I really liked this article from the National Review from probably the only author there worth reading. It compares the response in Europe to COVID vs the U.S.-Brazil-Russia. His overall point is that U.S. now has more in common with corrupt, and dysfunctional Russia and Brazil than the E.U. countries. You may need to open the link in an incognito window.

https://www.nationalreview.com/2020/06/ … americans/

Oh and the commentators strongly disagree with the writer. They are still convinced it is no big deal.

Some gold in the comment section, this is Jay word for word:

The coronavirus is a fairly contagious disease and until at least 60-80% of the population has immunity, it will continue to spread. That is true everywhere. We can slow the spread by practicing common sense social distancing, but the slower the spread, the longer the epidemic will be around.

A vaccine could change this but there is no guarantee that we will ever have one let alone have one in the next year. In the absence of a vaccine, insisting on draconian measures to stop the spread of the disease would be a national suicide pact. The challenge has never been about stopping the spread of the disease but in limiting its spread to those most vulnerable. If young people get the disease and recover quickly, that will in the long run slow the spread of the disease and reduce it to the problem of a typical flu season.

Finding treatments to shift the spectrum of severity has always been of paramount importance. Learning how to recognize and treat those cases that are most likely to lead to severe complications has already begun to reduce the mortality rate. Better prevention methods in long term care facilities could reduce the number of fatalities significantly. But in the end we are probably going to have to learn to live with the disease for a while and simply accept the risks that go along with living a normal life.
Another fantastic genius:

(2). KDW is very well aware that the US values individual liberty above nearly all else, in clear contrast to our Euro counterparts. If Americans have decided, through their state governors and legislatures, that they'd prefer to deal with the COVID risk by maintaining some semblance of public society during this time rather than mandating home-quarantine (as was done in Italy with minimal effect), then that's what we get by virtue of our model. I guess it might be cathartic for KDW to crap on American administration in general - see in particular the penultimate paragraph - but I fail to see the point.
Hahaha:

We have a large subset of our population that does not follow rules, does not believe in human decency, and will not comply with orders.

I imagine in that sense, Europe is better. IN many cases, they are much more homogeneous, also much more docile, and their police are much more free to imprison people.
You know it's a boomer when they sign the post like they would an email:

The US has 383 deaths per million. UK 637, Spain 606, Italy 574, France 456, Sweden 523, Belgium 830. This really the only number that matters. Most people totally recover and many never knew they had it.

nearly 9,000 people in Florida tested positive for coronavirus in the past day alone.

I wonder what will be the new goal post for Steve when the U.S. catches up with the U.K. per capita number. Our number is a little more than half theirs but we will catch up considering we are adding checks notes almost 40 times the amount of new cases.

You'd figure since they like saying "well, America is a bigger country" so often in different arguments that they would apply that here, and not roll in statistics from the Appalacians or whatever. Focus on states worst hit before claiming victory.

Meanwhile Australia is allowing Indians in and releasing them from quarantine despite them refusing to be tested.
Now Victoria is having a spike in infections.

remember, jay still denies the epidemiological commonplace that novel viral spreads are exponential. he buffets his wrongheaded thinking by far over-estimating how many americans have already had it, without complaint.

let’s see how far upwards the new infections curve can rocket. i wonder how many hospital beds america has.

mike pence cancels his rally in florida. but if re-opening is sensible, and the liberals are being hysterical, and the virus is n.b.d. ... why would you cancel your rally?

note their messaging. ‘out of an abundance of caution we have decided to ...’. they can’t even admit to their own u-turns or bad faith. even as they tip-toe out to save their own skin, they have to talk suggestively as if they are, really, being far too careful, really. these disingenuous fucks. how many people are going to die in july and august?

it's democracy, stupid.

shout out to the woman at the end who concludes masks are a flawed idea because you can't play the saxophone with a mask on.

although florida has a particular concentration of this sort of crazy, it just goes to show what the american diet of facebook and cable news leads to.

I don't understand how democracy devolves into something so detestable.

Come to think of it I've been asking myself that question since about 2002

total vacuum of leadership.

so to clarify:

america has a president doing rallies in states taking precautions, whose staff violate those precautions and take them down.
and a vice-president cancelling rallies in florida out of safety concerns, whose state leader denies that covid is even a big deal.

and these people seriously think that their stats are fine, and they only look bad because they're testing bigly. lmao.

I flicked on Fox News briefly, at a press conference Pence was asked if Trump's rally made sense, with the benefit of hindsight and given all the Secret Service and other officials infected or in quarantine.
His response was nothing outweighs constitutional rights to freedom of expression and assembly. I guess he's changed his mind.

it's quaint that americans still think the constitution is a sacred text that over-rules brute facticity.

the virus does not give a shit about 'constitutional rights'.

Constitutional conservatism has a lot to do with Protestant fundamentalism. Prots, and it is always Prots, treat the Constitution as a "sacred text handed down from our wise ancestors". It's an imperfect legal document. We shouldn't change it often but we should be open to change. Everyone should have at least one pet issue they want to shove into there.

you can thank the prots for all that freedom of expression and free enterprise.

catholic states tend to favour permanent serfdom.

you can always move to the mezzogiorno and experience authentic piety and poverty.

Please don't be offended when I say Prots. I don't mean you. You're an Anglican by birth. You're one of the good ones.

The Catholic Church has actually made it easier for Anglican clergy/followers to become Catholic clergy/followers.

On the reddit COVID subs, some people were mocking others as "doomers" when we suggested that in 2 weeks after reopening things would spike like crazy. "JuSt WaIt TwO mOrE wEeKs" they said.
