Partial measures, toothless, too late, and undermined from the beginning by the country's leadership and its ongoing behavior.

The problem with the protest in the US is that it's just a prelude. In other countries there's nothing comparable but statistics do show people are out and about more. Traffic on highways has increased between 5-10% in the last month and people are more willing to spend days in nature as well. Not bad per se, but it's an indicator that it will be very challenging to maintain current policy measures for prolonged periods of time. More people will join protests or start ignoring rules the longer it takes.
Even with the partial lockdown the US curve isn't truly flattening.

Are these morons going to accept a proper lockdown at this - much too late - point?

Russia looks like a complete disaster, still exponential.
You need to look at the log scale and daily increments. For the US it's still far too early to tell though they seem to stabilise, but other countries have regained some control and/or see a slow decrease in case build.

The open source models are also not exhaustive. Policy is strongly affected by daily ICU admission rates etc.

so, who knew? turns out 'herd immunity' is a complete pipe dream and a blind faith. just as people have been warning for weeks, there is no evidence for it as yet and we are making huge assumptions based on our experiences with totally different diseases.

https://www.theguardian.com/society/202 … t-symptoms

i guess jay won't pay this much mind because the WHO are a bunch of crooks, paid off by the chinese, bla bla bla.

Only a tiny proportion of the global population – maybe as few as 2% or 3% – appear to have antibodies in the blood showing they have been infected with Covid-19, according to the World Health Organization, a finding that bodes ill for hopes that herd immunity will ease the exit from lockdown.

“Easing restrictions is not the end of the epidemic in any country,” said WHO director-general Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus at a media briefing in Geneva on Monday. “So-called lockdowns can help to take the heat out of a country’s epidemic.”

But serological testing to find out how large a proportion of the population have had the infection and developed antibodies to it – which it is hoped will mean they have some level of immunity – suggests that the numbers are low.

“Early data suggests that a relatively small percentage of the populations may have been infected,” Tedros said. “Not more than 2%-3%.”
jay: i bet most americans have had it by now! 70% will be immune in no time and we can all get back to work!

My mom is having trouble breathing the last two days. She is in a high risk group. I am looking into getting her a COVID test. It's annoying how limited my options are. CDC says do not call 911. I called my state hotline, the machine said to use the CDC COVID self help tool. The CDC tool said to call 911.

There is a testing site in my hometown. You need a doctor's referral to get tested though. So I now have to wait half an hour for her private healthcare provider's office to open so I can get a referral from them. After that she would have to drive to the testing site, get tested, and wait for results. She could drive herself to the site but she is sick and that is not a good idea so I have to drive her. Which means I will be stuck in an enclosed space with her. Other countries have testers that will make home calls right? I think I heard about that.

In the meantime what can I do? Tell her to relax and sleep. She has a Nebulizer at least which can help. I don't want to call 911 since a visit by an ambulance and hospital trip are the best ways to get COVID if you don't have it. So we just wait.

Thank you for your kind words.

Can you please explain what she means by being Nazi Germany? Does she think that Clinton would have initiated the Final Solution to the Jewish question? Does she mean she would have started World War 3 on Russia? So many questions.

Hope it's not covid-19 and that she feels better soon, mac. Both of my parents could stand not catching it also, and I hope they can avoid it. I don't feel like burying any close relatives regardless of Jay's venomous posts.

Also not surprising that people are saying the US is becoming Nazi Germany, like they always do. Sad that they credit an authoritarian bully with "preventing" it.

hope your mum feels better soon. just a heads up that nebulisers are terrible for spreading viruses. if she is admitted to a hospital they will likely not let her use one. at least that's the policy in the NHS over here.

After a certain age it becomes very noticeable that a lot of people suffer cognitive degradation. Reasoning skills, vocabulary - it all goes down the drain. I'm pleasantly surprised whenever I meet someone 70+ who's still quick witted and eloquent. But even for those exceptions it's likely true that they used to be smarter still between their 20s and 60s.

I hope that they're able to find a cure of sorts in the future but for now it does seem to me that brain mass and function suffer the same fate as the rest of the body the older it gets.

lol christ you're merciless. retired-age people's horizons narrow. they become much less social, encounter hardly any new people, let alone from different generations or political stripes. they settle into a life routine and with it its mental habits. it's a bit much to say his mother has suffered 'cognitive degradation'. the vast majority of people unquestioningly get their news from one source, and that is acquired out of sheer unthinking habit (if not even parental example, long ago).

the real 'degradation' is in the quality of news and communication in america. all of their news sources now are so wildly divisive and partisan that the majority of the population are subject to the whims of extremely politicized mouthpieces. fox news went all-out for corona denialism in the early days, remember. these are not news organizations with any sort of civic or social responsibility. they put 'dr's' on their channel who are hacks or quacks and promote fake, and in some instances genuinely harmful, 'medical advice'. middle america is the captive audience for this shit. can you blame a 70+ something for not wanting to seek out alternative media online?

you have to bear in mind: these people came of age as a generation when television and the news were very different. the box in the corner of the living room was their link to the (much wider) outside world, and they tended to believe their news anchors, chat show hosts, and even politicians. the corporate media in america has changed drastically since the 90s, and increasingly and bizarrely so the GFC/trump-era. old people receive the news as if it's still credible.

Eh, I did go off on a bit of a tangent but it just reminded me how people slow with age. I noticed it in my own parents the older they became and in their peers. Not that there was anything outright wrong with them, but their speech patterns changed over time and their mental acuity and ability to concentrate definitely lessened. Their political views also became more extreme. I mean let's take Joe Biden and Trump as examples as well - if you look for and find videos of them in their 40s it's as if you're watching different people.

Granted there's certain generational differences but the (more intelligent) older generation passed through the same educational institutes with the same academic rigour. You'd expect them to be more critical of their sources and surroundings.

i think it's probably the case that people turn to the right as they become older without necessarily it implying dementia. i mean, i'm no conservative, but the equivalence makes me a little uneasy

Trump is going to order everyone back to work in a few days. Craziest thing about that is that it really doesn't have to be this way. We are the wealthiest country in the world and can essentially just print money because there is no where else stable for rich people to park assets. Pass a small UBI, pay the farmers throwing away the food to process and transport it to food banks, and increase aid to hospitals. So much easier than arguing with governors about reopening their states or explaining why the amount of sick people is increasing after the lockdown ended.

I think one of the major lessons for the future will be in risk management in the private sector, particularly for multinationals. We've become accustomed to the idea that cash flow and liquidity is maximally invested for future profit potential and/or bonuses, but it seems to have become the norm for even very large corporations to only have resilience for 1 or 2 months of negative income, having to immediately slash thousands of workers and sell off lots of assets to preserve themselves for longer periods.

This model is now being exposed as incredibly fragile. I know that a pandemic like this is once in a century, but there's many other potentially destabilising events that could also seriously pressure private enterprises. States are now required to invest massive sums to keep afloat megacorporations. Much less support is left for SME's, hourly workers and the self employed, while those groups are actually most at risk. It can't be explained that those who profited most from our system are not expected to prepare for worst case scenario's.

nurses in america are 'counter'-protesting the protestors. they have inadequate PPE and are working in hellish conditions.

nurse reads out a list of those who have died in the frontlines.
https://twitter.com/JoshuaPotash/status … 6718298112

isn't it weird that jay expects for society to fund, gift and grant his way through life because he 'served' in the military, but then he thinks that healthcare workers are a self-interested cabal, only out for their own benefits? healthcare workers are dying in their droves in america, highly qualified, highly educated people whose aim in life is to heal and protect life (as opposed to er, taking it, hoorah). jay can't stand these people. how very, very odd.

'thank you for your service' would be entirely appropriate here. i don't know what a bunch of deadbeat high-school dropouts killing iraqis have to be thanked for, to be honest.

protestor tells nurse to 'go to china'.
https://twitter.com/MarcZenn/status/1251975162926227457

'liberate america' protestors confront AZ nurses.
https://twitter.com/JoshuaPotash/status … 8746966017

you've got to laugh. these would be the first people to start saluting a goose-stepping military or national guard.

meanwhile here's what countries that haven't lost their fucking minds do in a pandemic. they stay inside and they applaud those who are often risking their lives and the lives of their loved ones to confront this emergency.

imagine open-carrying a gun in camo pants to go and confront a female nurse, during a pandemic.

america you have lost your fucking minds. do you really think the rest of the world can regard you with anything but pity?

Its not good to put anyone on a pedestal, not in a uniquely strange culture like the US where everyone is desperate to get on the pedestal and kick the ladder away behind them.
There's a very large subset of medical professionals who are greedy and ruthless, probably doesn't apply to your average hospital worker but does among consultants and surgeons. Probably half the medical people I've dealt with over the years have been arseholes, recommending wrong and out of date treatments, pushing multiple separate procedures to maximise their take. A doctor who wants to prolong cancer so he can make more money shouldn't be a doctor.

People are fucking nuts though, the community isn't going to forget these anti-social militia nuts for a while, not when 80% of people don't wan't the lockdowns lifted too early.

Christian Yingling, a former commanding officer of the Pennsylvania Light Foot militia, called the protest he attended in Harrisburg "an acceptable risk".

"I'm gonna do what I got to do to feed my family," he said. "If it means I got to risk my health then so be it… and yes even potentially the health of others.

"My mortgage payments are late, my truck payment is late and if I lose either of those I'm dead in the water."

"When you're quarantining healthy people, that's tyranny"
I'd take to the streets with a gun if I thought it would get me a haircut though.

Here most govt spending has been directed to employees, if you can't run a business with free labour your business probably deserves to fail.

Virgin Australia is being allowed to fail by the govt, they could barely service their $5bn debt before this, and there's no reason the Aus govt should be subsidising Etihad or the Chinese Communist party.
I'm guessing their 'investors' pulled the usual trick, acquire a business, load it with the maximum sustainable debt, pocket the proceeds and expect the govt to bail them out if it went wrong.

Even if they're not going to be solved by standing in front of the state capital with assault weapons or blockading your local hospital, there are valid concerns here in regard to food, shelter, and equipment.

There are unavoidable economic consequences that need to be addressed somehow while people are getting hammered by pandemic profiteers, corporations-first bailouts, and other boondoggle occurring behind the haze of the coronavirus that I can scarcely begin to summarize.
