the crowds in the UK are extremely diverse and mixed. it really isn't a case of bleeding heart liberals acting out on behalf of an absent or silenced black populace. they might be younger, sure, and trend towards lefty-liberals in their politics; there's plenty of students and young adults; but it's not a case of bored white people latching onto a handy excuse.
covid lockdown probably does explain why just so much energy and enthusiasm is being lashed on this now, of all times. i mean, something is clearly going on that hasn't happened with previous police killings and miscarriages of justice.
but there's definitely something else, something more interesting, i think, in the make-up of the crowds. a lot of younger white people from these generations are just more politically engaged, more socially conscientious, more activist, etc. you can't dismiss it altogether with cynicism.
