I expect most companies with international footprints will keep and expand existing screening policies and/or adopt new measures to limit future exposure. Something 10x as deadly as the flu will be a major factor in how companies do international business. Mandatory coronavirus vaccines for international travel will be implemented by some governments and businesses with varying levels of enforcement.

Oh, I dunno, maybe because the efficacy of vaccines has been empirically shown over the course of a century and a half... vs a group of academics playing with flawed projection systems... hmm...

I don't disagree with synthesizing technical messages in order to create policy. The problem is that there was no coherent policy being created, so the default position is to go to the experts.

It's a bit misaligned to say the problem is that the scientists are speaking directly to the people when the person responsible for processing that information is utterly incoherent and incapable of doing much beyond dementia method acting.

Agreed, but assuming that experts can actually create reasonable policy is too much of a stretch. Theory, when applied to people, usually doesn't work. There are just too many variables.

It would have made such a big difference if the federal government just turned on the money printer and bought all of the supplies to give away. Then just keep depositing stimulus money in every taxpayers account each month. Such low effort and cost response that would have bought a lot of good will for the adminstration. I haven't a clue why they just don't do that.

Instead they are worried about disincentizing work and making sure the "right people" get the money. That's pure ideology put into practice.

also data science and machine learning is at such a point that it's actually quite easy to predict human behaviour, taken en masse. considering humans as simple vectors of disease with variables like population density, humidity, ingress/egress of disease, etc. is very easy to model. i don't know why you have this semi-mystical notion that a human being is some inscrutable actor, as if every single person in NYC is on the verge of picking up a gun, shooting an arab on a sun-struck beach, and then writing a novella about it. epidemiologists have been developing computer models for the movement of human populations and the spread of disease for the entire history of the discipline.

we have already discussed ad nauseam how epidemiologists are able to derive an 'r0-value' for pathogens, essentially estimating how many people will contract a contagious disease from each person.

have you even heard of random forest classifiers? particle swarm optimization algorithms?

did you know that human crowds adopt fluid mechanics behaviour? impossible to guess where people will walk!!! there is just no way that city planners can design these things!

'experts can't use theory to predict human behaviour', says jay, posting from a phone on which every single app has been designed with some aspect of behavioural theory or data science in mind. says jay, who gleans his news from blogsites and facebook feeds that predictively siphon and sift and arrange stories according to the likelihood of him clicking. it's impossible!
