too used to the rarefied air of HVAC, jay? where the hegel discussions are more dialectical, the stats modelling more complex, the coronavirus commentary more incisive? i’m sure your air con peers are the veritable intelligentsia.
Indeed. Engineers are of at least above average intelligence or they wouldn't be able to finish the program.
Engineers are often socially incompetent and have views that are extremely noxious even by me standards.

Teachers are usually the crappy students of college but are the most sociable. When you are a teacher, every day is a performance.

That is why teachers get an appreciation week and engineers do not.

Very true. Most engineers are social misfits. Some of them can never ever ever be put in front of clients. Some teachers should never ever ever be allowed to teach children.

jay loves it when he gets to talk like he's one of the 'engineers', as if he has an electrical engineering degree from berkeley or something.

it's merely obsequious. it would be like someone with a law degree from a community college making out they rub shoulders in discussions with lawyers at cravath, swaine and moore.

You would be surprised then. I am very sociable and friendly in the real world. Bf2s is where I post how I really feel because you are all my captive audience.

you work in air con. you plug figures into pre-existing formulae. you tick boxes on checklists.

how much actual analytical work or 'creative' engineering do you do? how much do you use college-level math and engineering principles? i would wager 5% of your role, and even then with guidance or oversight.

dilbert sees through you. i trust dilbert's judgment.

dilbert is a crank, but he has a top-rate education from one of the best engineering schools in the world. jay was given a degree by a mildewed naval college on the east river. i trust that dilbert has a better notion of what an engineer is.

jay was that guy who was skipping with joy after getting his accreditation. 'whoopee! i've made it into the cadre of engineers! from now on i'm as good as the next guy! i get to tell everyone i'm an engineer! no questions asked!' more wishful thinking and self-delusion from this forum's Man of Reason.

Actual analytical work? I mean, first off, you have to understand that mechanical engineers are broken out into several sub-disciplines. He specializes in machine design. What they do is closer to material science. My design work is the application of thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics. Out in the real world, there is software available for much of the work. I don't sit at my desk calculating the heat transfer coefficient for a built-up wall by hand. It would be a wildly inefficient use of my time to do so. Could I? Absolutely. I had to do just that in order to attain my professional engineer license. There were a few questions like that on the exam.

He got bent out of shape because I called the beam that supports the cantilevered section of my deck by the shorthand "cantilever beam", so I'd really take his criticism of me with a heavy grain of salt. He's... quirky.

Yes, because it is illegal to call yourself an engineer unless you possess a professional engineering license...

i would just love to see an actual engineer's face when jay starts chuckling and making all those confraternal in-jokes which are specific to every profession. those remarks and forms of socialisation that one casually drops, or the self-perpetuating myths of any profession at whose font every worker draws a small measure of pride. like how lawyers and bankers are forever hyping to one another how much they work, and the insanely long hours they pull. these rites of passage.

imagine jay doing that around a real engineer. 'oh yeah, we work so hard! we made it through the program!' with a jocular and somewhat over-heavy elbow to his interlocutor's side. seeking a confirmation that never quite comes.

'by the way, have you heard that coronavirus is basically flu?'

'i mean, america has 330,000,000 people. if you think of how many dead as a % of the total ...'

It's a gigantic red flag to me when people start endlessly complaining about how much they work in a day. Learn time management, pick a job you do like or fuck off.

Anyway, we got a variance, and my job is reopening on Monday. Now that I don't have to worry about losing my job due to a long term shutdown, I can look back fondly on quarantine as an extended paid vacation. The downside is that I now have to try to finish this deck by Sunday...

Same. I'm not impressed by the people that take 14 hours to complete what should be 8 hours of work. Workaholics all want a medal.

weren't you just accusing everyone of being a soft, self-centered liberal idiot when they only thought of quarantine in terms of their own costs?

most of the country are still suffering! livelihoods ruined! militias in the streets! you should be outraged. i thought it was a huge insult to the average american intelligence?

Yeah, but I'm not sure if we'll be going back to every-other-day or what. I told my boss I need to ease back in because my kids' school doesn't reopen until June 1st and my wife can't watch the kids by herself and work at the same time.

Some of those militia guys need to off some people in public soon. It has been the only interesting storyline in the last half a dozen episodes and I am afraid it won't pay off like the rest of the season.
