Engineering and manufacturing have been beaten down over the last 10-20 years, people have woken up to what China has been up to and how stupid the west has been about it and with luck it will rebound.

I did leave a while back, I'm doing contract work at present - fewer hours for more money.
One of my former managers let me back in to clean out some of the surplus equipment, which was nice of him.
I now have an industrial laser and enough parts to make 3-4 heavy duty robots in my shed.

I fully expect to end my days as a J F Sebastian character, almost certainly crushed to death between the mechanical thighs of a cyborg sex-bot.
