friendly reminder that fox news and the propaganda core behind trump's messaging will be responsible for 10,000s of american deaths. downplaying the severity of a pandemic during the early stages of an outbreak, not so fucking smart people. far worse than encouraging the vulnerable and frightened to swallow tropical fish feed.

I wonder what the US political landscape will look like a month from now. The virus spread is still accelerating, by that time it is likely well over a million will be infected and deaths will reach several thousands a day.

Will be interesting to see how long Trump's supportive media can ignore this administration's negligence.

exactly. right now to even talk about red states and blue states is stupid. this virus went global in under a month. do they really imagine it won’t affect arkansas?

Maybe Americans too terrified of medical bills to go see a doctor will help flatten the curve. Greatest country in the whole wide world.

I'd really like to know what it will take for Americans to realise their President is a senile moron.

I don't see it happening any time ever, I guess we now have a cohort who grew up watching Fox News believing its a news channel.

Also I'd love to know how they can say the peak will be done in 7-14 days, the data doesn't seem to look that way.

There's actually a bigger problem than the pandemic - what comes after the pandemic.

Is China just going to sit back and take it if ~30-50% of their manufacturing business is taken back to where it came from?
I don't believe the CCP could survive the consequential unrest, they'll start a war as a distraction.

And what happens when China stops buying US debt? The economy won't survive that and they'll start a war as a distraction.

Can Putin survive if there's a mass outbreak in Russia?

So basically the whole house of cards falls and we're all fucked.

'After the pandemic' may take up to 2 years. As the situation at present is still quite chaotic, the timespan is too long to make any such predictions.

I believe it is unlikely current business practices will fundamentally change and that production will now suddenly return to the west. Far too expensive an undertaking that can only succeed with enormous import tariffs to ensure competitiveness of domestic production in the market. We don't like our dependency on China, but we sure do like cheap produce and no trade wars.

Dr. Pinksy is a mixed bag. "Addiction medicine specialist" throwing the weight of his media personality into telling people they're more likely to die of an asteroid impact than a deadly disease. Hard to believe the man was advocating for safe sex in the 90s.

Most of the youtube doctors I watch have stressed caution about this coronavirus since the beginning. Do they get their information from entirely different sources, or is it just Pinksy talking out his rear end. I wonder.

When 30-year-old Ben Luderer started to feel sick, he wasn't that surprised. Just a few days earlier, his wife, Brandy, had tested positive for coronavirus, but there wasn't much to it.

All she had was a really low-grade temperature, one that the doctors didn't even really consider to be a fever, she said. She had some congestion, but she was on the mend. He wasn't all that worried, either, when he started feeling unwell. After all, they were both young and healthy.
The two worked in the Cliffside Park School District in New Jersey, both as special education teachers -- she at School #4, he at School #6. A star baseball player in high school, he continued his passion by coaching the varsity baseball team.

A Hoarder’s Huge Stockpile of Masks and Gloves Will Now Go to Doctors and Nurses, F.B.I. Says
The stockpile, slated for medical personnel in New York and New Jersey, includes 192,000 N95 respirators, 130,000 surgical masks and nearly 600,000 medical-grade gloves, the authorities said.

Nearly a million medical-grade masks and gloves that were seized this week from a Brooklyn man who was charged with lying to federal agents about price-gouging will go to medical workers in New York and New Jersey, the authorities said Thursday.

The need for masks and personal protective equipment, known as PPE, is acute in the New York metropolitan region, an epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic in the United States.

The stockpile of supplies that were seized included 192,000 N95 respirators, 130,000 surgical masks and nearly 600,000 medical grade gloves, the authorities said. They said they also had recovered surgical gowns, disinfectant towels, particulate filters, hand sanitizer and spray disinfectant.

The man who was charged with lying to federal agents, Baruch Feldheim, 43, charged a doctor $12,000 last month for a large order of masks, gowns and hazmat gear at a 700 percent markup, according to the F.B.I. The agency called it a glaring example of hoarding of medical supplies that are designated as essential under a presidential executive order.

So 15000 dead in Italy in 3 weeks, vast majority in Lombardy.

They should've ended the quarantine and let people out in the streets to work because the economy right.

What a dumbfuck you have to be to argue that position when there's real life examples like this to look at.

So all the news on the corona crisis in the US incl. Trump are pushing the notion that this week will be the worst week. I don't know how they got to that conclusion.

On average, going from first symptoms to death takes 18 days. 18 days ago the US had 9000 confirmed cases. 11 days ago it was 100k. Less than a third of today's total cases were determined between 11-18 days ago.

The worst week isn't going to be this week. It's this week, the week after and the week following that one. April is going to be 'the worst month' before a noticeable decline in confirmed cases, ICU admissions and deaths. The same has been true in Italy and Spain: it's a month of hell (at least), not a week.

Trump is pushing a political narrative completely disconnected from the reality of the crisis he's facing. That's going to be fun next week, but I'm sure everyone will just pretend like they never said anything.

So, the models all appear to have wildly overshot high. New York is now canceling expansion of temporary hospitals because we've already peaked.

which models? can you link? none that i'm reading.

trump is still ordering a bunch of untested and near-useless malaria medicine.

i'm pretty confident that, like literally every single matter of fact about this issue, you are going to be wrong yet again.

how have you 'peaked' when you've done almost nothing to control the disease? lots of countries have had 1 or 2 day 'dips' in infection rates, fwiw.

NY Gov. Andrew Cuomo dedicated much of his Monday coronavirus briefing to outlining some potential good news when it comes to the Empire State's efforts to flatten the curve.

New hospitalizations are going down, discharges are going up, and New York's death toll — already at 4,758 — is actually performing below the models officials have been consulting.

However, Cuomo noted that the social distancing measures contributing to the recent slowdown must remain in place to protect New Yorkers, extending the state's stay-at-home order to April 29.

Once again, Cuomo lambasted New Yorkers for disobeying social distancing measures, displaying photos of crowded New York City parks over the weekend.

"What right do you have to act irresponsibly in a way that could get you sick, or someone else sick, and then I have to send an ambulance to pick you up and send you to an emergency room that is already overburdened and doesn't have staff, doesn't have supplies, doesn't have ventilators, because you were reckless?" Cuomo said.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo made sure to deliver some good news on Monday with a healthy dose of caution.

New hospitalizations and ICU admissions are going down, while for a second day in a row, new deaths are declining.

"While none of this is good news, the possible flattering of the curve is better than the increases that we have seen," Cuomo said.

And a temporary hospital my company was starting construction on was canceled.

The models the US government are using estimate 200,000 dead from this. Imperial estimated what? 2.2 million?
