different cables do have different impedences, and a balanced cable is different from an unbalanced cable. it's not particularly difficult.
not to mention that DACs will have different internal routing for their balanced and unbalanced outputs.
that's for 50 Ohms -- my headphones are 300 Ohms, so the difference is even more noticeable.
good luck getting a balanced XLR cable for 25 cents. you can't even get an amazon own brand basic cable for that. even a decent quality, durable metal connector will set you back $5 (!!!)
why does it bother you what people spend their money on anyway? everyone who is into audio hardware knows that there are diminishing returns. same as people who spend $3,000+ on a gaming PC for 15% extra FPS over the mid-range enthusiast build. do you harangue them too? again, as i said in my first post, if you spend $1,000 on pre-amplification, which involves spending $400 for -4/5dB of better noise floor, then an unbalanced cable can quickly become the weakest part in your signal chain.
of course it's all much of a muchness if you listen to music all day at work on your airpods. you've never spent silly money on target pistol accessories, i take it?
