the crowds in the UK are extremely diverse and mixed. it really isn't a case of bleeding heart liberals acting out on behalf of an absent or silenced black populace. they might be younger, sure, and trend towards lefty-liberals in their politics; there's plenty of students and young adults; but it's not a case of bored white people latching onto a handy excuse.

covid lockdown probably does explain why just so much energy and enthusiasm is being lashed on this now, of all times. i mean, something is clearly going on that hasn't happened with previous police killings and miscarriages of justice.

but there's definitely something else, something more interesting, i think, in the make-up of the crowds. a lot of younger white people from these generations are just more politically engaged, more socially conscientious, more activist, etc. you can't dismiss it altogether with cynicism.

bristol at this point is basically the UKs 2nd or 3rd city. it is extremely popular with tourists, as well as european workers and international students.

yet again, as with most things on the UK, your view seems to be from the 1970s, with a lashing of new labour/blair-era talking points. it's almost like you haven't lived here for several decades.

the vast majority of people involved in pulling down the statue, committing 'criminal damage', were white.

it's pretty clear that a lot of relationships have to be reset, trust rebuilt from the ground up. there isn't really any feasible alternative. yes, if things continue on largely as they are, you can expect a lot of outcry for justice. that seems pretty healthy, to me, in a democracy.

How is it dilbert's take that police will be unable to arrest black people now? Just do it without death and excessive force. Stop escalating encounters with the public into violence. Stop training US cops how to beat on people and get away with it. Stop presenting as an oppressive paramilitary force. Stop being so adversarial in general. They've got a lot of work to do in patching up PR.

Also stop shooting and gassing peaceful protesters, bystanders, street medics, and clergy. That's just fighting a wildfire by throwing gasoline onto the flames.

i think it's actually a cause for pity when it's clear jay expects everyone else to have as much fear, selfishness and lack of fellow-feeling as himself. he can't seem to understand that the rest of the world perhaps aren't as fundamentally selfish as he is. for all his bluster about 'not being a nihilist' and 'actually standing for something', it seems his main animating principle is self-interest. which is an ideal of a sort, i guess.

Investigate and fire whoever authorized this stupid post. They obviously care more about politics than they care about policing. I noticed a lot of corporations are openly posting Black Lives Matter, making donations, saying they support black voices. It's like nothing I have ever seen before.

Black Lives Matter was an extremely controversial saying years ago. Kneeling during the anthem was also controversial but now it is just a normal showing of racial solidarity. And people will roll their eyes for me to credit Trump will propelling some of this but it has to be obvious that if conservative leadership wasn't so flaky, obnoxious, and incompetent, the national stance towards this would be different.

i logged onto call of duty to play a game this weekend, and the actual loading screen in-game, where before it was like some generic mission-splash screen, is now just a giant black screen saying 'black lives matter'.

A few game services went offline a little while for "a moment of silence for blah blah blah". It's funny that the services definitely slipped some server and database maintenance during that moment of silence. A lot of games are also pushing back their releases and announcements "in light of the recent blah. to give black voices blah". They are so using that extra time to catch up on work that COVID set them back on.
