Still way more competent than the person the White House. I can honestly accept a little bit of corruption if the country is doing fine overall.

If the superintendent of my district decided to buy a Lexus with the money saved from the shutdown I wouldn't mind. He has been wonderful to the staff compared to our earlier ones.

yes, i didn't list those things with unfailing admiration. i did say in the same post that it's a bit crusty and a bit naff, after all. the local white-dreadlocks crowd are either irritating or something to be laughed about; but that is what contributes to its 'west coast vibe', which you derisively dismissed. but it's a good city and not at all the sooty post-industrial wasteland you're imagining from the tail-end of the concrete bloc 1970s. at least i actually fucking know what i'm talking about.

i'm sure it's very very interesting living in a humid suburb full of bungalows with your parents and the semi-retired.

Adelaide has very low humidity, one of the best things about the place, haven't had a battery corrode and burst in 15 years.

in fact, you can do away with meteorology all together -- you can have that one -- i'd rather live on a harbourside apartment in a hip city than with my parents in a bungalow, period.

to be honest i had no recollection you lived in adelaide. i can only recall it wasn't melbourne based on your comments here in the past.

Erm, I dunno, I live here so not sure what its like to visit.

Off the top of my head...

Start in Sydney, travel up the east coast, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Barrier Reef, drive or train.
Fly to Darwin, do the outback stuff up there.
Then Alice Springs/Uluru
Mebourne for culture etc
Then Perth if you can be bothered.

Apart from the east coast driving is pointless and dangerous, especially off-road, better off flying, on the train or by coach, but if you're in a group or tour then maybe it might be worth it.

I'm sure there are plenty of lonely planet etc guides which will give you a much better plan.

I visited Aussieland one time. I say go to the Gold Coast and Sydney for sure. Add in Melbourne because it's a good scene. Skip everywhere else.

Gold Coast (esp. Surfer's Paradise) is as close to where I grew up as you can get. Very much a 'surfs up' culture, and people's internal clocks and motors are dialed back accordingly. Sydney has some good culture, surprisingly. Melbourne is pretty hip. Consider if Dilbert were a city, Melbourne would be his opposite.

Don't go to the Great Barrier Reef. Look at it remotely like a good lad.

Uluru is a big rock that you go visit to say that you went there. It's like going to kiss the Blarney Stone (which i"ve actually done and it was fucking stupid).

I enjoyed the trip to Uluru, Kings Canyon and Kata Tjuta, don't go if you can't hike or need constant flashing lights to keep your attention.

I did Wilpena Pound also which I enjoyed, its 'local' to me and may not be worth travelling here just for that.

Also did a rainforest tour out of the gold coast, also not really worth it unless a three hour drive on wobbly roads to see some damp trees is your thing.

Maybe Perth is a good place to get over jet-lag, otherwise not sure why anyone would go there.

The whole northern part of the country is insect-ridden so I've given it a miss.
