It explains his obsession with getting out and living in a city then. I grew up in and around NYC. After a while the romantic and exciting feelings wear off and you realize that you go to the museums and Broadway shows less often than the tourists do. If you're not a night owl, the 24/7 aspect is more annoying than great.

I couldn't imagine raising my kids in a city apartment. No thanks.

NYC nightlife is fun if you like drinking the same overpriced alcohol in different places every night. I HATE traveling to Hoboken, Downtown Jersey City, and NYC to drink. I have a tavern on my corner. If I am going to go drink, which I don't even like, it will be down the street.

I just go to friends houses. I always hated going into overcrowded bars, fighting to get to the bar to order a drink, not being able to hear myself. I used to spend most of the night outside smoking just so I could have a conversation. The only downside to that strategy is that you end up hooking up with only smokers.

I used to smoke from 14 to 20. Approaching a girl smoking is a lot easier than inside a bar anyway. Christ almighty that brings back some memories.

Jesus christ man you keep throwing in the wind any statistic about urbanisation and reduce it to 'obsessions' and 'feelings'. Humanity isn't moving to cities just because, how often do I need to repeat that point?

Interesting fact: suburban poverty in America is growing while urban poverty has been in decline.

jay never acquired analytical skills. military just tells you how to follow orders and military college how to plug things into equations.

like all americans who are reared like cattle in this way, they all come out branded with the 'rugged individualist' stamp. the penny never drops for them.

I don't think the colleges are going to okay in this recession. They are too expensive, people are too broke, and COVID fucks up their whole business model.

the UK universities were weaned off public funding with a wave of privatization and neoliberal reforms in the early 2010s.

at the same time they had their student numbers uncapped and were allowed to charge 3x the fees. international students had to pay more yet again.

no surprises, but the UK university sector proceeded to double or triple their student numbers and market aggressively to ... foreign students. a lot of property speculation, too. turns out rich foreign students who can pay £25,000 a year rather than £9,000 can also pay for, and indeed like, very expensive luxury student accommodation. gyms. fancy high-tech libraries. you name it, the universities have borrowed and expanded to build it.

a lot of them are going to be asking for bail-outs from the same conservative government that thought it was infinitely wise to shift them off the public ledger 10 years ago.

certain parts of contemporary conservative thought are like mental enfeeblement.

Foreigners won't threaten former lovers with knives so they have that going for them. The average Englishman has no chance.

Why do you NEED to move to a big popular city?

I've visited friends who are from rural areas. I get that it's boring when the major entertainment is shit like cruising up and down main street and drinking and fighting. I also understand the urge to not be a townie. But you know what? Every kid from Iowa that ends up living in Brooklyn for a few years ends up moving back out again. A lot of them end up going home. They came here because they were convinced that where they came from was boring and lowbrow. Only idiots stay behind, yes?

Honestly, it all comes down to snobbery. The young people who flee to the cities convinced themselves that they're smarter, more urbane, and better educated than the people they left behind. It shows in their politics, and it shows in their attitudes when they return home to visit their parents. Is it true? No, not really. They're still the same people, they've just traded the carhartt uniform for warby darby's.

hahaha of course. Those same young people that you push to get a good education, make themselves recession-proof, are *checks notes* too snobby to take that high-paying engineering or tech job in Gary, Indiana. You can tell because there are thousands of unfilled, high-paying professional jobs in those areas.

It's not employment that is resulting in professionals moving to cities, it's the rural snobbery!

I'm concerned with your inability to reconcile your own worldview. You push a narrative that all it takes is some gumption and work ethic to improve one's lot in life, and people should be motivated to do that, but then chide them for moving to places where they can find good jobs because they are snobs?

I think it's best to just stop interjecting your feelings in to these things. We live in a world of big data. We can suss out trends and indicators out of this data.

I'm not going to insult someone or hold it against them for wanting to move from Flyover, North Dakota to Chicago.
