I've had knee problems since my sporting days of yester-year. Anything above ~6 miles a day and my knee starts to slowly give out. It's not debilitating but I start to slow down so if I'd like to do something longer, I'll need to take measures

So easy to jack up the knees. I’ve been practicing correcting my gait by swing my hips front and back more as I walk, which extends each leg farther out, not having to bend the knee as much, taking the more load to the hips. It’s especially helpful on inclines.

do you pay attention to your base/pack/total pack weight? I recently swapped out almost all my gear for lightweight alternatives. I cut my base weight almost in half. I'm under 8 lbs for bag/pad/pack/tent. Really matters, especially if you have knee or back problems.

I can definitely pare down quite a bit I'm sure, but I'm not ready to go full ultra-light.
I have a decent pack and definitely lighter-weight stove, dehydrated home-made meals, tiny tent, etc.
No clue what my final weight is but I'm sure I can do something positive in that manner.

If I'm on a day hike I can go about 11 miles before the exact same thing happens, so it's kinda there waiting to attack me, just faster if I have too much weight

Yeah.. I think we're gonna need to see a video of you practicing this.

I mentioned i'm doing the Trans Catalina Trail. I plan to do this without a tent. I might be able to keep my pack under 15lbs, which would go a long way in keeping to the goal of finishing in 4 days - essentially 10miles/day.

I'm not at the point where i am full ultra-light, and i don't think i will realistically ever get there. There comes a point where you're making huge trade-offs for a lighter total weight vs. comfort. I feel like for a lot of UL backpackers it's kind of a contest or game.

It's definitely a contest with through-hikers. Lord knows the lighter their packs are, the more fulfillment they get.

I applaud efforts to go without a tent, I definitely couldn't. I do know many prefer a hammock + lightweight quilt over a tent but I don't think that's possible down there.

My lady really wants to backpack the Channel Islands, which does look great so let us know how it goes. Unfortunately its a long way to backpack when we live in a backpacking mecca... Then again, I'm pushing for Moab/Canyonlands so I guess I'm a hypocrite there.

No tent only bc the average temp at night is 55°. Cowboy camping should be fine.

I'm not totally sold on the quilt vs. sleeping bag. And for me, hammocks force your choice of hikes and sites- you always have to find spots with trees. It's the same reason I always go bear can vs. hang.

The catalina hike is sweet because you're ending every day at an actual campsite on the beach. In my opinion it's a perfect little backpacking trip, and definitely one for less capable hikers.

Backpacking is inherently the "walk wherever you want and when you're done put up a tent and sleep for the night" activity so I agree that limiting yourself by needing specific trees and the availability of bear wires takes away quite a bit of that freedom.

Here's me and the boss demanding a photo after setting up camp on the Dosewallips. Happy to walk around without a pack for a few minutes

I would love to get out to Olympic one day.

Any grizzlies? Or just black/brown?

Thanks! My dad is in his 60's, has all his, and not even greying. Though I think it comes from the mom's side anyway, but at least I have some good hair genetics mixed in there

Just black bears in Olympic NP. Cougars too, which are slightly more dangerous. Any semblance of common sense and you'll be just fine. It's the complete idiots that get hurt.

If you make it up, make sure to head over to the Hoh. That's where the picturesque hanging moss locations are. It can get a bit drizzly though...
Beautiful anywhere you make it around though.

Also in Jan/Feb (can't remember when), definite apply for the Enchantments Lottery, cuz, well...

is it uncut, i.e. a post-lockdown cut? because that's remarkably in shape if you haven't seen a barbers/hairdressers in a long while. i look bedraggled at this point.

Hasn't been cut since mid Feb.
In fairness there were a few photos on the same bridge and I picked one where I didn't look like a ragamuffin. It's usually in quite a disheveled heap.

A MTG booster box. 540 cards with at least 30 rares and mythic rare. I am cataloging everything right now. I have some nice additions but not $100 worth of value I feel.

I did buy $120 worth of single cards yesterday from MTG retailer. Take note of the prices of some cards.

What does a box cost these days, anyways? Are you going for a specific build? I recall you mentioning you don't go into shops to play--do you ever get to test out your builds?

A booster box from a recent set is $100. They go up in value as time goes but that takes years.

There is a multiplayer game mode called Commander where you use 100 unique cards to build a deck to use with a commander card which is a legendary creature. That is what the big boxes are I get from Etsy are for. If you buy a box like this you will always find stuff that fits into one of the 10 commander decks I have.

For the all 60 card decks, I buy singles and those are tuned. I have done more than test.many of those. They are mostly recreations of decks I built on magic to gathering arena the free to play PC game I would introduce you to if Jay hadn't Cancelled me.

Very neat. Interesting that a box still costs about $100--that's what I recall from the early-to-mid 2000's as well. Never heard of Commander. We used to just do team games for muliplayer using standard decks. I forget exactly how we arranged the rules, but it for sure wasn't anything being done in official tournaments at the time.

I get the collector side of it in buying specific cards. Some of the artwork is gorgeous. I always really liked the oddball cards that had art pretty 'out there' for a Magic card.

Actually I did get some good value from this deck. These are the prices of singles from this set
Just 4 of the cards I got from the box total $71. So I did make my money back in total.

Commander actually isn't an offical game mode managed by Wizards of the Coast but Wizard of the Coast supports it. Basically the game mode came out of regular MTG tournaments. Those tournaments would have judges and the judges would play this made up multiplayer mode with each other after the tournament since it is a casual experience compared to having a tune 60 card meta deck. Commander is actually probably the most popular format of all. I would love to tell you more about it. Especially if you download Magic Arena.

I promised my wife I wouldn't get into Magic, Warhammer, or Inquisitor because I tend to get way too into it and blow a lot of cash. Magic Arena would be the gateway drug to me trying to keep up with the tournament meta constantly.

Smart man. I have blown at least $2000 on this stuff in the last year.

At least its money not spent on temporary highs like drugs and gambling though.

how does MTG work? do u play it with other ppl or something? are you actually into it or do u just collect the cards to eventually resale or something?

also i fucked up and bought a subscription to a girls onlyfans today. i've never done anything like this before, never bought porn or anything. idk how i should feel and idk if this makes me a simp/cuck or whatever. it was only $5 for a month and i won't renew but still. she's just some hot instagram thot i follow. there's a lot on instagram but i was drawn to this girl especially and in one of her posts she mentioned she posts nudes on her onlyfans unlike a lot of girls that apparently just tease i guess.

lust and compulsiveness got the best of me and i paid $5 to see a girls chocolate starfish (it was legit). i have spent $5 in much worse ways.
