So what does everybody think of it so far?

Personally I'm looking forward to the gaming specific features the most, especially cross-play with XBox One players, I know way more people with an XBox than a gaming PC.  Having recording baked into the OS is also really cool as well even if there are some better options already like nVidia's ShadowPlay

It's been my main OS for a few months now. Even with the bugs in the Tech Preview, I still love it.

I'm half considering that myself now, I already have it running on my little Lenovo X61 Tablet just to try out the pen input and watch the whole thing evolve.  Plus I've heard that you'll actually be able to update the Tech Preview all the way into the release build.

yes you can. Though I would (as I am personally) suggest new builds on both the consumer preview and the final release.

I should mention that I don't have any touch devices so I have no idea how those work with Win10.

Side note of no relevance: I found out the other day you can upgrade from Win1 to Win8.1 (and presumably 10)

that's kinda nuts

it looks like windows 10 is going to be to windows 8 what 7 was to vista - that is it's gonna make it not suck as horribly.

i've tried running the preview, it's, basically, 8 with startisback installed and an assortment of dubious bells and whistles attached. it's okay, but nothing to write home about.

Looks like it can install automatically through Windows update when it's released:

DirectX 12 might possibly allow you to pool together the resources of multiple brands of video cards, meaning a crossfire/SLI hybrid of AMD and nVidia or even those laptops that have an AMD or nVidia GPU for gaming and the onboard Intel chip used for desktop computing:

how the hell are they gonna make the bridge across two cards like that?

Who knows, but since they're redesigning everything so thoroughly, I'd guess that anything is possible unless they get sued or it gets specifically blocked through driver updates.

Found another article about it that goes a little more in-depth.  It says pretty much the same thing though, definitely possible and might actually be happening according to devs but it can potentially be fought with drivers from any company that doesn't want to play ball, namely nVidia.  We'll see how it goes I guess.

Personally I never run more than one card but it's cool to have the potential there if needed and I'm sure laptop gamers will appreciate being able to pair their rinky dink integrated Intel GPU with their dedicated mobile gaming GPU for a small boost in performance.

I just replaced my video card and was going to sell my old 1G. I guess I should onto it for a while. I wonder if "cheaper" cards will go up in price (or at least stop dropping) if that ability comes out.

virtualizing just about everything has been ms's motto lately, that's prolly the way they are going to implement this^ as well.

Looks like AMD & nVidia may not be able to fight multi-adapter compatibility between brands after all, it already works in DirectX 12 in Ashes of the Singularity:

They'll make a fight of it. There's the gsync vs freesync niche market for anti-tearing monitors. Also, peripherals.

Only just upgraded mine as the free upgrade offer ends at the end of this month, so upgrade now if you haven't already.

So far seems good, turned off all tracking and targeting adverts stuff and running an offline account.
Anything else I should be doing, or any other little tricks I should be using, to get the most out of it etc.

The OS has been relatively smooth for me so far. There's still enough session-ending bugs to iron out of this "free beta test" that I don't feel quite comfortable with putting it on function-critical office PC's yet. Windows 7 still stability king for me.

Windows 10 is the most cucked operating system of all time. On two different boards I have been unable to dual boot Win 10 without the Win 10 install becoming irreparably corrupted.

I find the lack of driver support for older hardware (not completely Microsoft's fault) to be the most irritating factor of Windows 10, but it was also an irritating factor of Windows 7 on even older PCs. I don't want to buy a new computer every five years, but I feel like I'm getting forced into it for sheer convenience. Kind of a first world problem, though. If I didn't PC game or run media productivity, I'd be fine on a $200 laptop.

I just wish I could play Rome Total War (2004) smoothly. What a masterpiece.

Played Rome 2 when it came out. Wished I had more freedom to build what I want in cities. How many km between one city and the next? "I'm sorry, you're at your limit. You'll have to choose between building a barracks and building an aqueduct." wtf

With stuff like the AoE and C&C remasters, maybe we'll get some of the older Total Wars updated rather than just the DLC-laden sequels. I won't hold my breath though.

I am considering ordering a Win XP CD from eBay and installing it in one of my old PCs just so I can play Rome Total War.
