I've been wanting one for a few months now, wondered what people's experience with 3d printing is.

Most of the stuff I'd want I'd have to make the model for so I need to get back into that too. Basic models.

I don't really understand the desire for 3D printing. If it's just a hobby, I'd rather turn something on a lathe, personally.

The point is 3d printing gives you parts impossible to make by conventional methods.

3D Modelling is a moderately useful skill to have, all my actual parts I've had made by third parties.
The $1,000 3d printers are poor for most purposes, and can't use great materials, except for the novelty and learning.
I'd rather have parts from a $100,000 machine in a useful material from a bureau service most of the time.
