my abiding memory of people wearing them is the way they looked after a term in a mild/rainy climate. people walking around in those things in the drizzle or rain. they did not look comfortable. soiled and sodden. and they probably smelled like an old family dog.

There's probably some irony in manly-men showing off their jumbo collection of leather footwear when women's shoe closets are the object of so much mockery and derision due to cost and quantity.

Boots with swappable liners are nice. Pack dry spares along with socks in case they get wet for whatever reason.

it's obviously really, really funny that jay felt the need to ride in on larssen's comments on my shoes to then spend 15 minutes sourcing images and making a gallery of his 'manly boot collection'. because it's totally not feminine at all to have and take pride in a huge collection of boots, and to want to show them off.

i guess you can't be accused of being a metrosexual if the boots are RUGGED and LEATHER!

The color of the first pair of boots is called Copper Rough and Tough

Rockports are incredibly comfortable and hard-wearing.
Best shoes I've ever had, as comfortable as trainers and actually lighter.

Please criticise my style choices, I don't care.

they look like the most nondescript shoes. what’s there to even criticise? if they’re made well and are comfortable then good for you.

of course, the thing with ‘fast-shun, dah-ling’, is what you actually wear them with. they wouldn’t look too great with thick argyle socks and khaki shorts.

those shoes are 100x more suitable for day to day wear and the vast majority of outfits than jay’s horrendous boot collection.

I double checked to make sure those aren't exactly the shoes I wear to work (they're not).

the waterproof boots are, without any exaggeration, some of the single-most offensive items of footwear i have ever seen. an apogee of cluelessness.

In the defense of water resistant or waterproof solutions they are usually better than marinating your feet in street slush. You can always swap to a normal pair of shoes out of a gym bag once you get to where you need to go and don't have to rough it through a bunch of disgusting wet.

Locally at least, probably no one is going to look twice if you hop out of your car in a pair of Caribous to refill your gas near one of the actually open passes in the Cascade Range winter.

the shoes i bought are water tight. it’s called a norwegian welt. you don’t have to look like a suburban inuit in order to preserve your feet. jesus christ. full-on festival wellingtons would look better than those fisher price shoes.

Right, I have water tight shoes as well. But I still keep the caribous because in addition to the good slush/snow functionality, they have the swappable liner. You can do cool things like wash or replace them. Very warm and comfy looking like a suburban Inuit sometimes.

I can't imagine why a boot (let alone a collection of) would be clung to as a statement of masculinity though. You'd figure a true John Wayne type would blush at the very notion.

I really don't miss working in the trades or outdoors at all. I cherish the fact that I don't need to invest in a pair of waterproof blah blah blah since I am only outside long enough to park my car before scurrying inside the building like a rat.

people who dress in outdoorswear and heavy-duty workwear when they live pampered white-collar suburban office lives seem to me to be having more of a 'masculinity crisis' than any urban metrosexual who likes fancy ties and well-trimmed nails.

Those boots are alright but I wouldn't buy them in suburban nyc. more midwest type of wear and 'i spend a lot of time outdoors' stuff.

I don't know about the rest of the world but "masculinity" in America is a marketing term or commodity more than anything else. A lot of men think that the products they buy makes them more manly: whiskey, bacon, guns etc.

A lot of men who buy into this are probably secret gays. I don't give a damn about impressing other men. I rather talk latte art with a hipster girl than grill bacon with the boys.

I rather listen to a girl's coming of age story brainstorming than go camping with the guys

My grandfather was an athlete and a World War 2 veteran who appreciated things like ties and well-trimmed nails. I think I'll take his word over the advice of slovenly internet cowboys or masculinity advice from quora and howto.

I judge people on having untrimmed nails. It's pure laziness to have long fingernails as a guy.

Keeping a beard in good condition is one of the fussiest acts of grooming available to men.
