The whole world's economy is set to contract 10% in Q2, if Sweden ddn't have a single case thats how much their economy will contract, and I'm guessing the ABBA royalties have about dried up.

Still, they're not really doing very well.

also the population didn't have to 'buy in' to anything. the scandinavian countries have some of the highest rates of single occupancy anywhere in the world. finland is notoriously anti-social and has lots of national stereotypes about 'personal space' and even avoiding eye contact. these countries are, no shit, not going to be as susceptible to contagion as the gregarious and touchy-feely italians. they are crass stereotypes but describe very real social factors when it comes to that R-rate of transmission.

the swedish government did nothing and now many more have died and are dying than their neighbours. a government should act to stop preventable deaths. it seems like one of the main points of a government.

U.S. cases surge toward May’s high, with clusters among young people linked to bars and fraternity parties.

The United States reported more than 30,000 new infections on Friday, its highest total since May 1, with cases rising in 19 states across the South, West and Midwest.

Southern officials in particular are speaking out with increasing alarm about the large number of cases turning up in young adults.

At least 100 cases were linked on Friday to employees and customers of bars in the Tigerland nightlife district near the Louisiana State University campus. In South Carolina, cases among people ages 21 to 30 have grown 413 percent since April 4. And in Mississippi, state officials said several cases had been tied to fraternity rush parties in Oxford, home to the University of Mississippi. More than 80 percent of new cases in Oxford were in people age 18 to 24.
122,000 deaths in the U.S. with about 500-900 new ones a day.

Trump rallygoer sans mask: “We had a friend who died from Covid, and his son was on a ventilator, he almost died. So we know it’s real, but then at the same time you don’t know what the facts are, you feel like maybe one side plays it one way and the other side plays it another.”
fucking hell these trump supporters are literally trying to remove themselves from the gene pool.

trump has these country rubes by the balls!

I live in N.J. I called my aunt/godmother in Florida is check in on her. My grandmother is down there too so it is important to me that Florida gets a handle on this.

Florida won't get it together though. They are doomed. I predict they will be hit as badly or worse than NY.

US President Donald Trump says he ordered authorities to slow down the rate of coronavirus testing because it was adding to the number of COVID-19 infections being recorded.

Mr Trump described testing as a "double-edged sword", saying: "When you do testing to that extent you're going to find more people."

"You're going to find more cases, so I said to my people, 'Slow the testing down please.'

"They test and they test and we got tests — people don't know what's going on. We got tests, 'We got another one over here'."

I suppose thats one way to keep the infections down.

recall in the early weeks, when the trump administration were conspicuously doing nothing and retarding the efforts of state-level responses, when trump said he didn’t want the cruise boat to dock because ‘it would be bad for the numbers’.

we have media-celebrity politicians. since other news stories have been on the front pages, i very much doubt they’ve even been attending meetings about covid. it’s only a problem when it’s causing ‘bad optics’.

it's interesting to me how conservatives frame the immense numbers of dead from covid-19.

individual freedom should be paramount and their economic wellbeing should be preserved at all costs. ok, fair enough.

but how many restrictions to civil liberty did the conservatives sign away in a flurry after 9/11?

what was the cost to the liberty of every single american after the patriot act? for the sake of, what, 3,000 people?

meanwhile 125,000 are dead and the conservatives are treating it like a rounding error in the glorious progress of the economic miracle.

Oh I realized we are in fact going to reopen schools in the fall. Trump said we must do it so schools will reopen consequences be damned.

New cases in the U.S. about 3,000 off from the the April peak. This is assuming the southern states aren't lying about their reported numbers. Good news is that deaths are way down.

Because it's all young people getting sick. If you look at the shaming photos, it's all idiots in their 20s out partying that are getting sick.

And the first person I talked to about it said he's not wearing a facemask he doesn't care if fired.

Seems to think he'll get unemployment if that happened.

We are getting better at treating COVID but there is also lag between infection and deaths. Something like 10 days between death and diagnosis.

Yea, and he's a trump fan though he says it's cause he's contrarian. Beginning to doubt that

It's better than older people getting sick. Not many people in their 20s are likely to get seriously ill. It's why the infection rate is climbing but the death rate is dropping. Be nice to just get it over with rather than being at a constant slow boil. The problem is these kids will infect their parents and grandparents.

too busy calling everyone 'cowards' to realize the very simple rationale of being pro-lockdown. i've got parents who are nearer to 60 than not. covid poses a serious risk once you get into late-middle-age and senility.
