An 11-year-old boy from Florida's Miami-Dade County is the youngest person to die from Covid-19 complications in the state, according to the Florida Department of Health.

According to the latest health records, he is the third minor in Florida to die of virus complications. The others were a 16-year-old girl in Lee County and a 17-year-old boy in Pasco County.
No big deal or cause for alarm. They are just really unlucky. There was nothing we could do about it.

Hey just think, if everyone had locked down completely for eight weeks this thing would have been done months ago.

Australia should have been virus-free but for dumbasses letting dumbasses fly in, community transmission has been contained multiple times now.

it was a very unlikely possibility even in month 1, as i said repeatedly at the time. the global system cannot shut down that immediately. it's a cruise ship, not a skiff.

we know that covid is highly contagious compared to other novel diseases, that it remains on surfaces for quite some time, behaves as an aerosol in certain conditions, etc. really, it is a symptom of our globalized system as much as inept government responses.

it's impossible to expect all flights, trade, freight, shipping, etc. to cease because of a (then) small outbreak. even if the medical community were making very loud and alarming noises. it's just not realistic. it's not a happy result, it's not an ideal description, but things are of course complicated by reality.

End the lockdown! Open up the economy!

Can you imagine how stupid you need to be to think the economy is worth more than the health and lives of hundreds of thousands of Americans? The economy breaks on its own anyway. It was going to break eventually but those kid's lives were guaranteed to be longer.

Yes lets have two-plus years of intermittent lockdowns and millions of deaths instead of an eight week holiday.

Also it's hard to wrap your head around how people who espouse economic priority can mentally divorce a miserable, deadly pandemic from market confidence.

again, this is childish wish-fulfillment. when has the world ever collaborated on a group decision of that magnitude before?

'if only back then, in day 1, with no prior precedent and no planning, we had all agreed to shut down and cull global GDP by 25%!'

very good stuff dilbert.

In the states that reopened, restaurant, hotel, etc. attendance was a fraction of pre-pandemic levels. Most places were doomed from the start. It turns out outsourcing manufacturing to China and turning the economy into a service based one was a bad idea.

well, the epidemiological thinking is clearly that it would be best to manage the pandemic and keep some level of economic activity. 8 weeks of total inactivity and shutdown would be a grievous hit to the global economy. people still need food, essential services, have rent to pay, etc. suspending everything isn't quite so simple. lots of people do not have 8 weeks' worth of savings. lots of landlords, businesses, institutions, etc. do not have 8 weeks of liquidity for their overheads.

Nothing can ever be shut down completely though, so the problem never goes away. You still need people to go to work to care for the sick, to stock the grocery store shelves, to deliver food and goods, etc. They're all potential vectors. I mean, theoretically, we could completely eradicate a lot of contagious diseases if we simply locked everyone in the world inside for 8 weeks. It's not realistic though.

It's amazing that Texas, Florida, and California's line graph is going straight up. Not even a zig zag or leveling off. Just straight to the moon.

i also don't think jay and all the young people going out partying quite understand just how unpleasant covid is for the 'not dead' crowd.

people in their 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s are admitted to hospitals in high numbers requiring intubation.

that's not sitting in a bed catching some oxygen. intubation and being placed in an induced coma is one of the most unpleasant and harrowing experiences you will ever go through. definitely worse than having flu for 3 weeks.

The good thing is that we have gotten better at saving people on vents. Apparently a cheap steroid reduces vent deaths by 30%. That raises the question as to how we didn't know giving people steroids while on vents helps.

this is only partly true. you should read this thread.

The trillion dollar question. Why are COVID cases increasing while deaths are decreasing? The answer is simple. It's called Simpson's paradox and it's the result of incorrectly pooling data and arriving at a false conclusion. A thread 1/9 #COVID19 #ThursdayThoughts

Well China and Australia have done it.
But for international travellers we would have been done months ago.
