting good stuff.

Pattinson was good enough in Tenet, Kenneth Branagh was miscast

every single review i have seen of tenet has said how laughably bad kenneth branagh is. it's very odd to see a person with serious shakespearean chops do a 'dodgy russian villain' pantomime act.

speaking of which, in just how many fucking movies do we need to see michael caine in a sports jacket, eating a plate of pie and mash, saying gorr blimey guv'nor etc?

my local hipster cinema frequently wins national-level awards for their projection team, still insist on using proper film reels, etc, and frequently do retrospective seasons in which you can watch the restored works of lots of masters. plus they have an amazing bar/cafe adjoined to it, so you can have a few glasses of wine whilst sitting and watching your movie. do rate.

Branagh did his best and actually wasn't terrible, just miscast.

The slightly better cinema is licensed so you can buy your moscato at the same time as the ticket.

But even hipsters barely go to the cinema these days, and I'm fucking tired of asians gabbling and slurping through the whole show.

i go there often just because it's 5 minutes from my apartment, and is a nice place to sit and work and watch the good and beautiful stroll by. plus they do lots of talks and presentations there, you can go and catch some academic or author on their book tour, see a retrospective talk before a film, etc. lots of very 'thought-provoking' stuff, you know.

incidentally that 150m stretch of waterside is where BLM dragged the colston statue (from 'colston tower'), to unceremoniously dump him in the water at the end.

We have some great old art deco buildings, barely teetering along and won't last as busineses.

If I win the lottery I may buy it and use it for X-Box (You can do that at palace on a former imax screen already https://palacenova.com.au/big-picture-gaming)
Although I would have to buy an xbox.

that's a very nice cinema. art deco is definitely the best idiom/style for that golden era hollywood feel.

it reminds me of a funny passage in clive james' autobiography. he talks a lot about everyone being crazy about american films and going to the art deco cinema in KOOOGARAH or someplace.

people go to the art cinemas here a lot. i can't speak for the condition of the shopping mall odeon or whatever as i don't go watch transformers/marvel movies. they're probably dilapidated with red carpet from the 1970s, sticky with toffee popcorn kernels.

it's one upshot of the netflix/streaming model, i guess. independent cinemas are having to go back to the classic formula and create a quality experience again. i'm all for it. i don't have any great passion for 'film reels' or 'the art of cinema' but i like seeing good movies with a malbec and a smaller, discerning audience who are fucking quiet.

I've said something to the effect that Joker was cheapened as a result of being a Joker origin story. I don't think it was intended to fit into DCEU, but a lot of other DC movies are, which I think complicates putting a film together that makes sense. Too many chefs.

If I cared about Star Wars canon, I don't really anymore. The nine movies as a whole just aren't very good.

Its hard to predict the future of cinema at this point, maybe there is none with old people dying out.
Between multi-hundred-million dollar blockbusters and tiny art-house films there's very little these days.

i would say it’s in good condition. young people go to the cinema, not only boomers.

there’s also huge amounts of international film. not just the art house scenes in france and germany with their generously state-funded initiatives. south korea is huge right now (just like hong kong and taiwan had their own ‘new waves’ in the 90s). there’s good cinema leaking out of places like iran, too. people are going to continue following it with interest.

there’s also more ways than ever for mid-tier film-makers to raise bank. the major studio system is not the only route to wide distribution and success now. yes, there’s netflix throwing huge sums at trifling proposals; but there’s also crowdfunding, streaming, independent movie tours, etc. people are finding new ways all the time.

what’s happening with film qua film is a lot like how hipsters have revived analogue photography and vintage furniture. it’s like a rearguard action. sure, it can be fetishistic and silly, but there’s also a new generation who are continuing the use of old media and technologies. compare that to netflix where every single one of their production uses those gigantic RED cameras and all consequently has that slightly unreal ultra-HD aesthetic ...

Funny how hipsters think toppling statues is right-on but they're fine with enjoying the wealth and fine old buildings the same people delivered to them.

that's not so much a hot take as a tepid drool.

'hipsters' didn't topple statues; BLM is not a 'hipster' movement. it is not concerned with aesthetics or conspicuous consumption, i.e. the stereotypical (hackneyed, really) things that 'hipsters' supposedly base their lifestyles around. BLM is a social justice and protest movement. hipsters don't believe in anything except self-curation (and a healthy dose of irony, again if you're relying on hackneyed 2006-era tropes).

secondly, people in bristol are more than aware of the legacy of slavery on the city. bristol's central wards are probably pretty consistently some of the most left-leaning (or green) constituencies of all. the city's historic links to the slave trade are everywhere: from the same waterfront as the arts cinema you can see, year-round, an actual slave galleon that is maintained and kept in the same floating harbour for the tourists.

thirdly, the watershed buildings are late-19th century industrial sheds, with no links to the slave trade whatsoever. they're connected to bristol's industrial past, not its 17th-18th century slave-trade. the entire area was derelict and abandoned through the 70s and 80s, and was regenerated by ... local council money, i.e. locals' taxes. i think people feel quite comfortable watching a film and having a beverage at their local arts cinema, thanks.
